Ref: Alan Holt records - This property has had a number of different names throughout its history. William Cook, a farmer, bought the land it stands on in 1876. In 1882 he was rated for a house (not the current one) on 11 acres. The present house was built in 1885 by John Clark, an auctioneer. In 1888 the Tower Hill estate and the home (Tower Hill Lodge) were auctioned, but the house was not sold. In 1889 the house was purchased by Captain Shepherd. Records show that in 1894 the owners were Mr Thomas and Mrs Hortenzia Howell. They named the house 'Corcovado'. Later they added a study with a corner designed to provide views from the Dandenong Ranges around to Mt Macedon. After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. Surrey Hills Mounted Police Station was located at 5 Suffolk Road (dem.) from 1889-1914. It was a police residence with two rooms as the police office and workshop. There were stables on the back fence. The property adjoined Wyclif Church in Norfolk Road. Gilbert McCallum rented from c.1914-1923 when he built a home in Westminster Street. It is his son Archie who can just be seen on the front steps. Archie remembers the 2 storied stables with a gantry for hauling feed sacks up with a block and tackle, then a polished wood slide to send the feed down. The McCallum children and local friends found this to be a marvellous slide. David McPhie, ex-police force, lived here with his family from 1923-c.1950. Raheen is a 120 year old Victorian house owned by Richard and Jeanne Pratt. Mrs Jeanne Pratt commissioned the book and this copy was presented to Sue Barnett on a visit by members of the Boroondara Historical Societies. 7-9 Russell Street has had 2 house names: ‘Vavau’ and ‘Handsworth’. Early occupants were: 1887–1892: George Legge, builder. 1892-1902: Arthur Greenwood – storeman and missionary in Tonga, hence the house name ‘Vavau.’ 1902–1950s: Mr and Mrs George Jackson and family of 10 children. Alice Jackson was a specialist manufacturing jeweller and set up a jewellery business with her husband. He and the family continued it until late 1950s. 1978–1986: Sold in late 1950s; Ruth Theodoris and her husband Peter bought it; sold 1986. The house is extant in 2020 and was last sold in May 2009 for $1,315,000. Real estate agent photos from the time reveal it has had a large extension at the rear. At that date the N.A.V. for the property was £270 while in the following year the N.A.V. increased to £350 with a note of 'additions' being made, recorded in the Rate Books. The works were undertaken for Robinson by the leadng architect, Harold Desbrowe Annear, and appear to have been a comprehensive remodelling of the Victorian house on the site, the outline of which was clearly depicted in the MMBW plan of 1903. 'Fairview' is of significance as a comprehensive remodelling of a Vietorian house undertaken in the 1930s by the leading architect of the time, Harold Desbrowe Annear. The 1930s are integral to the significance of the whole. David Miller (Dave) Mair (1879-1938) married Lily Vipond Deakin (1890-1945) in 1910. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Lily initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Dave walked across the gardens to work at the MCG. He never drove or owned a car. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Electoral roll details: 1919 68 Park Street, Hawthorn 1922 24 Louise Avenue, Mont Albert 1924 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert So, Shirley would have been born while they were at Barton Street. On the basis of these dates, this may have been taken in Hawthorn. Identification of 'Grannie': If this is Lily's mother her name is Janet Deakin (nee Longmore - 1851-1939). If it is Dave's mother her name is Isabel Brown (1855-1944). The other woman is identified as May Little, who helped in the house. Dave Mair was a very keen sportsman. A sepia photo of a well-dressed family in and beside a buggy. The group is comprised of a man, 3 women and 3 children. The house was built in 1883, possibly to encourage development of housing on the first urban land subdivision in Surrey Hills, the Windsor Park Estate (in the Windsor Crescent area). This coincided with the opening of the Surrey Hills Railway station. The first occupant was John Brown Nicholson, police magistrate.
