Letter - LETTER, WW1
"Pte James W. FRAKEL"23020 was a member of the 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment during WW1. His brother John requested that he give some details of the time since his enlistment. The letter is quite a detailed account from his enlistment to his injury and demob. Moved to Australia 19201, Tattered original letter from Pte James Farrel, from Feb 4th 1916, describing his history in the Army. Written on brown paper in small neat hand writing. Some pages torn in half. In total 20 pages. 2. Photocopy of the original letter on letter size paper over 10 pages. Copy in black and white with extra copy of 1st page in colour. 3. Enlisted No 563 on 6.4.1915 age 21 years in 13th Light Horse B Sqd, embarked for Eygpt 28.5.1915, record is unclear as states again embarked 5.9.1915 and then disembark Eygpt from Mudros early 1916, does not clearly state going to Gallipoli. Hospital 27.4.1916 (unclear) rejoin unit 28.4.1916, embark for France 2.6.1916, taken on strength of 1st Anzac Army Corps LH Regt 7.7.1916, hospital 4.10.1917 with “Boils, Debility”, from here he is diagnosed with Chronic Bronchitis and returns to Australia 21.4.1918, discharged Medically unfit 17.7.1918.1. White postcard. French writing and address on back. Front has silk embroidered material attached with a small card in pocket. Embroidered image of woman in dress with UK/Belgium/French flags on it. 2. Small card with picture of child holding presents, playing in the snow and message "A Loving Kiss" and message on back., 3. R.A.M.C. = Royal Army Medical Corps - British. Uniform issued to Captain McKenzie. refer Cat No. 7875.5 and 7876.2.1. Jacket - black and crimson colour wool velvet type fabric. Crimson colour fabric on collar and sleeve cuffs with gold braid edging. Mandarin collar with two gold and silver metal collar badges - crown, snake on pole, laurel wreath and ribbon scroll with lettering - "ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS" - British - Tailor made uniform. Shoulder epaulettes - gold colour twisted braid with two gold, blue and green metal rank pips = Lieutenant. on right epaulette. Gold colour metal buttons with shank, raised emblem and lettering - (same as collar badges). Lining - combination top gold colour, lower black colour silk fabric. Sleeve - white colour cotton fabric. At waist red leather lining strip. Brass colour metal belt hooks. Manufacturers label on white cotton fabric, inside on collar. 2. Trousers - stirrup pant style, black colour wool fabric, six button fly. Crimson colour, wool fabric. Three 1.5 cm strip down each side. Black colour bakelite buttons. White colour cotton fabric lining to waistband. At ankles - black leather straps with metal buckle. Frame 11. Photo 1. Welcoming home committee, nearly there. Photo 2. On Australian soil at last. The 'Karmala' berthed at 3MD Melbourne at the "Outer West New Pier" for the Victorians. It is not known if this is the pier at this point. Photo 3. Home at Tragowel, Victoria, some nine miles south of Kerang. Rear, Emily Grinton, Arthur Grinton, Bert and May Grinton. Front. Hughina Grinton and possibly Grace McLeod, Hughina's sister. Photo 4. The opening of the Memorial at Macorna 5/3/1920. Macorna is about 5 kilometres south of Tragowel, both places being on the railway line. Left to right in the photo; Lieut F. Dunn, Cr Charlie Cook, Brigadier General Brand, Rev. G. R. Jones (Kerang) and Mr H. Angus MLA. Music was played by the Mead Brass Band. Frame 10. Photo 1. A group of Sergeants on the deck of the Karmala. Jack and Bert were the only Sergeants from the 45th quota from the original Battalion on the Karmala. There were two other Sergeants who had transferred to the 38th, one in Oct 1918, Sgt R. L. Glover from the 37th Batt and Sgt F. Perkins also from the 37th who transferred in April 1919. Both are or should be in the collection of photos. Photo 2. life on deck of the Karmalal. Photo 3. A group of nurses on the Karmala. In the family collection there are two faded sepia photos showing the others not in this negative. The negatives to these are missing. From the War Diary of the Karmala there were ten nurses on the Karmala and there are ten nurses in the photos. There was also the ship's Medical Officer who is hidden in this negative. The ship's S.M.O. was Captain C. P. Rosenthal from the 33rd Batt HQ. General Birdwood presented medals to the 38th Batt who were resting at Allonville for 2 weeks. Photo 2. The "Rising Sun Badge" believed to be the one on Salisbury Plain in England. Photo 3. A group of 38th Batt soldiers with a smartly dressed up young lad. Photo 4. A group of 38th Batt soldiers. The place is Havre France and the date is early 1919 prior to leaving for England. 1st on the left we believe is Fred Lehman MM, 3rd from left is Sgt J Coffey. Some of the others are in other photos and although not identified we believe they are some of the senior Officers in the 38th Batt and who were in the 45th Quota. Frame 5. Photo 1. Lonely graves on a battlefield. This has been identified as "Vaire Wood cemetery" just south of the Somme at Vaire-sous-Corbie. Some 28 diggers from Vaire Wood were later reburied at Crucifix Corner Cemetery at Villers Bretonneux. Photo 2 and 3. Two photos, troop train luxury travel. This is possibly 45th quota men 'en route' from Gamaches to Havre in early 1919. From Havre they sailed for England on the "Prince George". Photo 4. Bert Grinton receiving his "DCM" from Lady Denman for actions around Clery on 31/8/1918. His CITATION reads: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Clery on 31st August 1918. he became detached from his Company and joined another party in the advance. mainly through his assistance with a Lews Gun, they cleared an enemy trench, killing about 30 and capturing several machine guns. he got on top of the trench and under heavy fire silenced a field gun which was firing over open sights. Frame 4. Photo 1. Curlu, Hem, Vaux area which can be seen written faintly at the bottom of the photo. These are 3 small villages near where Bert Grinton won his DCM. The villages are along the Somme River. The nearest towns of note are Mont St Quentin and Perrone. Photo 2. Four graves, left to right. 1. Lance Corporal George Grimshaw, No 887 38th Batt, KIA 28/8/1918 aged 24 years. He embarked with C Coy on the Runic and the embarkation rolls state that he was a farm labourer from Gasquil East Victoria. His final resting place is the Hem Farm Military cemetery, Hem Monacu. 2. Corporal Vincent Thomas Stanley Wyniat, No 709, 38th Batt, KIA 28/8/1918 aged 28 years. h embarked with D Coy on the Runic and the embarkation rolls state that he was a labourer of Edenhope, Vic. His final resting place is also Hem Farm. 3. Two graves left to right. Private W McEwan, No 7067, 38th Batt, KIA 31/8/1918 aged 36 years. He was actually William Lowrie Allison from NSW enlisting under the name McEwan. His final resting place is the Perrone Communal Cemetery Extension. he is buried there under the name "Allison". Private Norman John Warren Hoffmeyer, No 2339, 38th Batt, KIA 31/8/1918 aged 23 years. He embarked with the 4th reinforcements to the 38th per HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 20/10/1916. The embarkation rolls state that he was a farmer from Bendigo, Victoria. His final resting place is also Perrone. 4. Single grave. Private Cyril Edmund Andrew Dunn, No 3058, 38th Batt, KIA 31/8/1918 aged 22 years. He embarked with the 7th reinforcements to the 38th Batt per the HMAT A70 Ballarat on 19/2/1917. the embarkation rolls state that he was a Bank Clerk of East St Kilda. His final resting place is Hem Farm Military Cemetery, Hem Monacu. From other negatives we have identified some 15 graves. All these soldiers were KIA over the period 26 - 31 August 1918. Frame 3. Photo 1. Group Photo, mostly Sergeants. There are 3 medal winners in the group which appear to be military medals. There were 76 Military medal winners in the 38th plus 2 bars making 78. Jack Grinton is first on left in the top row. we are reasonably confident that we have identified several others. They are: Top row, 1st on the right No 262 CSM W.J. Durward (Bendigo). 2nd row, 2nd on left No 1612 Sgt J.E. Adams (Boinika) 3rd row, 1st on left No 446 CSM A. Clark (Abbotsford) 3rd row, 3rd from right No 1192 Sgt J. Coffey (Fitzroy) 3rd row, 2nd from right No 1194 Sgt J. Lockett (Mildura) Bottom row, 1st on left No 1048 Sgt F. Lehman MM (Horsham) Bottom row, 3rd on left No 1645 Sgt W. Hogan MID (Newport) These men would be a mixture of C and D Coy, 38th Batt. In Oct 1918 the 37th and 38th Batt's were so depleted that both were combined. A and B Coy 38th became C Coy and C and D Coy 38th became D Coy. The 37th Batt became A and B Coy, 38th Batt. Photo 2. Cartoon "Huttons the Best" with sign post either way. Medals were all awarded to soldiers returning from active service that identifies campaigns in which they served. Awarded to George Bailey Jackson No 2172 AIF. Refer 3446P for his Service details. Set of 3 WW1 service medals court mounted. 1. The 1914-15 Star - Red, white & blue ribbon with gold medal, star shaped, crown on top and crossed swords. 2. British War Medal 1914-1920. Orange ribbon with blue and white edges. King George on front of round silver medal, and mounting horse on back. 3. The Victory Medal. Purple, green, yellow and red ribbon, gold circular medal with angel on front. Inscription on back. Brass pin on back of blue velvet mount.1. 1914 Star has year 1914-15 Inscribed. 2.
