Functional object - Hat Box, John Brush, Son & Co, 1920s
... , MELBOURNE TO LONDON’, part of word ‘CABIN’ and “P & O” Label... TO LONDON’, part of word ‘CABIN’ and “P & O” Label, square, white ...This sturdy, deep hat box has been carefully constructed to give the contents utmost protection in the roughest of travel conditions. At the same time, attention to detail and quality of materials makes the box an attractive, desirable and useful piece of luggage. The supports inside the hat box show that the hat’s brim dipped at the front and back in the popular 1920s Homburg or Derby style. The hat box was likely to have been purchased, complete with its fashionable hat and personalised with the initials ‘G.M.’. The five shipping labels on the hat box tell that the owner traveller overseas with it on more than one occasion. The owner had first travelled with the shipping line Peninsular & Orient Steam Navigation Company, and may have been one the first Australian passengers in 1932, as the remnant of label on the base reads Sydney. The owner later voyaged under the company’s new name of P & O. and travelled from at least one of the voyages from Melbourne to London The square label, with “P & O” and red printed “M” in centre of circle, refers to alphabetical organisation of baggage by surname, connecting the owner ‘G.M.’ to the owner’s voyage with P & O. The P & O shipping line’s early beginnings started with the partnership of London ship broker Brodie McGhie Willcox and Scottish sailor Arthur Anderson in 1822. The partnership was joined by Irish shipowner Captain Richard Bourne in 1835 and they began operation as the Peninsular & Orient Steam Navigation Company with a service between London- Spain - Portugal. In 1932 the company expanded to include Australia with its passenger services departing from Sydney; in 1840 the company was incorporated. After various take-overs of other shipping lines and businesses, it operated under the name P & O. JOHN BRUSH The hat box was made by Australian saddle designer and maker, John Brush, Sons & Co. Brush began his saddlery trade in Roma, Queensland, His designing process included consulting with the men who rode and worked the horses. He was described in the Sydney Morning Herald of December 15, 1897, as a leading Sydney saddler, well known and reliable, with every kind of English and Australian saddle on view. John Brush established his business in 1840, operating from 371 George Street Sydney. A catalogue from that era jointly advertises John Brush (371 George Sty Sydney) and Butlers & Brush (432-4 Queen Street Sydney), both under the name of Edward Butler & Co. Pty. Ltd. The catalogue included saddlery, harness equipment, riding wear and travel goods, and strongly promoted the Wienkek made saddles, which he distributed Australia wide. John Brush, So & co. advertised its ‘new’ address in 1887, as 403 George Street Sydney. In 1898 Brush made a side-saddle for a customer, a design popular with gentlewomen of the era. The business was still operating over 100 years later, producing a catalogue in the 1950s.This early 20th century hat box is significant for being one of a kind in our Collection. Its fitted design shows the shape of the hat, dating it from the 1920s men’s fashions. The hat box is significant for being a high quality hat box made in Sydney, Australia by prominent and successful early colonial saddler and leather goods business, John Brush, Son & Co. The labels on the outside of the hat box are also significant, representing the prosperous lifestyle of an Australian traveller who purchased quality goods and cared for them. The traveller was able to depart from firstly the Port of Sydney and later the Port of Melbourne. Hatbox, oval shape, brown leather, strong, sturdy construction, six pieces, and metal lock on base. Wide lid, then tapers to a narrower base that has a red leather trim. Brown velvet fabric lining inside and covers some accessories. Other internal accessories are trimmed with plain red paper and blue and white striped paper. The lid has two attached leather tabs and a leather handle and underneath it has a drawstring liner and oval, gold-lettered maker’s label. The internal oval box has a leather retention strap and brim support. Separate moulded brim support is included. A detached leather strap with catch is inside the base. Inscriptions are stamped on the lid, printed on the maker’s label, attached as printed paper labels to the lid, sides, and under the base. Maker is John Brush, Son & Co. of Sydney. The owner’s initials “G.M” are embossed on the lid.Stamped on lid “G. M.” Label, oval, inside lid “JOHN BRUSH, SON & CO. / MANUFACTURERS & IMPORTERS / of / SADDLERY AND HARNESS / 403, GEORGE ST. / SYDNEY” Label, paper: “BAGGAGE, MELBOURNE TO LONDON’, part of word ‘CABIN’ and “P & O” Label, square, white background, black print, circular emblem: ‘PE - - - - - & ORIEN-’, ‘STEAM NAVIATION COMPY.’ BAGGAGE’ and a red printed “M” in centre of circle. Book, Dennington Cricket Club 1937-2007, 2008
This book gives details of the history of the Dennington Cricket Club from 1937 to 2007. Malcolm Kelson compiled the statistical batting and bowling details for each year and provided a summary of each year’s performance, including the results of every A Grade/Division One game played. The history of the Cricket Club and the personal profiles of long-serving club members were compiled by David Kelson. From 1937 to 1939 the Dennington Cricket Club competed in the Warrnambool Cricket Association competition. During World War Two the Dennington club was in recess and was re-formed in 1946. Today the club continues to play in the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association competition. The W.D.C.A. has 13 competing teams across three divisions. This book is of considerable interest as it contains the history of the Dennington Cricket Club, one of the important sporting clubs in Dennington, five kilometres north west of the Warrnambool Central Business District. This is a soft cover book of 202 pages. The front cover has a white background with a black and white photograph of the Dennington Cricket Ovals in 1968. The back cover has a white background with black and white photographs of the Ladies Committee in 1954 and the P. G. Kelson Pavilion in 1962. The title of the book is in red printing and there is an image of a red bulldog on the front cover. warrnambool and district cricket association, dennington cricket club, sport in the warrnambool district, history of warrnambool, malcolm kelson, david kelson -

Book, The Victorian Reading book - first edition, 1928 (first edition)
This is a first edition copy of the Victorian School Readers (Eighth Book) issued by the Education Department of Victoria. These readers were first published in 1928 and became standard texts for all school children up to Year Eight. They complemented the School Paper which had been published monthly for different year levels since the end of the 19th century. Both the Readers and the School Papers were in widespread use until the late 1940s and the early 1950s. William McCullagh and his wife Margaret had the property Oak Grove at Yangery at the end of the 19th century and in the early decades of the 20th century. Yangery is an agricultural area situated between Woodford and Koroit. There is a record of Silvie Jean McCullagh (parents – William and Margaret) born in 1914 and this is probably the person who owned and used this reader. This book is of interest not only because it is a first edition copy of one of the well-known Victorian School Readers but also because it was connected to the McCullagh family of Oak Grove, Yangery. This is a hard cover book of 260 pages. The cover was originally a burnished brown colour but the book has been covered with a mottled patterned cloth material (red, green and brown). The cover is partly torn off at the bottom of the spine. The book has poetry and prose extracts and includes many black and white sketches, maps, photographs and illustrations. The inscription and some other annotations throughout the book are handwritten in pencil. ‘Sylvia McCullagh, Oak Grove, Yangery, Dennington P. Mixed media - Calendar, P L Phillips & Co, 1919
Mr P L Phillips operated a general store in Liebig Street in the early part of the 20th Century. He was a highly regarded member of the community. He was community minded and promoted support for local industry, advertising his locally made or sourced products. He and his wife were involved in the Congregational church and music. He was mentioned in The Warrnambool Standard as arranging an Honour Roll for the Aboriginal soldiers who fought in WW1, with two losing their lives. The Nestle Company has been a long established business and major employer in Warrnambool (Dennington) since the early 20th century until it was purchased by Fonterra around 2000. The significance of this item lies in the connection of a large company with a strong presence in Warrnambool, and a small business combining to promote a patriotic theme which would have been very important in the days proceeding the First World War. Light white card with details enclosed within a light grey frame and text. Nestle Milk is in large text across the top, above a coloured picture depicting soldier and sailor in uniform in oval with kangaroo and emu in gold. A brown bulldog stands above in front of the Australian flag and on top of the Union Jack. Nestle product advertising is on both sides of this picture. Calendar details are at the bottom with P.L. Phillips & Co details in the centre. Metal strip along top and bottom.Cloth tag at top. Defence not Defiance at base of picture. Molly Wicking in black ink at bottom of calendar. Plate, Commercial Hotel W'bool, 1920s or 1930s
This plate comes from the Commercial Hotel in Warrnambool. This hotel, situated on the north west corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, Warrnambool, was established in 1865. It was built by Thomas Mickle and the first licensee was Charles Anderson. From 1928 on the O’Dwyer family was associated with the Commercial Hotel, either as licensees or owners, for fifty years. The plate would have been first used during the times when Patrick O’Dwyer was the licensee – 1928-1931 and 1932 to 1934. Today the Commercial Hotel still trades as the Whalers Hotel. This plate is of interest as it is a memento of the 1920s and 30s when Patrick O’Dwyer was the licensee of the Commercial Hotel. This hotel, trading today as the Whalers Hotel, is the oldest hotel in Warrnambool and a prominent landmark in the city. This is a white china plate (dinner plate size) with the inner section slightly recessed. The plate has a black line around the outer rim and initials and a hotel name in a scroll pattern on one outer edge. The names of the maker and supplier are on the base of the plate and the top of the plate is somewhat stained. ‘P O’D Commercial Hotel Warrnambool’ ‘Made expressly for John Dynon and Sons, Melbourne Vitrified Globe Pottery Co.
