Diggers & Mining. Diggers and miners. In some localities, diggers formed co-operative parties to mine for gold in a small way. But, in general, the exploration of deeper deposits was outside the capacity of the diggers, who lacked both the capacity of the diggers, who lacked both the capital and the technical knowledge required. Eventually, as the yields from near-the-surface deposits declined, diggers would leave the field. Generally a field declined in importance gradually; but, if reports of another rich diggings began to circulate, thousands might leave a field in a few days - as they left Fiery Creek (Beaufort) for Ararat in 1857.
