The photograph was taken at the 1976 Annual Ithacan Philanthropic Society Ball which celebrated 60 years since the formation of the society. This group of loyal supporters of the IPS are about to blow out the 60 candles to mark the occasion. Most of the ladies in the photograph arrived in Australia from Ithaca during the first half of the twentieth century. They are photographed with Peter Lucas, who served on the IPS Committee for many years. The ladies are from L-R: Dora Callis, Kalypso Sofianos, Anthoula (Anthi) Chilianis, Matina Dracoulis, Ioulia Raftopoulos, Kassiana Raftopoulos, Aspasia Flocas. The lady pictured is Efstathia (Toula) Black (Mavrokefalos) nee Raftopoulos. Toula married Constantine Mavrokefalos. Toula was president of the first Greek women's committee established in Melbourne in 1917, the Greek Women's Oganisation. Constantine was a founding member of the IPS. Her daughter's Nina and Olga Black were both very active in the Ithacan and Greek communities. The portrait photograph is of Nina (Regina) Black (Mavrokefalos). Nina is the first born of Constantine and Efstathia (Toula) Mavrokefalou. Her father was a founding member of the Society and her mother was President of the first Greek women's committee established in Melbourne in 1917, the Greek Women's Organisation. Nina was well known for her contribution to Greek community life. Nina was a member of Ladies' Auxiliary of the IPS in the 1950s and held the position of treasurer. Nina was also a member of AHEPA and the first president of the Daughters of Penelope. She taught Greek at the Greek Community school as well as to non-Greeks at the Council of Adult Education. Nina also performed in Greek theatrical productions and taught Greek dance to Greeks and non-Greeks. In 1985 Nina Black received the Hellenic Distinction Award for her contribution to Greek language and cultural pursuits in Australia and during the Bicentennial celebrations (1988) she was honoured by the Australian Government for achievements in the wider Australian community. The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society 'The Ulysses' was formed in 1944 to raise funds for the Ithacan War Sufferers patriotic Fund. The women were also active raising money for the war effort and sending clothing parcels to Ithaca. After the war the Ladies' Auxiliary directed its efforts to the organisation of social functions many of which raised funds for various philanthropic purposes. In 1985 the Ladies' Auxiliary ceased operation as women were able to be nominated for election to the Executive Committee. Since then women have been continuously been voted members of the executive committee. A social committee, made up of men and women, coordinates social functions.The Ladies' Auxiliary played an important role in providing a social outlet for women to play an active role in the many club's activities over the years. It helped to pave the way for other similar women's groups within the Greek and other migrant communities. The minute book is a record of meetings conducted from 17th August 1949 to 19th October 1955. A foolscap size bound minute book with a maroon binding on the spine and green and black marbled paper on the front and back cover covers. On the front cover there is a white stick-on label with a navy blue border and writing On the inside front and back covers there is a blue and white patterned marbled paper. Photograph, Earthquakes: Rebuilding the Church of Taxiarchion, Ithaca, 1953
The 1953 catastrophic earthquakes on Ithaca and nearby Cephalonia caused extensive damage destroying many houses and buildings. The tremors reached 7.2 on the Richter Scale and the devastation was exacerbated by the quake occurring at midday when many people were cooking so fires spread rapidly across the island. The Holy Church of Taxiarchion, located in northern Ithaca on the hill overlooking the village of Platrithia and Afales Bay, was extensively damaged. A committee was formed to rebuild the church and its reconstruction following the earthquake is testament to the determination and resilience of the island's people to overcome hardship and disasters. The Taxiarches church, located on top of Monastery Hill overlooking the village of Platrithia, was being rebuilt followingits total destruction caused by the earthquake across the Ionian Islands in 1953. The earthquake which reached 7.2 on the Richter Scale totally destroyed many towns and villages. A committee was formed to rebuild the church which is now considered to be one of the most beautiful churches on Ithaca.A black and white photograph of workmen rebuilding a damaged structure. The earthquake in 1953 which reached 7.2 on the Richter Scale caused extensive damage and devastation across the island of Ithaca. Entire villages were totally destroyed and a committee was formed to rebuild the beautiful Church of Taxiarchon which is located on top of Monastery Hill and overlooks the village of Platrithia. The minute book was compiled by committee members of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society and is a record of the club's activities from its inception in October 1916 to January 1927. The entries are written in the Greek language as most of the members of then committee during the club's early were more fluent in Greek than English.The first minute book has a record of the inaugural meeting of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society in October 1916 and subsequent meetings until January 1927. Through these records it is possible to gain information about the club's philanthropic objectives, its members and activities during those early decades of the twentieth century. The records also provide an insight into the settlement in Melbourne of Ithacan Greek community and the settlers' determination to succeed in their adopted country while retaining the ties with their homeland. A foolscap size bound book with a tan leather binding and green marbled cloth on the front and back covers. The four corners have been finished in tan leather. There is a white label with blue borders stuck on the top of the fron cover. The inside front and back covers have been finished with mauve, blue and white marbled paper. The minute book is a record of the meetings of the Executive Committee of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from July 1944 to April 1955. The minutes are written in Greek. The minutes recorded provide an insight into the decisions of the Executive Committee and philanthropic activities of the club and its activities within the Ithacan community in Melbourne during the closing years of World War II and the immediate post-war years. A foolscap size bound minute book with leather binding on the spine and brown leather corners. There is green cloth on the covers with blue marbled paper on the inside covers and white cotton tape reinforcing the inside of the cover. The pages on the outside edges are red. The minute book is a record of the decisions of the Executive Committee and activities of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from September 1955 to September 1968. The entries are written in Greek from December 1955 to October 1959. The remaining entries are written in English. It also treasurers' reports detailing the club's finances from its establishment in 1916 to 1923.This minute book is an important record of the decisions of the Executive Committee and club's activities for more than a decade from the middle of the 1950s to the end of the 1960s. It was a period of a second wave of Ithacans migrating to Melbourne following WWII and the 1953 earthquakes on Ithaca. It is also the period during which Ithaca House, the society's clubrooms, was constructed. A foolscap size bound ledger with tan suede binding on the spine and corners with a dark green cover. Dark pink and grey marbled patterned paper is on the inside front and back covers. Four white labels have been stuck onto the front cover, two along the side and two on the cover. a red label with 'Minute Book' printed in gold is on the spine. -

The minute book is a record of the decisions of the Executive Committee and the activities of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from March 1966, fifty years after the club's inception, to November 1972. The Greek Community from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne established a scout group in Box Hill. The group functioned until the late 1980s. The photograph was taken when the Governor came to inspect the group. The picnic was an annual event organised by the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from the early days of its inception and enjoyed by families. They were usually held at the beach or at a reserve in the countryside on Melbourne's rural fringe. The men in the photograph may have been the organising committee for the event.The annual picnics organised by the Ithacan Philanthropic Society gave members and their friends and families a chance to meet socially and to relax away from their workplaces. Initially men could only join the society so the women formed an auxiliary committee. They organised the social functions for the society. The photograph was taken at an Ithacan picnic held at Mentone Racecourse in 1935. Members of the IPS Committee are pictured with their families together with two official guests, Father Theophylaktos Papathanasopoulos from the Melbourne Orthodox Parish, and Father Timotheos Evangelimides, the Archbishop of the Greek Church in Australia, both pictured standing in the centre of the group. Vicki Raftopoulos(Black) is seated 3rd from the left and Arthur Raftopoulos is standing 3rd from right and Stathi Trohoulas is standing far right. Melbourne's first Greek Orthodox Church 'Evangelismos' in Victoria Parade East Melbourne was consecrated in 1901. Ithacans, as members of the Greek Orthodox Community, were directly involved in its establishment. A.J.Lucas the founding president of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society was one of a number of prominent Greeks who advanced funds to help with the purchase of the East Melbourne site upon which the church was built. Gentleman in the centre is unknown. Andreas Papadopoulos was a foundation member of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society in 1916 and secretary on the first Executive Committee. He recorded the minutes in 'katharevousa', the formal Greek language used in the judicial system, official documents, newspaper and publications at the time. He served as president from 1934-1939. The Ithacan Philanthropic Society has been donating to the Royal Children's Hospital since 1922. Easter fundraiser functions have been held at the clubrooms to support the annual Children's Hospital Appeal. The photo shows a group of IPS members presenting a cheque for $10000 to the hospital's Good Friday Appeal. Certificate, IPS Honorary Life Membership: certificate and medal, 17 December 1995
The certificate and medal were presented to Kalypso Sofianos when she was made an honorary life member of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society (IPS) in recognition of her contribution to the society. The certificate is written in Greek. Kalypso was presented with the award at the 1995 Members' Christmas Luncheon held at Ithaca House. Nominations for Honorary Life Membership of the IPS must be approved at an Annual General Meeting and endorsed by the Executive Committee.
