Print, Cr Henry Weedon MLA, & Suburban Mayors, 1907
An article in the Box Hill 'Reporter' (11 October 1907, p.2) refers to the presentation of the artefact to the Kew Town Hall. The report records: 'Presentation to Kew's Ex-Mayor In the mayor's room at Kew on Tuesday evening, Ex-Mayor Cr Wishart was made the recipient of a handsomely-illuminated and exquisitely-framed testimonial as a mark of appreciation by his colleagues of the highly satisfactory manner in which he had discharged the duties appertaining to the mayoral office. .... A framed group of the metropolitan mayors was subsequently presented by Cr Wishart as an addition to the pictures hung in the mayor's room.'The newspaper report in the Box Hill Reporter positively identifies the artefact and how it was placed in the Mayor's Room in the Walpole Street Town Hall. The collage is historically significant as it may include the only photograph of a mayor of a city at this period of time.A large framed photographic collage of Henry Weedon surrounded by the Mayors of Greater Melbourne (holding office for the year 1906-07). The photograph was assembled in recognition of the ‘slight favours to them’ showed by the Lord Mayor. The photograph is dated August 1907. Surrounding the central medallion is, from left to right: Cr. C. C. Mercy (Camberwell), Cr. T. L. Taylor (Northcote), Cr. Thos. Smith (Port Melbourne), Cr. W. Flintoft (Prahran), Cr. W. Document, Troedel & Co, Kew Volunteer Fire Brigade, Certificate of Membership, 1886
1879 - The Argus, Friday 11 July 1879, page 4. The Kew Borough Council having decided to initiate a fire brigade, invited volunteers to send in their names. About 40 complied with the invitation and met at the Town-hall to choose 12 of their number to form the brigade. The 12 elected then chose their officers as follows :— Councillor Gray, captain ; Mr. Thomas Greenhill, foreman ; and Mr. H. Loxton, secretary. The brigade decided to apply to the council for uniforms and a bell; and after adopting rules for their guidance the meeting separated. The brigade now possesses a reel and 500ft. of hose, and a shed is being erected in Little Walpole-street for a station. The council have applied for six additional fireplugs in the Main-road, so that the brigade may now be considered fairly established. The Volunteer Fire Brigade was replaced in 1891 by a detachment of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and a new Fire Station in Walton Street constructed in 1893; subsequently demolished in 1941.The certificate includes the only known image of the first fire station in Kew. Photographs – Skippy St Elmo and other skiers – Set of 8 black and white photographs
Skippy and Toni St Elmo were responsible for early developments at the Falls Creek resort and for promoting a love of skiing. They left Melbourne in 1945 and settled at Falls Creek and moved into the first building constructed of corrugated iron and timber at Falls Creek in 1946. They were Falls Creek’s first workers with Toni employed by the State Electricity Commission to record weather-related data up to the construction of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme. In 1957, Toni was involved in building the first rope tow called Nissen on the same route as the Summit Quad. He also established the Nissen Ski School with ski instructor Milan Kovacic and was involved in the building of the resort’s first ski club Bogong in 1949. Toni taught Skippy to ski and she practised on the High Plains where she and her husband lived. Skippy St Elmo won many ski races during the 1950’s and represented Australia in New Zealand.Skippy and Toni St Elmo were pioneers of the Falls Creek area, promoting local ski sports and tourism. The played an important role in opening up the Falls Creek area and developing its sporting potential by establishing the first ski school, ski lifts and early lodge facilities. Petersen of the Mitchell Hotel Bairnsdale, with the licence in the name of Mr Thomas Maguire (stepson of Petersen). William Archer was the proprietor at the time of the photograph. The coach driver was Sam Dyer and the coach is leaving for the goldfields at Combienbar. In June 1889 there was a rush to Mackenzie River, about 28 miles from Orbost, on Twelve Mile Creek. An estimated 80 men rushed the ground, but yields were patchy and large numbers eventually left. They were coming and going almost daily. The Club Hotel was the first hotel built in Orbost and remains a significant building in the town. It was an important hub for the township with many whole town meetings held there.A faded black / white photograph (with two copies) with a horse-drawn carriage loaded with men and the Orbost Club Hotel behind them. Document, Plan of Church of Christ Warrnambool, 1883
These plans have been drawn up in 1883 by the Warrnambool architect, William Patterson. They show six sections of plans for the erection of a Church of Christ at 12 Spence Street Warrnambool. The mason was William Kellas and the builder was Harold Dawkins. Church of Christ adherents began meeting in Warrnambool in 1875 and bought land in Spence Street in 1877. The church was opened in 1885 with visiting pastors until a resident minister, A. J. Fisher, was appointed in 1915. This church was closed early in the 21st century when a new church, Gateway Church of Christ, was opened in Ragland Parade in Warrnambool. These plans are of great interest as original ones of the Church of Christ In Spence Street Warrnambool. The plans have come from the present-day Warrnambool Church of Christ. The building still exists but is no longer is use as a church. These are two sheets of cream-coloured thick paper with scaled drawings of plan sections of the Church of Christ in Warrnambool. The drawings are in black ink with some sections coloured in. Both pages have a black line margin drawn around the edges. Equipment - 'Electroshock Therapy' Machine, Konvulsator 2077, Post 1930's
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was invented in Italy in the late 1930s. ECT is a medical treatment most commonly used in patients with severe major depression or bipolar disorder that has not responded to other treatments. Psychiatrists had already discovered that inducing seizures could relieve symptoms of mental illness. Before ECT, this was done with the use of chemicals, usually one called Metrazol. More can be read here: http://theconversation.com/electroconvulsive-therapy-a-history-of-controversy-but-also-of-help-70938 This machine was used both at Aradale Mental Hospital and J Ward.
