At the commencement of 1922, the property was purchased from the Independent Order of Rechabites with publicly subscribed funds and a new hall built at a cost of £750 and improved road access constructed to reduce the grade, running from Dudley Street to Henry Street. This hall was eventually replaced with the new Shire Offices and Hall built on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road, which was opened in 1941. Worn by three brides in 1941, 1944 and 1948. The dress was made for Eva Elizabeth (Bid) Harvey for her marriage to Morris Langlo West on 2 October 1941 at St James Catholic Church, North Road, Gardenvale. They had two children, Julian (1942-2005) and Sr. Elizabeth West (born 1942). Bid was born in 1906 to Michael and Kitty Harvey. They lived at 51 Cole Street, Elwood. The bridesmaid was Bid's niece Jocelyn Hickey. The dress was also worn by Jocelyne Dorothy Taylor when she married John Carlisle (Carl) Harvey (Bid's brother) at James Catholic Church, Gardenvale on 30 June 1944. Jocelyne's bridesmaid was Jocelyn Hickey and the best man was Basil Robinson. The reception was held at 'Birdwood', Birdwood Avenue, Brighton. Jocelyne was born in Rangoon, Burma in 1921 and was the eldest daughter of Stanley and Dorothy Taylor. Carl was the only son of Michael and Kitty Harvey. Jocelyne and Carl lived at 15 Harwood Street, Elwood and later at 54 North Road, Brighton. They had five children, Michael, David, Jennifer, Robert and Eric. The third bride to wear the dress was Jocelyn Mary Hickey, who was bridesmaid to Bid and Jocelyne. Jocelyn Hickey was born in 1929 to Daniel and Doreen Hickey (Bid's sister and Jocelyne's sister-in-law). Jocelyn married Gerard Leslie O'Donnell at St James Catholic Church, Gardenvale in 1948. The bride's attendants were Adita Smith, Maureen Bow and Jacqueline Connell. The groom's attendants were Jack Fallon and Con O'Donnell. The reception was held at 51 Cole Street, Elwood. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 N.J. Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria. Wales Street State School poultry club lesson “Fresh eggs for breakfast will be available now in many Northcote homes. Mr Taylor of the Wales Street School, is explaining the points of a good hen to the members of the school poultry club.” Mr Taylor of Ballarat was founder of the largest Young Farmers’ Club in Western Victoria. He was also in charge of Grade 6 at Northcote’s Wales Street State School No. 3139 and president of their poultry club. The chook under inspection is the Australorp, an Australian breed developed from the UK Black Orpington and the US Rhode Island Red. It achieved world-wide popularity in the 1920s for its laying ability: in a 1922/23 world record, six hens laid an average of 309.5 eggs per hen during a 365 consecutive day trial. An instructor stands beside the chicken, holding a ruler, which rests lightly on the chicken’s neck. The boys wear shorts and shirts. Mostly they wear shoes or boots and socks, although one has bare feet. Some wear a jacket, some wear ties; one has braces. Their hair has been freshly brushed. One boy stands out from the group: he appears older than the others and wears a tie, shirt and blazer, with two badges on the lapel. The young teacher wears a slightly scruffy short suit with shirt and tie; the instructor wears a dark suit with tie and hat. The boys are carrying exercise books. They look to be around 10 years of age. Research by project volunteer, Louise McKenzie: From the text of the newspaper article we know this is the Wales Street Primary School, in Northcote. It opened in 1891 when it was known as the Prince of Wales Park State School. As a result of economic depression it closed in 1892, but reopened in 1900, and in 1920 reached its peak with 1232 pupils. The instructing teacher is Mr James Taylor, who was leader of the school’s Poultry Club. He wrote articles for the Age explaining that “since 1927 when the Young Farmers Clubs were first established in Victorian State schools, poultry keeping as a school project and a hobby has become extremely popular.” He encouraged girls and boys to become involved for profit and pleasure. White Leghorn and Australorp breeds were good egg producers, but most important were, “the 4 G’s of poultry farming:— grains, greens, grit and gumption — the latter being extremely important. One might be excused also for asking that the word "grit" be read with a double meaning. Brain sees through a thing, but grit sees it through. The successful person in poultry keeping is he or she who continues to work well with the birds long after the novelty has died off.” According to a visitor to the Poultry Club, expert farmer Mr Buscomb of NUPHA, the key features of a good bird were that it should be "as wide as possible across the saddle, have a clean face, close feathers, bayonet shaped legs, and fine textured combs and wattles." The Australorp is a chicken breed of Australian origin, developed out of Black Orpington (UK) and Rhode Island Red birds. White Leghorn, Langshan and Minorca elements were also added, resulting in a very utilitarian bird known as the Australian Black Orpington (Austral-orp). It achieved world-wide popularity in the 1920s for its laying ability. In 1922-23 a team of six hens set a world record by laying 1857 eggs for an average of 309.5 eggs per hen during a 365 consecutive day trial. In Australia the Australorp is recognised in black, white and blue colouring. The Weekly Times of Saturday 24 February 1934 reported that Mr James Taylor of Ballarat, founder of the largest Young Farmers’ club in Victoria (at Murtoa) was now in charge of Grade 6 at the Wales Street State School No. 3139 and was president of their poultry club. This feature followed in The Age of 16 March 1934, with another in 28 December 1934. The topic is again featured in the Weekly Times of April 1935 – Mr Taylor was making quite an impact! This book contains a biography of H.G. Wells by Vincent Brome and is part of Flagstaff Hill’s Pattison Collection of books which originated from the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute. It was published by Longmans, Green & Co. The publisher firm, Longmans, Green & Co, was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The book is significant for its connection to the publisher Longmans, Green and Co., of London, a firm that has been established for over two centuries, renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. Copies made from original register held by Eltham Primary School as part of the school's sesquicentennial recognition 1856-2006. Lists students by registration number commencing with William John Taylor (No. 1) in 1864. Initially recorded as the Register of the Common School at Eltham No. 209, it lists child's name, years of attendance and classes attended, age when first admitted, date of admsission, date of leaving and occupation of parents. The register was revised to the Register of the State School at Eltham No. 209 capturing students from 1873. Some overlap between the two variants exists. The latter register includes additional information of date of passing the Standard of Education, names of parent or guardian and residence of parent or guardian. The register was discontinued in 1917. Tait collection: item 29 of 62 This document contains information on the Will and Letters of Administration of James Jones, a gardener from Warrnambool. The document indicates that he died intestate in August 1896 at the age of 57 but details of a will are included in the document. The fact that this document was drawn up 14 years after his death indicates that there was a problem with the will. James Jones left real estate to the value of £80 and personal estate to the value of £10. The sole beneficiary was his widow, Mary Ann Jones. No other information has been found on James Jones. No Warrnambool lawyer is mentioned in this document but it was located at the former legal premises in Kepler Street of Mackay Taylor and passed on to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in 2014. It is presumed that it had been passed down to successive lawyers occupying the same building since 1910. This document is of interest because it contains information on the Will and Letters of Administration of a Warrnambool resident, James Jones. He left real estate to the value of £200 and personal estate to the value of £43. The beneficiaries were his daughter Harriet Jones, his son Frederick Augustus Jones and his grandson, Claude Eagle. No other information has been found on Frederick Jones, Senior. This document was in the possession of Ernest Chambers who had legal offices in Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Koroit at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It was then passed down to successive lawyers occupying the legal premises in Kepler Street and located in 2014 in the same building, the former offices of Mackay Taylor. It was then passed on to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This is a cream-coloured piece of parchment folded in two containing handwritten material on the Probate of Frederick Jones of Nirranda, 1911. Two of the pages have ruled black lines. Tait collection: item 35 of 62 This is a document giving details of the Letters of Administration following the death of Alexander Gibson McPherson, a farmer of Rochester, Victoria, in December 1883. He died intestate and left an estate worth £215. The beneficiary was his sister, Mary Wright of Somerton. No other details are available on Alexander McPherson. The lawyer in the case was Ernest Chambers who had legal offices in Port Fairy, Warrnambool and Koroit at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. This document was in his possession at his Warrnambool office and passed down to successive lawyers occupying legal premises in Kepler Street. The document was found in the same building, the former premises of the legal firm, Mackay Taylor, where it was located in 2014 and handed over to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society.This document is only of interest as being originally in the possession of Ernest Chambers, a lawyer who was in Warrnambool for several years at the end of the 19th century. No connection between Warrnambool and Alexander McPherson has been found. This is a cream-coloured sheet of parchment paper, folded twice. It contains hand written material in brown ink giving details of the Letters of Administration following the death of Alexander McPherson of Rochester in 1883. A seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with a green ribbon and it has ,a black stamp of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court of Victoria. One page has been ruled at the edges with brown lines. The writing is somewhat faded but the document is legible. from EDHS Newsletter No. 122, September 1998 - There is a new display in our local history cabinet in the Eltham Library. This time we have used our growing collection of material on Eltham, England. It includes the painting by Lionel Backhurst presented to us on behalf of Eltham Society by Clifford Crate. The booklet on the Eltham town sign that Clifford also brought is in loose leaf format so we have been able to include the whole of that which really presents an excellent summary of the important historic buildings of Eltham. Also on display is another painting by Lionel which was presented to Russell and Marion Yeoman. Tait collection: item 41 of 62 This document gives the details of the Will and Probate of Henry Phillips who died in Warrnambool in 1895 at the age of 55. He came to Australia from England in 1861 and established a hay and corn store in Liebig Street, Warrnambool. He was a prominent member of the Congregational Church and lived at ‘Ilfracombe’ in Lava Street. He and his wife Emma had eight children, two of whom had businesses in Warrnambool. Henry Phillips left personal estate to the value of £521 and the beneficiaries were his wife, Emma and their children. This document came into the possession of a Warrnambool lawyer, Ernest Chambers and passed down to successive lawyers occupying legal premises in Kepler Street. The document was located in this building in 2014 in the former premises of the law firm of Mackay Taylor. This document is of considerable importance as it contains details of the Will and Probate of Henry Phillips. He was a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the 19th century. The document will be useful to researchers. This is a cream-coloured piece of parchment paper folded in two and containing the Will and Probate details of Henry Phillips, a Warrnambool hay and corn merchant who died in 1895. The document has handwritten material (black ink) on three sides of the paper. A seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with a green ribbon and there is one red stamp of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court on the second page. The handwriting is fading in some places but is still legible. Ticket to picnic at Park Orchards on 21 December 1936, organised by the St Kilda Unemployed Organisation with the support of the St Kilda City Council, Mayor (Cr Alfred Levy), Archie Michaelis MLA, and 'other well-known gentlemen'. The ticket appears to have been perforated to allow vouchers, printed on the back (for bus, dinner, toys, stockings, ice cream and tea) to be separated and used. Park Orchards is a residential suburb 23km north east of Melbourne that was created in 1925 on land used for orchards when timber merchants Australis Sharp and John Taylor launched the Park Orchards Country Club estate. Buyers were not attracted to the estate, and for many years all that existed were a clubhouse and various sporting facilities. The Jackson family were manufacturing jewellers who lived at 7 Russell Street and had their business factory next door at 9 Russell Street. George James Jackson born 1868 in Handsworth, Staffordshire married Alice Eleanor Taylor, born 1868, in 1890. The house in Russell STreet was named 'Handsworth'. They had a large family - this list may not be complete: William George (1894-1895), George Hall (1896-1984), Gertrude Annie (1898-1989), Edward James (1900-1937), Allan Alfred (1902-1969), Joseph (1904-1954), Henry Hadley (1905-1958), Eleanor Isobel (1911-1984), Sylvia May (1914-2008) and Alice Louise (dates not known). George died in 1950; Alice died in 1924. Photographs of handicap dependents at enjoying music and dance from a military band that featured in an edition of the Answer. There were frequent events and activities organised by Melbourne Legacy for handicapped dependents. The Junior Legatees, with many mums and friends of Legacy went to the Defence Force School at Watsonia Barracks and were treated to a performance by the 2/10 Medium Regiment Band. The Bandmaster was WOI Dave Farrell and there was a surprise visit by a clown. According to the article "Former JL Sharon Taylor, now a corporal with 'Visits Protocol and Ceremonial' at the Defence Centre - Melbourne, gave a moving tribute to Legacy in recognition of the support she had received as a young girl. Junior Legatees were given an opportunity to play some of the musical instruments and the enjoyment is evident as the photos show." Annual report of the Association for the Advancement of the Blind outlined activities and events over the year, including the death of one of the original members Charles D. The F.R.E.D otherwise known as the “F*cking Ridiculous Eating Device” was introduced in 1943 as part of Sir Stanton Hicks' "Operation Ration Type O2," Australia's first military rations that lasted 24 full hours. This F.R.E.D. matches the second iteration of the combination can opener and spoon popularised during the Vietnam War, and belonged to the uncle of Ian Taylor. Ian remembers his uncle telling him about using F.R.E.D. during WWII, primarily to open baked beans. It is claimed in some military histories that, after the F.R.E.D.’s introduction in 1943, Australian soldiers developed a ‘strange attachment’ to the F.R.E.D., keeping the utensils far after their service was up and, in this case, passing them on to future generations as bean openers. Huon took up his country in 1836, living then about 13 miles from the present homestead, the front portion of which was built about 1870. The actual age of an earlier portion is not known. Excellent for "Barmagulla". Image 2: "THE HERMITAGE" - Home of the Taylor family, is 13 miles from Wodonga. It was begun in 1852 and finished in 1854, and is the oldest occupied home in the area. The original atmosphere of the interior is maintained. As "Gooloora" its little balcony would provide a splendid vantage point for MacLough's speech. Thomas Crouch Watts was born on March 7th. 1865, to Joseph and Susan Watts. Before the real estate business commenced, Thomas and his brother were in partnership as booksellers and stationers in a shop at View Point. Thomas lived in a fine house in Rowan Street, which was called 'Ottawa' Thomas started his real estate business in the early 1900s in a shop in View Street. His daughter Edna was the book keeper and typist, Stewart Watson was the salesman and Stanley Phipps (Edith Lunn's father) was the property manager and valuer. When Thomas Watts died in 1914, his daughter took over the running of the business. She married Stewart Watson in 1918. Eventually the name of the business was changed to Bishop and Earl. From a letter from Edith Lunn re T.C. Watts & Son. 'The firm of T.C. Watts & Son later became Bishop and Earl. When the firm of Bishop and Earl ceased to operate after the death of Edith Lunn's father, S.P. Bishop, Miss. June Parry, Secretary of the BHS was a member of staff.
