Despite the expected damage bill of $1 million, the school's Principal Peter Cowell is staying positive. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade district officer, Phillip Taylor, describes the blaze as "the biggest in the eastern district since the last fire at the school". Eight classrooms, three of them science rooms, were destroyed in the fire which began at 10.20pm on Saturday, November 7. Of concern was the 165 VCE students who began their exams on Monday, but Cowell said: "There will be concessions made where they are needed".
