Interior of official programme contains a brief history of Ringwood High School since 1954 when it opened with only Forms 1 & 2. Also included is an explanation of the establishment of the Parents and Citizens Association, and the differemt stages of building until a more complete school was established. On page 4, the Programme for the day of the official opening in 1958 is included, followed by the Ringwood High School song, which had the words written by Mr W. L. Thomas and the music created by Miss H.P. Thomas.

Ringwood's three secondary schools will soon decide if they should amalgamate or consider other forms of merger. It is anticipated that enrolments will fall by up to a third in the next 5 years and this could affect a school's ability to offer a range of curriculum choices.

Secret moves to shift the Ringwood Secondary College and secure a site for a proposed outer east university campus have sparked outrage. The confidential Ringwood City Council proposal has angered parties which, although directly involved, have not been consulted.

Ringwood Secondary College wants to take over Eastern Secondary College in a radical plan put to the Education Department. It has even been suggested Eastern could sell its site and the money be used to provide additional facilities at the Ringwood College's Bedford Park site for the combined schools. Eastern's principal, Mr Bill Sheridan, said that Ringwood Secondary College's proposal smacked of "arrogance".

The Ringwood Secondary College touring band has embarked upon its 13th annual tour. This year the band will perform at venues throughout East Gippsland. Comprising 110 students and 11 staff members they will travel throughout the Lakes District performing 11 concerts at Sale, Maffra, Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance and Orbost. Students this year blitzed teams fromNorwood, MMaroondah, Croydon, East Burwood, Heathmont and Parkwood, winning all junior, intermediate and seniorsections and scooping the Aggregate Pennant. Ringwood Secondary College's head prefect David Fearnley has won the Caltex All-Rounder Award for his scholastic and extra-curricular achievements in 1992. He represented the school in golf, basketball, baseball and debating. Girl head prefect Natalie Barton won the VCE prizes for physics and biology and was the winner of the Yamaha music award. Last of a series of farewell parties in honour of Mr. J. R. Bennett, the retiring Headmaster of Ringwood High School, was given by the teaching staff last Friday morning. Following a great variety of tributes expressing the goodwill and appreciation of the staff, Mr Harry Hudson presented Mr. Bennett with a water colour of the school painted by himself and autographed by all the staff. Mr Bennett expressed great pleasure in the pleasant surprise this little informal gathering had turned out to be. And he hoped, he said, in the years to come there would be some reference to "Jim Bennett's school"

Following the proposal at the previous council meeting to enter into negotiations for the purchase of Bedford Park Estate, comprising 26 acres, situated in Bedford Rd., Ringwood, the Mayor and the Town Clerk interviewed the trustees of the estate and the Mayor submitted to the meeting the price and conditions under which the property could be purchased. The Mayor, Cr. T. R. G. Williams, said the negotiations had been most satisfactory. The land was offered for £2,000, with £250 deposit and £250 per year, with the balance payable at the end of five years. The estate would prove a valuable asset to the borough, and could be used for a high school and a park.

In glorious weather the Ringwood High School conducted its first Annual Inter-House Athletic Sports Meeting on the Ringwood Recreation Reserve on Wednesday, 22 September. There was a large attendance of interested parents and official visitors to encourage the young athletes

The skills the students are learning and the technology being developed by some of the corporate players involved in the 1994 Australian Mileage Marathon may eventually lead to savings for all of us at the petrol pumps of the future. This year's (1994) Mileage Marathon will be the sixth Ringwood Secondary College has competed in. Last year (1993) the school achieved its best result with the "Blue Thunder" team taking fourth place with a consumption rate equivalent to 877 mpg. In doing so the school beat some of the more fancied corporate entries. Laurie Bradford is the school's auto and metal trades' co-ordinator and has been involved with the school's mileage marathon attempts. Laurie believesthe reason the Blue Thunder team was so successful is the fact their vehicles were fairly simple and proved reliable.

Mail in Focus section - The Mail. Wednesday April 4, 1990. The school's high profile music program has run successfully for 10 years since Mr Neil Berry, who taught students to play brass instruments, started the first concert band. Further advancements were made under former classroom teachers, Judith Curphey, who is National Artistic Director of the Australian Girls' Choir and Jan Constable, organiser of the Melbourne Youth Music Council. Annual band tours, enjoyed by the students, also help the music department's excellent retention rate.

Ringwood Secondary College has continued to build on its reputation as a busy school, offering its students a rich range of educational experience. Activities that took place at the school over August confirm this. "My Fair Lady" had a 7 night season. The school hosted 15 Japanese students for three weeks and engaged in all types of educational experiences. Badminton, Hockey and athletics were successful. College bands and singing groups were in fine form. The SRC held a number of lunchtime activities. A visit to Scienceworks and garden working bees added to the myriad of August activities.

Ringwood Secondary College - A $100,000 Commonwealth Government grant was announced this week by Deakin MP Ken Aldred. Added to $214,000 from the state government, it will allow the school to complete its rebuilding program, funding two computer rooms, three general classrooms, a careers/welfare room and office area.

The achievements by Ringwood Secondary College students in 1992 had outweighed the devastation caused by the school's $1.7 million fire, principal Peter Cowell said last week. Mr Cowell said the fire had brought the school community closer together. Rebuilding work was expected to start in March.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade district officer, Phillip Taylor, describes the blaze as "the biggest in the eastern district since the last fire at the school". Jazz, pop, and old time favourites are part of the curriculum at Ringwood High School and all for the love of music. Year 12 students can elect to study Music A or B as part of their VCE.

The school will enter two commuter class cars designed and built by the year 10 automobile studies class. Driven by 50cc motorcycle engines the cars must complete three test runs at at a set average speed within a time limit. After being acting principal at Ringwood High for the past 13 months, Peter Cowell can finally move his possessions out of the deputy-principal's office. The Ministry of Education recently appointed Mr Cowell principal of Ringwood High after Ministry restructuring delayed the appointment by six months. Mr Cowell said not a lot will change with his new title. Mr Cowell has been at Ringwood High for nearly 5 years. Prior to this time, he taught at Neerim South, Myrtleford, Maffra, Moorabbin and Alexandra, "all great spots".

Before a large assemblage of V.I.P's, parents, friends, teachers and the boys and girls themselves, Ringwood High School was officially opened last Friday afternoon - after four years as a going concern- by the Minister of Education, the Hon. J.S. Bloomfield, M.L.A. One of the reasons for the delay of the official opening was that the school should be formally opened during the term of office of the retiring Head Master (Mr J.R. Bennett), a man who had qualified himself as a great Head Master, who had shown fine gifts of leadership and administrative ability allied to a warm humanity.

A large and enthusiastic audience of parents and friends showed warm approval of the cheerful program presented by the talented pupils of Ringwood High School at the Fourth Annual Speech Night held in the Ringwood Town Hall last Thursday night. Councillors and their wives, members of the Advisory Council, Parents and Citizens' Assoc. and the Ladies' Auxillary also turned up in force. The Hon. R. R. Rawson and Mrs Rawson were also in the official party. The President of the Advisory Council (Mr J.B. Harper) paid a tribute to the school's Headmaster, Mr J. R. Bennett. He said that this is the last Speech Night at which Mr Bennett would be the head of the school, as he would be retiring during 1958.

Areas of concern include staffing, educational excursions, drama and musical presentations, tending to the school plantation at Powelltown, efforts to establish a proper school library, general improvements of the school grounds , provision of different types of sporting facilities, painting of the school - inside and out, and additional seating in the school grounds. Geoff Buchanan was the President of the Ringwood High School Advisory Council. He prepared this report and he closed it with the very best wishes for the future students of the school.

This short history deals with the need for a high school at Bedford Park, which satisfied the need for a large piece of land for buildings and sporting facilities, the installation of Mr Bennett as headmaster, the growth of the student population, the retirement of Mr Bennett and the appointment of Mr Ormandy as headmaster. American Field Service Exchange Scholarships were instituted and a Cadet Corps started up. The construction of the Assembly Hall and the Physical Education Centre was initiated under Mr Ormandy and finished under his replacemnt, Mr Hodge. A new Science block was completed in 1969.

These clippings deal with the campaign by the local council to establish a higher elementary school, or high school, in the Ringwood area. The committee had been appointed and they had secured a site of 7 ½ acres about 54 chains from the railway station. It was proposed that the Council strike a rate of 3d in the pound for 4 years to meet the majority of the building expenses. The expected growth of Ringwood's population, aided by the railway access, and the almost universal agreement by the residents that a higher school is necessary, are positive signs that the plans will come to fruition in the near future. (The Ringwood High School was opened in 1954).

Notice to parents of Form IV pupils regarding choices of subjects for the Leaving Certificate - Form V of 1968. The advice includes that the student should not be asked to make the decision entirely alone - It is a matter for serious family consultation in conjunction with the school. Students should carefully consider their natural aptitude for, and previous successes and failures in the subjects of their choice. Sometimes there are serious mistakes made, for example, the course chosen is beyond the capacity of the student, the course does not lead to the pupil's desired career, or important pre-requisites have been omitted. When selecting a course, it must be borne in mind that this selection is only provisional. Final selection will depend on examination results at the end of the year, and if there are sufficient students wishing to take a particular subject. Any student wishing to proceed to a University degree in Arts is advised to take French or German as a Leaving Certificate subject.

This report to parents stresses the rising expectations of the quality of a good high school education and the facilities which should aid the community to join together to assist in this goal. Then the role of the Advisory Council is examined, which lists many ways that involve the council. The report stresses that money is needed in so many ways, and it lists the way that activities and goals are financed. Matters that have needed attention are listed, as are achievements and successes. The importance of the general appearance of the school and grounds is discussed, and the author/s are giving thanks to the parents who join others in helping out with their labour and their fund-raising participation. There is included a plea for more parents to join in. The author of this pamphlet is R.W. Gotts, the President of Ringwood High School Advisory Council.

Un-sourced and undated newspaper clipping, titled "Murals were highlight of school's art show", describes the contribution of several local schools to an exhibition of school art at Ringwood Lower Town Hall. In particular, a 12' x 12' mural which was created by four girls from Ringwood High School was carried to the Town Hall in pieces, and assembled by the same girls. They were Dulcie Ellis, the designer Anne Bennett, Margaret Norwood and Judy Finn. This article was found to be from circa 1958.

18 year old Trish Whittaker from Ringwood Secondary College is a very accomplished runner. Not only is she the fastest 800 metre school track runner, but she is unbeaten in school cross country events and recently won the school region, zone and state championships. Trish is the Ringwood/Croydon Mail Sports Star of the Week. Top coach Pam Turney (who coached Seoul Olympic runner Jackie Perkins) can take some of the credit for Trish's success.

14 year old Ringwood Secondary student, Chris Crough, is the proud winner of several gold medals at state level and swimming has become his first love. Previously, his favourite sports were surfing and water skiing. For his swimming efforts he has been chosen as The Ringwood/Croydon Mail junior sports star of the week. Chris is also a member of the Nunawading Swimming Pool Barclay Squad. His talents earned him a place on the Victorian Development Squad.

Ringwood Secondary College year 8 student, Andrew Hasell has set a new college record by winning all running events at the recent school sports. Andrew blitzed the competition to take out the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m, all in one day. College vice-principal Gerry Robinson said it was a great achievement. "Never before has anything like this been done", he said. Andrew then went on to win the boys' interschool cross country event against seven other schools and 40 competitors.

Students of Ringwood Secondary College are miles ahead of the rest. They were entries in the 1993 Shell Mileage Marathon competition. The judges voted the college's entry in the single seater section of the competition, which is judged on fuel efficiency, as the fourth best in Australia. The car, powered by a heavily modified Honda motorbike 50cc engine, clocked 877.5 miles per gallon or 331 kilometres per litre of fuel and according to RSC teacher Laurie Bradford, the result was extraordinary. The marathon is held every year at Sydney's Amaroo Park raceway. There were 23 competitors, which included cars from several educational institutions in different Australian states. Work on Ringwood Secondary College's building development got off to a muddy start this month. Assistant principal Gerry Robinson said 29 portable classrooms were relocated in stage one of the development, but a day of rain in the middle of the move created a morass of mud, making them temporarily unusable. The college will launch a major appeal to raise $1 million by the year 2000 so it can start works not covered by the Department of Education funding of its master plan

Three former Ringwood Secondary College students who finished among the elite in this year's VCE results will soon move a step closer to their chosen careers. The three, Laine Nesbit, her sister Cicily and Tristan Luduwyk will begin tertiary studies at the end of the month. Tristan's TER score of 99.3 was good enough to get him accepted for a double degree in computer systems engineering and computer sciences. He has deferred the computer courses to study trumpet improvisation at the Victorian College of the Arts. Laine, with a score of 95.7 entered the Occupational Therapy course at Latrobe University. Cicily will begin a 6 year degree in medicine at Monash University. All three served as prefects during their final year at Ringwood Secondary College.

Ringwood Secondary College prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary, with current students and ones from its early days, including mothers and their daughters. Felt hats, gloves and box-pleated skirts were all part of Sylvia Harbour's school uniform in 1961 when she attended Ringwood High School (now college). Sylvia joined her daughter Lani who is in year 9, and several other former students, to remember the good old days. Urging students to work hard at school, Sylvia said it was more competitive for students today. "When we left school you could virtually walk into a job, but not today; it is much harder for students".

This month (June 1995), seven year 11 students will visit their sister school, Montfort High School in Chiang Mai, Thailand's second largest city. Another seven year 10, 11 and 12 students will spend three weeks in Japan attending Yatsushiro Higachi High School. Geography teacher, Sandy Young, who will accompany the students to Thailand said the itinerary included an elephant ride, a visit to the Golden Triangle and the hill tribes and three days in Bangkok touring the Grand Palace and the canals. Laurie Bradford, who will accompany the students on a three-week trip to Japan, said they would be billeted with families."We will have two weeks with traditional Japanese families and will spen four to five days touring the Japanese islands". Mr Bradford said that Ringwood Secondary College was going through the formalities of becoming a sister school with Yatsushiro Higachi High School.

About 130 Ringwood Secondary College students converged on Ringwood Lake last week for the running of the seventh annual lakeside gift. The three km race arouind the lake is part of the pre-season athletics training for the interschool sports which begins in several weeks.
