The house was built by William Richardson who went to live at Rhyll in 1876. His father, Joseph, owned the land. Joseph had arrived on Phillip Island in 1868 when the first land sale took place. January 1869 at the first land sale in Cowes, John West bought Lot 1 for £45 . In the 1870's he built the first Chicory Kiln on Phillip Island. With his brother, Solomon, he started the General Store next to the Chicory Kiln in Thompson Avenue. This was Arnie Brown's house in the main street of Cowes. Arnie lived at Hastings, but came to live on Phillip Island in 1908. One of the best known boatman - he provided fishing trips for visitors. He died in the autumn of 1952 from an accident when tying up at Cowes Jetty. He had numerous fishing boats.Old house in Thompson Avenue, Cowes. Originally The Warley Hospital built by Robert Walpole in 1908 and moved to its present site in Genista Street, when the present hospital building was erected c 1967. Now owned by Mr Reith. In 1923 Mr & Mrs W E Thompson purchased the property of the late Robert Walpole and presented it to the people of Phillip Island for a hospital.Early house built by Robert Walpole. This is a collection of 12 coloured photographs of the Warley Hospital and Nursing home donated by Meg Davis. In 1923 the Warley Hospital was established in a house purchased by Mr Thompson. The new hospital was built in 1962 and the Nursing Home Annex was added in the mid 1970's. Robert Anderson and wife migrated to Australia in 1856 and moved to Phillip Island about 1870 - 71. His descendants are tabulated with some brief history of them. On one Family Tree it has that Robert Coxon Anderson married Margaret Sharpe in 1855 then Bessy Flemming after Margaret died. In another Family Tree the 2nd wife is noted as Annie Grant marrying Robert in 1891.
