black and white photograph, second half 19th century
The Richardson family was one of the very early settler families to establish themselves in the Orbost district. Samuel Richardson was a sawmiller and farmer in Orbost. He built The Curlip, a wooden paddle-steamer of 9 tons gross and dimensions of 43 feet long, 10 feet wide and a depth of 3 feet, on the slipway at their Tabarra sawmill in 1890. The Ballarat Horticultural Society was established in 1859 by a group of thirteen men with the aim of establishing an association for all lovers of horticulture. There were many such societies throughout the colonies making a contribution to their communities.Samuel Richardson, with his family, was a very early settler in the Orbost / Marlo district. Book, The ruby reference Bible, Late 19th century
This book belonged to John B. Murray and he gave it to Miss Jessie Sandison on their wedding day. It appears that they lived in Scotland. The handwritten family information reveals that George Sinclair married Janet Swanson in 1825 and one daughter, Ann, married George Sandison in 1859. Their child, Jessie Sandison, was born in 1865 and married John B. Murray on 19th April 1888. The births of four Murray children are recorded in the Bible – Annie, John, George and Maggie. The husband, John B. Murray, died in 1916 and Jessie died in 1925. This Bible is both of antiquarian interest and also of interest regarding the connection with the Sandison/ Murray families. But so far there is nothing to link these families with the Warrnambool area. So the item at this stage remains useful only for display. This is a black leather-covered book. The cover is extended at the edges to partially enclose the pages which are gilt-edged. The cover has embossed decorative patterns and the spine has gold lettering. The cover is stained and torn in places and the inscription pages and two others are loose. The inscriptions have been handwritten in black ink and there are two stamps with the name, ‘J.B. Murray’. One page lists the Murray/Sandison family tree information. ‘J.B. Murray’ ‘To Miss Jessie Grandison 19/4/88’ john b. murray, jessie sandison, warrnambool hitory -

Administrative record - Note book
This note book contains details of the men who worked, mainly as casual labourers, at the farm Boughton at Cassady's Bridge near Warrnambool. The dates are from 1859 to 1872. The names of the workers and their wages and transactions have been recorded by either William Cassady or a foreman. The entries are notable for the original creative spelling and the lack of information on the names of the workers, often referred to by their first name or a nick name. William Cassady (1824-1885) purchased Boughton in 1846 and he and his wife, Elizabeth had fourteen children. This note book is of considerable significance because it is an early record of the property Boughton and its workersThis is a note book with a metal fastener, and a cloth cover with a green mottled pattern inside. The pages have printed red lines and black hand writing. The cover is stained and partly detached from the binding.william cassady, boughton, cassady's bridge -

The foundation stone for the Cairns Memorial Church in East Melbourne was laid on 20 November 1882, and construction began in 1883 to a design produced by architects Reed, Henderson and Smart of Melbourne. The church was named in memory of the Rev. Dr. Adam Cairns (1802-1881), late pastor of Chalmers Church on Eastern Hill. Cairns was born in Scotland and ministered there until coming to Melbourne in 1853, where he served as a minister until 1876. The church in East Melbourne was intended to accommodate those who had seceded from Chalmers Church and formed themselves into a new charge. The original design for 'a handsome and commodious edifice in the early English Gothic style capable of seating 750 persons' was described and illustrated in The Australasian Sketcher (January 1883). The interior was to be octagonal in form, with the organ and choir placed in the southern transept. The first portion of the church was opened in November 1883, but was soon found, under the popular ministry of the Rev. G.D. Buchanan, to be too small for the congregation. A new design by the architects Twentyman and Askew was developed, and the first part of the redesigned building was opened on 5 October 1884. The completed building was opened on 17 April 1887. Built from Barrabool Hills stone with Waurn Ponds freestone dressings, it consisted of a nave and transepts, with raking floor, a substantial undercroft and the base of an incomplete tower and spire to the north-west. The church was gutted by fire in August 1988 and was subsequently redeveloped as an apartment complex. The congregation of Cairns Memorial now worships at Richmond-Collingwood, or at St. Michael's Collins Street. Register, Survey & subdivision street index, 1930s
This is a book with the City of Warrnambool surveys and subdivisions listed under the street names. It covers the period from 1938 to 1975. The information is listed under the headings of plan number, street name, section, allotment, date and remarks. The information contained therein would now be held as electronic data in the Council Records Department. Warrnambool, founded in 1847, became a municipality in 1856, a Borough in 1863, a Town in 1883 and a City in 1918. This book is of considerable interest because it lists Warrnambool streets from 1938 to 1975 and gives details of the subdivisions and surveys during that time. It will be very useful for researchers. This is a foolscap-size hard-cover book with a red cover with a mottled-blue pattern paper inside the covers. It has 95 pages with ruled red and blue lines. It has a handwritten alphabet index throughout the pages. The contents are handwritten in blue, green and black ink. The inside binding has been mended with adhesive tape and one page is loose. The book lists subdivisions in the City of Warrnambool under the heading of the street names and covers 1938 to 1975. The cover is somewhat grubby.Front Cover (in plastic tape): ‘Survey and Subdivision. Street Index’warrnambool city council, warrnambool streets and subdivisions -

Photo depicts Cordillo Downs Shearing Shed, located 176kms north of Innaminka. Donated by Gwen Cox (Hon. Staff Member). Once the largest sheep station in the world, the shearing shed had 120 stands. The wool clip had to be carted 600km down the track to the rail head at Farina by camel train. In 1883, a complete scouring plant was installed at "Cordillo". The region now (1989) carries cattle.shearing sheds, photographs, cordillo downs -
