The Laister-Kauffman 10A (LK10A) is a 2 seat a military training glider developed from a successful Jack Laister single seat glider called Yankee Doodle that first flew in 1938 and was exhibited at the Paris Air Show of 1939. The two seater variation was ordered in 1941 by the US Army for training glider pilots of troop carrying gliders. The military designation was XTG-4. The LK 10A glider was a simpler, more robust design than Yankee Doodle. A longer canopy enclosed both seating positions. The top of the fuselage formed a straight ridge from the top of the canopy to the point where the fin – rudder connected. Also, the design was simplified by adopting straight spar wings of 15.2 metres in place of gull wings of 14.170 metres. During the war years 156 LK10As were produced before the contracts to supply the US Army were terminated. Many of these were later sold as surplus. The Museum’s exhibit (serial number 122) was built in 1943. It was imported into Australia in the 1950s by Ric New, a member of the Gliding Club of Western Australia. Ric New modified the glider by “flat topping” the fuselage and making other aerodynamic changes. This kind of modification of the LK10A was a well tried strategy in United States for extracting better performance from the glider. It is understood that the reduction in weight and cleaner aerodynamics from the changes could increase the glide ratio from 1:24 to something like 1:30. The LK10A was located at the Gliding Club of Western Australia for many years. Records reveal that it was kept airworthy until about 1975. The LK10A is an important acquisition in that it allows one to compare the state of two seat glider design in United States and the United Kingdom in the immediate post war period. It is interesting to note that at that time a number of clubs in Australia who acquired a two seat glider for training chose the United Kingdom open cockpit high strutted wing offerings from Slingsby (e.g. T31) instead of more innovative military surplus gliders from America. Photo of Bluey Truscott. Squadron Leader Keith William (Bluey) Truscott was regarded as one of Australia’s most well known WW2 fighter pilot aces. He was born on the 17/5/1916 and died over Exmouth, Western Australia on 28/3/1943 in an Aircraft accident whilst on duty. He initially trained under the Commonwealth Empire Training Scheme In Canada at the beginning of WW2, and later on was posted to Number 452 Squadron England where he flew Spitfires over Europe. He was awarded the distinguished Flying Cross in 1941 for his Air action and bravery. In 1942 he was further awarded the DFC Bar for further outstanding Air action and bravery. He returned to Australia and commanded number 76 Squadron who undertook duties in Papua New Guinea, specifically Milne Bay. When with 76 Squadron they largely flew Kittyhawks. There is a club named after SQN LDR Truscott, called the Truscott Club, at Airforce Base Darwin. There is also a decommissioned WW2 Airfield in the Kimberley’s called after him ( Truscott Air Base). Truscott has more recently been called Mungalu-Truscott Air Base as it is now owned by the traditional people of the Wunambal Gaambera. The Airfield is now used for commercial and private flying and is heritage listed under the National Trust of Australia (W.A.) due to its historical significance relating to WW2 and the remaining artefacts that are still in place presently. WADE, Ivan Mayor 1969-70, 1970-71 Ivan Wade grew up in Bendigo and Brunswick, one of eight children. After his marriage, he moved with his wife and young family to Kew in 1951. In 1959, he took a year’s sabbatical in 1959 to build a new family home for his wife and four children at 222 Cotham Road, Kew. He worked professionally in the Meat Industry, successfully building a small chain of retail butcher shops, and a meat exporting business. He worked for improvements in the Trade through involvement in the Meat and Allied Trades Federation, of which he was the first State, and then Federal President. He was to be awarded an OBE for his services to the Meat Industry in 1979. Having been a long-time member of Melbourne Lions Club, he helped start Chadstone Lions’ Club as an inaugural tenant of the Chadstone Shopping Centre in 1979. He was also a tireless worker for charity, making his home available for functions raising funds for local groups. His passion for the community led him to stand for Kew Council as a representative of College Ward. As a councillor, he was elected mayor for two terms. During his term of office, new Kew Municipal Offices were constructed in Cotham Road. An active worker for the Kew Elder Citizens Association, he was involved in the establishment of an Opportunity Shop in Walpole Street to raise funds for the development of a new Centre in High Street. The Opportunity Shop was used to train locally unemployed youth skills such as furniture repair. The silver trowel was presented in a black leather case lined with blue velvet. The trowel was to be used a second time in 1982 when Cr Wade and his wife laid the foundation stone of Hamer Court. After the first world war there was a decision made to create a memorial. Legatees were involved in the process at various times and capacities. In particular Legatee Kemsley was vocal in idea of a structure over a utilitarian memorial (such as a hospital or a park) - see letter at 01182. These notes include the resolution that passed at the Melbourne Town Hall at a public meeting: "That this meeting of citizens confirm the launching of an appeal by the Lord Mayor to establish a National War Memorial by means of a monument and that an executive committee with the Lord Mayor as Chairman with power to add and point sub-committees be formed to carry out the project." Also that 20 sites were selected for consideration in 1921. Although the St Kilda Road site was favoured early on, by 1926 there was pressure to change to a "provision of square" and Cenotaph at the intersection of Spring and Bourke Streets. Legacy Clubs voiced their opposition to this proposal by passing a resolution "That the Melbourne Legacy Club, representative of the returned soldiers in business in this city, whilst welcoming the Anzac Square Scheme as a city improvement, cannot support it as a War Memorial scheme and affirms its support for the Shrine of Remembrance in the Domain as the only War Memorial worthy of Victoria's unparalleled efforts in the Great War." The document was in an envelope with a letter dated 30 April 1971 (01182) that also outlines the efforts Legacy (especially L/- Kemsley) went through to promote the construction of the Shrine of Remembrance over a proposed square. The envelope says 'The Origin of the Shinre of Remembrance p/p Legatees Kemsley and Joynt'. And the initial 'JMBA'?. The article suggested that war memorials were better to be utilitarian, such as hospitals, parks and community centres. A photocopy of an article in the 'Victorian Historical Magazine', 149th Issue August 1967. It was an account of a speech by Legatee Ian Anderson to the Historical Society on 23 May 1967. Legatee Anderson was president of Melbourne Legacy Club in 1964. This is a very good quality account of details of Legacy up to the 1960s. The article outlines the key figures and events in the creation of Legacy in 1923. He mentions 8 of the members at the founding meeting in September 1923 were from the 24th Battalion. The name 'Legacy' was suggested by L/ Frank Selleck. Also the first two years of Legacy focused on the rehabilitation of returned servicemen and finding them work. It was L/ Frank Doolan that proposed the 'real field for the movement's work lay in the care, guidance and encouragement of the families of those comrades who, through death, were themselves no longer there to give those benefits, and that as the children of deceased ex-servicemen were growing up, the cases were increasing in which some deputy was needed to take up among them the work for their deceased fathers, and to act virtually as a guardian or sponsor with the help and advice our dead comrade would have given.' It mentions the Central Liaison Committee, the Co-ordinating Council, the dates of the formation of other clubs, the Code of Legacy, the residences, the annual demonstrations, also the camps and classes provided for children. He quotes L/ Stan Savige in a speech to the Annual Conference in 1950 and also part of the speech given to farewell L/ Savige after his death. The notation H51 in blue pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A document written in 1973 with a summary of the first few years of Legacy. It relates the story of Legatee Stan Savige being inspired by Major General Sir Gellibrand to start a club in Melbourne with the broad objective to help the further the interests of ex-servicemen (by business reciprocity). Stan Savige had 'within a few weeks had gathered a small band of ex-servicemen, mostly from his old Brigade, and on 25th September 1923 a Club of about 50 members was established in Melbourne. It was given the name of 'Legacy' and its members in due course came to be known as 'Legatees'. ' Two years later the focus changed to the families of departed comrades. In September 1925 'a quiet and experienced Legatee pointed to the Families, now two years older, of their comrades who had not come home, the name and destiny of Legacy, hitherto not fully grasped and with its inner significance of Challenge, Trust and Responsibility, flashed for the first time into full and clear focus and Legacy had, in that realisation, found both its goal and its Soul.' The document is not signed but a file reference on the bottom is 'JHBA:WF 16.1.73" and the note from the Public Relations Committee indicates the author as being Legatee JHB Amstrong (Brian). The note from the Public Relations Committee mentions 'Fifty Years On' and 'In the beginning', both written by Legatee Armstrong were a fine contribution to the Annual Report in 1973, and were being sent to the printers. (Fifty Years On is at 01506). The notation H31 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. James “Jinger” Trewartha was a well known cricketer in the Bendigo District Cricket Association in the 1890s, playing for the Long Gully Cricket Club. James was born in 1871 in Sandhurst to Abraham and Sarah (nee Traverton) Trewartha. He was the second eldest son with seven brothers and five sisters. In the late 1880s the family moved to Milroy Street, Ironbark. James and his brother Albert played in the BDCA premiership teams of 1896/97, 1897/98, 1898/99, 1900/01, 1901/02. Long Gully Cricket Club 1894 – 95. Long Gully joined the BDCA. James Trewartha was first recorded playing in the BDCA. He took an outstanding 8 wickets for 10 runs in one match. 1897 – 98 Trewartha played in a Bendigo XVIII against an England XI. Trewartha won the BDCA Bowling Average. 1898 – 99 Trewartha won the BDCA Bowling Average. At the 1899 annual banquet of the L.G.C.C., James Trewartha was presented with a gold watch and chain, subscribed for by the District’s cricketers. (10866.1) 1901 – 02 Trewartha won the BDCA Bowling Average. 1903 – 04 Last record of Trewartha playing in the BDCA. 1904 – 05 Long Gully left the BDCA. James Trewartha never married. He moved to South Melbourne in 1910 to live with his mother and sister Mary Ann (Polly) Angwin. James Trewartha died on 9 September 1926 when hit by a train. He is buried in Fawkner Cemetery. (III) A black exercise book titled 'Golden Square Patriotic League.' Contains the minutes of meetings held between November 26th, 1917 and August 5th, 1918. Also includes the 'Annual Report p resented at Public Meeting held August 15th, 1918 and presented by President Lydia Pethard, Hon. Sec. (IV) A black exercise book labelled 'Wilsons' Reed Branch 2nd Infantry Comforts Fund. Mrs. Geo Goulden. It contains information relevant to the members and is dated 26/7/17 to 28/12/18 and 3/8/17 to 13/12/18. In the centre of the book is a list of donations. (V) A black exercise book titled 'Red Cross Golden Square.' Contains meetings held from June 30th, 1915 to October 29th., 1917. (VI) A small black notebook titled 'Carnival Returns July 21st 1917.' Cyril and Joyce Hayward migrated from England in 1955 and quickly became involved in the Arts in Warrnambool. They both became life members of the Warrnambool Theatre Company. Mrs. Joyce Hayward along with her husband Cyril, had a 30 year association with the Warrnambool Theatre Company. They acted, directed and produced a number of works from the 1950’s through to the 1980’s. Mrs. Hayward taught drama and speech at Warrnambool High School and St Ann’s College. They both worked towards reviving the Warrnambool Arts Council.. They were involved in Christ Church choir, readings for the blind, Probus and Penguin club. They retired to Bribie Island in 1985. Joyce Hayward died aged 97 in 2007.Joyce and Cyril Hayward played a significant part in the development of the Performing Arts and Education in Warrnambool over a 30 year period. They both received the Warrnambool Citizenship award. This letter expresses the gratitude of Council and citizens of Warrnambool to the Haywards for their contribution. The Procession of floats travelled from the Eltham Shopping Centre to Eltham Lower Park on Saturday 10th April as part of the Shire of Eltham centenary celebrations program. A steam Roller and diesel roller. One of a series of three photgraphs. Participants in the parade included the Eltham Film Society, Scout group, Eltham volunteer fire brigade, riders on horses and horse and carts. A cowley roller from the Melbourne Steam traction engine club and a McDonald roller represented Eltham Shire Council in the 19th and 20th centuries. Another float includes a bark hut with trailer representing pioneers with a banner reading "The trues heroes our pioneers". Eltham Village is under construction by H.M. Keast & Sons, Master Builders. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). A tankard mug that was produced for Legacy to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. It is unknown how many of these mugs were made. It is unlikely they were for fundraising. Perhaps just for Legatees to keep. Also found reference to it in a newspaper article published 7 December 1953. The article mentions: Two hundred members and visitors who attended the 30th annual dinner of the Legacy Club in Union House on Saturday night received a pleasant surprise. Each person at the dinner was given a Coronation pint tankard with a figure of the Queen's head on it. The 'surprise' came from a Legatee - Mr H Greenway - a Blackburn pottery manufacturer. Undated list of personally owned furnishings at Holmbush found in a file next to letters dated 1943. The piano, musical cabinet, card tables, fire fender and fire irons, wireless, and kerosene refrigerator give an indication of how homes were furnished at the time. Mr Bert Frank was appointed to the role of manager of the Legacy Club Hostel in March 1943 (see 00355.1) and details of his application for the role is also in the archive at 00351. As were the times the wife of the successful applicant was automatically assumed to be working as well but without the acknowledgement of a hired position. As it was a live-in position perhaps this list recorded their personal contents to avoid disputes later on. While the first train arrived at Beech Forest on 17 February, 1902, as a special train for a race meeting at Beech Forest Turf Club, two special trains ran for the official opening of the railway by the State Governor, Sir George Sydenham Clarke, KCMG, R.E., F.R.S., that took place on 27 February, 1902. After seeing round the area the guests attended a celebration of the opening at a banquet at Beech Forest. The menu included four impressive courses, coffee and cognac, and included a number of toasts - The King, the Governor, the Minister and the Parliament of the State, Success to the Beech Forest Railway, the Colac Shire Council and the Railway Trust, and the Railway Department, a total of 19 people speaking. Edgar Gordon Morris was a prominent sportsman in Bacchus Marsh from around 1909 to 1918. He was regarded as the best all-round cricketer in the district and was also Secretary of the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. He was also a playing member of local football and tennis clubs. From about 1919 to 1921 Morris had been living in Swan Hill. His death at the age of 35 was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 5th March 1921 and was received with great sadness in sporting circles in Bacchus Marsh and district. To perpetuate his memory a shield to be presented to the premiership team each season in the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. The E.G. MOrris Shield was first presented for the 1921-1922 season.This item is of historical significance because it is associated with a particular person, Edgar Morris, a prominent sportsman and sports administrator in the Bacchus Marsh area. It is of comparative significance because it is representative of a shield design for a perpetual sporting trophy. The Shield also provides some research value by preserving and commemorating the memory of a prominent individual sports person in the Bacchus Marsh area.A silver plated shield created to perpetuate the memory of E. G. Morris. Enclosed inside a timber frame and sealed with a glass top. The shield is ringed by smaller shields with inscriptions identifying the premiership winning teams in the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association between 1921 and 1930.The E. G. Programme of the first Legacy Demonstration at the Melbourne Town Hall on 28th March 1928. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Demonstration arranged by the Chairman of the Gymnasium Sub-Committee (Legatee Aaron Beattie) in conjunction with Mrs Gilles (Hon.
