William Dunbar Johnston was appointed sub-inspector of police in Meredith. He had a major drinking problem. He and another trooper were taking prisoners from Buninyong to Meredith but failed to realise their "loss' until they reached Meredith. Frederick Lloyd Carleton VX1555 served in the 2/23rd Battalion, 9th Division in the Middle East and in the Pacific. The images detail his day to day life at the front and on leave. He served during the siege of Tobruk and at El Alamein, and was a lifelong member of the Bendigo sub-branch of the Rats of Tobruk Association. This book contains the names of those on the 1939 electoral roll for Wannon in Victoria. It is an original Federal electorate and was established in 1901. It has had some changes of boundaries over the years. The sub-divisions in the Wannon electorate in 1939 included Branxholme, Casterton, Dimboola, Hamilton, Harrow, Horsham, Horsham South, Jeparit, Koroit, Nhill, Port Fairy, Portland, Stawell and Warrnambool. This book, although tattered and incomplete is a useful one as it has the names of all those on the electoral roll in the Wannon electorate in 1939 and this includes the Warrnambool area. Black and white negative, by Wal Jack, of S 157 in Gordon St (possibly near Monash St.) Tram has the "Special E" destination indicating it was on an Explosive factory working. Note the CGA (Commonwealth Government of Australia) sub-station for the works on the other side of the road. There is a high voltage power line in the background and behind the substation. Held by Montmorency/Eltham sub branch for some time; background details uncertain. Likely donated by by family member. Owner was Leslie 'Rocky' Walton (b. 9 Jun 1921) who enlisted at Casino (NSW) on 2 Aug 1942, living at East Preston at the time. He was discharged on 15 April 1946 while posted to 2/43 Aust. Inf. Bn.The kitbag consists of a long, brown, canvas cylinder closed at the bottom. The top has an internal canvas flap and eight brass grommets to allow a drawstring type rope (fitted on this item) to securely close the bag. A metal D-shaped hinged clasp (see photo; 13 cm x 8 cm) to enable fitting of a padlock. A canvas loop (see photo) is sewn to bottom edge of bag to enable rope to be passed through for bag to be slung on shoulder. The Gunning family owned 20 acres of orchard and farm land in High Street Lower Templestowe and kept one of these kits in each vehicle and tractor. They didn't experience a snake problem until the late 1950's when land sub division around their property forced snakes into the area. The family lost one dog to snake bite in the early 1960's.Consists of a Wallet, tourniquet and lancet . 1.Wallet - small red plastic wallet with one press stud to close.
