A book of photos that records the activities of the dependents with disabilities group during Legacy's Somers Camp in 2013. It is full of photos without captions but the enjoyment of the participants is clear. Part of the introduction says: "Our sixty dependants enjoyed 12 days in each others company supported by a team of generous volunteers. Melbourne Legacy's support of or Dependants with Disabilities represents a very important part of the work which Legacy does. Our widows are reassured in the knowledge that their children will have support throughout their lives from a caring and concerned organisation." Most junior legatees are helped until they reach 18 years of age. However, the group of disabled dependents are helped for their whole life. Which gives peace of mind to the family that Legacy will always be there to care. A photo of Anzac Day in London in 1956 from a Comradeship photo album. It identifies Sir Thomas White at the East door of Westminster Abbey after the service. The caption says Sir Thomas White was the 3rd President of Melbourne Legacy. He had also been the Australian High Commissioner in Britain until 1956, so he was soon to return to Australia. A menu card at 01298 shows that Group Captain White was given a farewell dinner when he left Australia for the post in London and it was attended by many legatees.A record that Legatees often held prominent positions such as High Commissioner of Britain. The Comradeship photo album was put together by the Comradeship committee and records events that Legatees did and places they lived or visited. Some appear to be trips to visit other Legatees living overseas and social occasions held in different places. Celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of Legacy were held in the grounds of Government House in 2003. These photos show the Melbourne skyline in 2003 and views across MCG and the sports precinct. The note with the photos says: "Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function Over 1200 people recently attended Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function. The sun streaming through the picturesque garden surroundings at Government House contributed to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching up with friends and acquaintances that go back a long way. Some had not seen each other for decades and there was much excitement renewing old friendships. A black and white photo of junior legatees at Somers camp, probably in the 1930s. Names on the reverse say Les Mitchell and Roy Gilbert. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. A cutting from from a Melbourne Legacy President's report showing a photo of Legatee Bruce Wilson (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1987). It was collected to be a record of a photo of past presidents. Also a black and white photo of him. Also a draft of the information. It says that Legatee Wilson was inducted as president on 11 December 1986 which is unusual, Presidents normally served from March to the following March. During World War 2 Bruce served as a pilot with the RAAF. He was posted to 33 Squadron which operated in the South West Pacific area. He joined Sydney Legacy in 1962 and transferred to Melbourne in 1966. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. Widows beside trading tables of craft items and food at Legacy House. It could have been an annual fete run by the widows. Names unknown except for Elaine Ward who is seated in a red jacket in the third photo. There is a laundry basket as a hamper, perhaps for a raffle prize. The baked items have as sign "With compliments of Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse" so the items may have been donated for sale. A poster on the wall is of Daryl Somers and says "Hey Hey its Legacy Day" so it was either 1996 or 1997 when Legacy invited Daryl Somers to be Personality of the Year in 1996 and again in 1997. A portrait of Legatee Arthur Henson Smith who was a legatee that had rejoined to serve in the second World War. His ribbon bar indicates he had served in the first World War. His Vale notice that appeared in the Bulletin on 22 January 1973 says he had landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He went on to serve with the 2nd Brigade AFA and the 3rd Army Brigade Artillery. On 1 May 1940 he enlisted with the 2/9 Field Regiment of the 2nd AIF with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and served in Syria and the Middle East. Arthur Smith was inducted into Legacy in 1935 and served on many committees, until he reluctantly was put on reserve list in 1965 due to illness. He died in 1973. From NAA.gov.au Edward Thomas Tronson Scott joined on 6 March 1918 to serve in World War One, he was enroute on a troop ship when Armistice occurred and then ship returned to Australia. He caught influenza and was hospitalised for several months before being discharged. His records from the DVA show he enlisted 13 July 1940 and attained the rank of Major (service number VX46714), his posting at discharge was AASC Vic L of C Area. The portrait was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). A photo from a newsletter from September 1953. The photo shows the Footscray boys receiving certificates and badges from the President of Legacy, Legatee S Nevile. The article says the group offers boys the chance of forming lasting friendships with other Junior Legatees, and evening of healthful exercise, games, basketball, etc under the guidance of a fully qualified and capable physical education instructor. Gymnasium kit and free milk are provided for each boy and during the year other interests are available, such as picture nights, pie nights, Christmas parties and outing to Luna Park etc. The Footscray Class was in the Drill Hall, at the corner of Barkly and Gordon Streets Footscray at 7.30 on Friday nights. Peta Clancy is a descendent of the Bangerang people from South-Eastern Australia. She explores hidden histories of colonisation in Australia. Through manipulating photographic prints, she reconstructs these hidden histories in a contemporary setting. In 2018, Clancy was awarded the inaugural Fostering Koorie Art and Culture grant from the Koorie Heritage Trust. The grant enabled her to collaborate with the Dja Dja Wurrung community to create a body of work investigating massacre sites on Dja Dja Wurrung country. The exhibition Undercurrent at the Koorie Heritage Trust focussed on a massacre site submerged under water. Clancy says of the exhibition and this work: ‘I explored this site as a metaphor for the hidden history of many massacres throughout Australia and the denial of this aspect of our history and the trauma these sites evoke’.

The Australian Historical Records Society existed in Ballarat between 1896 and 1906. They were one of Australia's first historical societies, and were in the position to still be able to talk to early pioneers. They invited such pioneers to either submit letters or memoirs, or to address the Society's meetings, where their reminiscences were taken down in shorthand and later typed up. The Society also attempted to preserve memorabilia from Ballarat's early days, but on the disbanding of the group in 1906, materials were stored at the Ballarat Town Hall and were later lost. It is not known how the papers made their way to the then Ballarat Municipal Library, but they have been part of the Library's collection for many years.Mr. James McCain Meek boasted of building the first house in Ballarat, on the corner of Dana and Lydiard Streets, which was also a lemonade store and some say a sly grog shop. Meek arrived in Australia in 1847. He was in Ballarat 1851-1853, and in later life he returned to Ballarat to live at the Benevolent Asylum. When he became very ill in 1898 his daughter Marianne Dallimore took him to live with her, and he died at her property near Warrnambool in 1899. He wrote these reminiscences for the AHRS, of which he was a member. He was an excellent penman and illustrator and he produced several extraordinary complicated works. Set of seven Kodak white cardboard 35mm colour slides by Len Millar of the move of former VR tram No. 34 from Yarrambat to the TMSV site at Bylands on 18/4/1974. Reference June 1974 issue of Trolley Wire. Note the Brill 77E trucks i the background were obtained at the same time. These would have been 5'3" gauge and it would appear that the tram was placed on a set of MMTB No. 1 trucks. Len Millar advised 21-7-2021 - that Trolley Wire says that the tram was obtained from a private property on the banks of thee Plenty River at Yarrambat, It was perched on a steep slope only 50 metres from the house, but two kilometres in from the nearest road. A photo of 6 boys with a trolley of suitcases at Spencer Street Railway Station, Melbourne (since renamed Southern Cross Station). They have arrived from country towns to attend Legacy Somers Camp in January 1973. It came from an envelope with other camp photos. The Legacy envelope was marked "P6 Junior Legatee Camps and Hols" in red pen, and dated Jan 1977 in pencil. The envelope contents are items 00418 to 00425. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. One of a series of four boards of mounted replica medals of the Australian Defence Forces. This board shows medals pertaining to World War 2. Replicas include different campaign stars and the Defence Medal and Active Service Medal. There is a cloth patch embroidered 'H.M.A.S.' and cap band from HMAS Sydney. The Rising Sun badge and badges for Return from Active Service and a RAAF emblem. The text reproduced at the base accompanied the WW1 memorial plaques. During World War 1 the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1 was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave and attend the service on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. He was featured in the widows' newsletter The Answer many times and his death was announced in The Answer in April 1997, he was 85. Many of the photos he provided were labelled as coming from Mr R G Neil, Photographic historian from Harefield. Documents relate to aspects of Legacy committees from as early as 1923 to 1950. In the original archive project these documents were put together. The card (two copies) is a promotion of the Deceased Soldiers Children Welfare Committee. It is asking the Legatees where they would like to help - for instance the Junior Boys Club, the holiday camp, Big Brothers for deceased comrades sons, or with vocational placements. This shows that the legatees were being reminded of their obligation to Legacy. It also captures the part of the poem 'In Flanders Field' that relates to the Torch and a quote about Legacy's work. It is from approximately 1927. A letter dated 1966, that accompanies these cards is from Frank Doolan and it claims that this might the sole surviving example of the brochure. He says it is an 'early Legacy story' that is now nearly 40 years old. It also says : 'In those days Literary and debating amongst boys was an important part of our weekly Boys Class, under Jim Gillespie, Alan Murray, Harold Peters and Co, and we turned out some remarkable boys including Ted Kennedy, Graham Billiet, Jack Covue and Jim McGregor, and entered several of them at Ballarat South Street in this year of 1928, which was also the year of the first demonstration in the Melbourne Town Hall.' Another letter is to Legatee Joynt from Legatee J Barnes dated 18th November 1938, it mentions that the recent Clothing Committee meeting had decided it was better to approach Legatee wives directly to get donations of clothing for the junior legatees, by ringing them. It was attached to a report on the meeting of the Clothing Committee from 11 November 1938. A third letter is a a cover letter to the Chairman of Legacy (W E Orr) attached to the resolutions made at the Welfare Sub Committee meeting on 29 August 1950. The pilot is more than likely Flt Lieut. Jim Nixon with his Spad aircraft during WW1. James Harold Claude Nixon was born 12/12/1890 and before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force was an auctioneer at Delegate. After training at Aldershot for the Royal Flying Corps he was granted an Aviators Certificate (No. 4607) by the Royal Aero Club. This handkerchief was used as a marketing material to promote the film titled "The Heavens are ours" in Greek by "New World Film Entertainment" shown at Melbourne Town Hall. There were 2000 of these printed by the company for the premiera showing. The film was later screened by the same company at Premier Theatre in November 1958 by popular demand. The handkerchief gesture had the desired effect of attracting large crowds to the show.This handkerchief's primary significance is derived from the innovative story behind its use. A white printed paper towel inscribed, in black ink, with a message in Greek to those it was handed to by "Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures"The inscription in Greek says: "ΦΕΡΤΕ ΤΟ ΜΑΖΥ ΣΑΣ. Θα σας χρησιμεύσει να σφουγγίσετε τα δάκρυά σας παρακολουθώντας το συγκινητικώτερο, το δραματικώτερο δράμα όλων των εποχών που θα κάνει και τις άψυχες πέτρες να ραγίσουν 'ΟΙ ΟΥΡΑΝΟΙ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΔΙΚΟΙ ΜΑΣ'...." A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. This was taken in 1982. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. It is a photo of two school children laying a wreath at the Cenotaph. They are named as two Junior Legatees, Peter Manning and either Bridget Riggs or Gayle Goulding (the two labels are contradictory). It is possible one of the labels belong to another photo (item 01200) as they were found in the same envelope and it appears to be the same boy in both photos. However both labels were attached to this photo. Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies.
