Phillip Island and District Historical Society Inc.Photograph Album, Kodak, Phillip Island Cemetery, c 1990
The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-34: Captain J. B. Lock. John Barnard Lock was associated with the trading vessels to operate from Phillip Island when the settlers had most of their goods brought from Melbourne. He died in 1908 and is laid to rest in the family grave. The grave is surrounded by metal railing and flowers. 466-35: David Charles Justice. David came to the Island in 1898. He was a blacksmith, coachbuilder, farrier, agricultural engineer, wheelmaker, shipbuilder and farmer. He purchased a farm from the Harbison Estate in 1911 in the Ventnor township. He assisted Mr Will Kennon in building a punt used to recover equipment from the wreck of the "Speke". "Dinny" as he was called, married Isabella Miller (an early settlers' family). Small white programme with scalloped edge on three sides for Progressive Euchre Party and Cinderella Dance, held at the Masonic Hall, Friday 24th Aug., 1900. Bendigo Philharmonic Society. Front card has embossed daisies and an embossed square on the front. Also the names of the Conductor, Mr. A. G. Finster; the President, His Worship the Mayor Cr. S. H. McGowan and Hon. Secretary, J. Williamson. The second card has the dance programme with the names of the dances and engagements and the names of ladies and gentlemen who contributed items during the evening. They were Miss E. The first page is a memorandum to Mr J H Seymour from the International patent & Trade Marks Office informing Mr Seymour that the Provisional Specification of his invention has been accepted in Victoria, dated 17 Oct 1892. The second page is a copy of a card from John H Seymour, City Foundry, Wattle St. Sandhurst outlining the safety cage, the lives it has saved and orders will receive prompt attention and further information may be had from the above address. Among these the glorious royal blue silk brocade gown worn by Jennifer Wyatt. the frock was brought out from England more than 110 years ago by Mrs. Jonathan Harris of Axedale (her husband was the founder of the Hustlers' line of reefs in Bendigo). Carbon copy of a certificate or a notice of the event of SEC Ballarat No. 27 reaching a million miles in service in Ballarat at 3.10pm on 29 June 1968. Gives details of the tram history and signed by Mr. L. J. Denmead, Departmental Tramways Supt., Mr. F. K. White, Branch Manager and Mr. A. N. Smith, Engineer and Manager. Typed on copy paper with a faint watermark "EURNT BANR MADE IN AUST". Was attached on donation to item 1850, with a pin in top left hand corner. Separated for storage. See image file for arrangement on donation. Note: Later review by D. Macartney in early 80's? found that the SEC had miscalculated the distance travelled by 100,000 miles.
