Tait collection: item 59 of 62. This document gives details of the Will and Probate of Frederick Gazzard of Allansford who died in September 1901. Frederick Gazzard owned the ‘Tooram’ bacon and ham curing factory at the corner of Carrolls Road and Tooram Road in the Allansford area and employed six men. He was a founding member of the Allansford Church of England and lived with his family of seven children at ‘Como’, Allansford. He left real estate to the value of £1,440 and personal estate to the value of £1,664. The beneficiaries were his children, with his household effects and £200 going to his daughter, Ellen. She is believed to have taken an active role in the administration of the family factory. This document was drawn up in the office of William Ardlie, a prominent lawyer in Warrnambool for over sixty years. It has then been passed down to successive lawyers occupying legal premises in Kepler Street until it was located in these premises in 2014. This document is of considerable interest as it gives details of the Will and Probate of Frederick Gazzard. He and his family were prominent and influential in the community life of Allansford in the 19th century. This is a cream-coloured piece of parchment paper folded in two with blue lines ruled at the edges of three of the pages. There is handwritten material (brownish-black ink) on three of the pages. A seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with green ribbon and there are six red stamps of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court and one blue stamp of the Warrnambool Savings Bank. Tait collection: item 61 of 62 This document contains details on the Release Debenture drawn up between Emile Manton and other members of her family and Herbert Frederick Manton in 1889. The mother, Caroline Manton, died in 1889 and one of the executors of her will also died the same year. The document released the remaining executor, Herbert Frederick Manton, from his legal duties as executor and finalized his carrying out of the provisions of Caroline Manton’s will. The document was drawn up by the legal firm of Oldham and Chambers in Melbourne and was in the possession of Ernest Chambers who had legal offices in Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Koroit at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The document passed down to successive lawyers occupying the legal offices in Kepler Street, Warrnambool and it was located in this building in 2014. The document is of interest only in that it was drawn up by Ernest Chambers who later had a legal practice in Warrnambool. This is a document consisting of four white pages, bound with black cord and containing handwritten material (black ink) on seven sides of the pages. The document gives details of the Release Debenture drawn up by members of the Manton family following the death of Caroline Manton of South Yarra and the provisions of her will made in 1887. The document includes two pages of the Executors Accounts and the disbursements made to beneficiaries of the will. There are four green duty stamps pasted on to one of these pages. The signature of seven of the Manton family members have small red seals attached to each signature. Clifton Banks is the name given to a bank on the Hopkins River Estuary, about one kilometre upstream from Proudfoots Boathouse. It is at the foot of the property, Clifton which dates from the 1850s. There are several works of art and photographs depicting Clifton Banks which date from the 19th and early 20th centuries. This oil painting is believed to be the work of Emma McGeorge, the wife of Canon Samuel McGeorge, the Vicar of Christ Church, Warrnambool form 1899 to 1905. It is surmised that Emma McGeorge was encouraged by the artist Mary Norman to take up painting as a pastime or to continue with her art interests. Emma McGeorge may have been a pupil of Samuel Pearce Fuller and Mary Norman. She was successful as an exhibitor and entrant in art exhibitions in Warrnambool in the early 1900s. She died in Warrnambool in 1933. This is a highly significant art work as it has artistic merit and is one of the depictions of Clifton Banks on the Hopkins River and so has historical value. It is an example of the high standard of art work that was being produced, especially by women, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Warrnambool. It was bought at an auction sale in Camperdown by Les O’Callaghan in 1997. This is an oil painting, probably by Emma McGeorge, on art board of Clifton Banks on the Hopkins River. It has a gilt wooden frame with multi-tiered highly-ornamented outer frames in a gold colouring. The lower frame is discoloured (perhaps by smoke from a fire place) and there is a small piece of wood missing on the lower frame. All the gilding is slightly discoloured. The back has been sealed with pasted paper and there are old tacks and old wire for hanging the picture. There is a label on the back from W. This slate comes from the Glasgow Estate (Ellen Isabel Glasgow died in Warrnambool in 1971). It is presumed it was used by members of the Glasgow family. Slates such as this were used by all school children in Victoria (and presumably elsewhere) in the infant and younger age classes from the early days of the State until the early 1940s. It had the advantage of the work being able to be easily erased so that other work could be written. A slate pencil was used to write on this board.This is significant firstly as an example of past educational tools used by small children and so has important social significance as every school child of past generations would have used a slate. It is also important as it belonged to the Glasgow family. John Glasgow (c.1847-1925), at his property, Blackwood Hill, Wangoom, was a prominent cheese maker in the late 19th century and was one of the first shareholders and a member of the first Board of Directors of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford. Matthew Hohner began manufacturing mouth organs in 1857 in Germany and became quite popular over the ensuing years with production reaching over 1 million units in the 1880’s. Control of the business passed to his sons around 1900. By 1920 the company was producing 20 million harmonicas a year. They sold to both sides of the conflict during the first world war. Other musical instruments were made by the company in the 20th century. Ernst Hohner retired from the firm in 1965 after 45 years at the healm. Harmonicas and mouth organs were mass produced in the later part of the 19th and into the 20th century and as such are items with which many people can identify. It has social and cultural significance. The harmonica has chrome top and bottom with wooden section in middle. During the late 1800s massage was considered effective for combating illnesses and diseases. The VeeDee massager, popular at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries claimed to be beneficial for all kinds of illnesses and complaints, including colds, digestive complaints, rheumatism, headaches, female hysteria, tumours and lung diseases. An instrument made of wood, silver and steel with a handle for turning, an end disc for massaging and a two-pronged attachment, one with a bowl containing a stiff leather ball (partly cut away). This map shows the plans by eminent harbour engineer, Sir John Coode in 1879. Construction of the breakwater commenced in 1884 and was completed in 1890. Coode first visited Australia in 1872 when he commenced work with the Melbourne Harbour Trust to report on ways to improve Melbourne Port. He is considered one of the most eminent harbour engineers of the 19th century. His original plans for Warrnambool were revised because of cost but then subsequently found to be inadequate and later extended. This was not successful either and the harbour continues to have silting problems to this day. The Warrnambool Breakwater is of historical importance to Victoria and as this map depicts the original plans, it too has great historical significance. It is also significant with its association with Sir John Coode, who was one of the most important port engineers of the 19th century. He worked to improve ports along the Victorian coast including Portland, Geelong, Port Fairy and Lakes Entrance. While this map demonstrates the engineering skills of the era, it also reflects the limitations when natural elements are involved. Its Historical importance also lies in the depiction of items on the map which relate to Warrnambool’s early history. This invitation to a ‘Conversazione’ to celebrate the Federation of the six colonies in Australia into the six States of Australia in 1901 was sent to the invitees after the event to keep as a souvenir of the occasion. The event was hosted by the Government of Victoria. The certificate was designed by George Brougham Austin, a Melbourne architect and artist employed by the Victorian Department of Public Works. He also designed many of the public decorations displayed in Melbourne during the Federation celebrations. Austin’s original work was lithographed by an artist at Sands and McDougall, Melbourne. This particular invitation was sent to George Rolfe and his wife, Annie. George Rolfe (1836-1919), a tea merchant from Melbourne, began buying blocks of land near the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool in the 1870s. By the early 1880s he owned 50 acres of land in the town and some nearby farming properties. He used the building on the ]and near the mouth of the Hopkins River as holiday accommodation and called the property, Lyndoch. He improved the property with the additions of stables, jetty, boathouse, bone and chaff sheds, reservoir and windmill and extensive gardens. Rolfe spent most of his later life at Lyndoch. Today the property is the site of an Aged Care facility. This certificate is of considerable importance for two reasons: 1. It is an important and attractive memento of a signal event in the history of Australia – the Federation of the States in 1901. 2. The certificate was an invitation to Mr and Mrs George Rolfe. George Rolfe was a prominent Warrnambool person in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a multi-coloured certificate printed on a cream-coloured card. The certificate has an image of the Exhibition Building surrounded by an ornate border of heraldic shields, portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, views of the six capital cities of Australia, native flora and fauna, the Royal Crest and the Crest of Australia. The certificate was sent to the invitees after the event as a souvenir of the occasion. This is a lady’s ticket issued by the Warrnambool Football Club in 1898. The Warrnambool Football Club, established in 1861, is one of the oldest clubs in Victoria (and the world?). It merged with South Warrnambool in 1924, was re-established as a stand-alone club in 1928 and joined the Hampden League in 1933. It still competes in this League. The secretary in 1898, William Oakley, was a well-known footballer known as ‘Wing’ and was also a co-Principal with Richard Lawson of a private boy’s school, Warrnambool College, in the late 1890s. This is a significant item as an example of a football club’s lady’s ticket in 1898 and as a 19th century memento from the Warrnambool Football Club and from William Oakley.This is a small cardboard ticket with a green background and gold lettering. Harry London, born in England, was a chemist and surgeon dentist who came to Warrnambool in 1891 and bought out the Liebig Street business of the late William Nettleton. In 1896 London erected a new chemist shop at the corner of Koroit and Liebig Streets. This shop was the first in Warrnambool to have an electric light installation (1905). This bottle is of considerable significance as it came from the chemist’s shop of Harry London, a prominent chemist in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. It also shows the type of medicine bottle prevalent at the time. Glass is a durable item and bottles such as these would have been dumped in tips or buried with other rubbish The bottle was dug up in Warrnambool so it makes it an archeological find and it also shows the possibility at any time of finding items such as this in old buildings and in garden plots and paddocks etc. This is a small glass bottle used for patent or prescription medicine and issued by a chemist. This album contains a collection of family photos, greeting cards and hand drawn floral emblems. Among the photographs are two which have details on them: a young girl named Margaret Clarke aged 8 1870 and another of Charles Alexander Clarke. The photographers are from many places including Britain, Melbourne, Portland and a number by Daniel Clarke of Warrnambool. Daniel Clarke was one of Warrnambool’s more important photographers, operating a business for thirty years in the town. He also worked as an artist and taught art in local schools. He painted a number of versions of Tower Hill. He died in 1918 at the age of 91.This album shows a collection of photographs and cards which were important to families in the later part of the 19th century. It has artistic and historical significance, with the photographs in particular depicting many different styles of clothing and household details of the time. This album contains a number of local coastal and seascapes including Thunder Point, views of local streets such as Liebig and Fairy streets, panorama views of the town from Manse Hill and Booval Hill and the Botanic Gardens. Buildings included are Cramond and Dickson, St Joseph’s Church, the saleyards. The book itself would have been used by patrons of the Western Hotel when J Fox was licensee, from 1880 until 1887. The hotel had been operating since 1870 when William O’Brien applied for a publican’s license for the house on the corner of Timor and Kepler Streets with five sitting rooms and eight bedrooms. The stone building was designed by Andrew Kerr and built by Williams & Co. The Western Hotel was also the booking office for Cobb and Co Coaches which operated until the railway came to town in 1890. This album has historical significance on different levels. Firstly the photographs provide a view of Warrnambool in the late 19th century. The photos are aesthetically and artistically significant. Many of the buildings in the streetscapes are still recognizable. Secondly the Western Hotel has occupied a prominent site within the CBD for nearly 150 years. This clock was over the door of the shop of Sambell’s pharmacy at 90 Fairy Street. John Sambell opened the Hall of Pharmacy in Fairy Street, Warrnambool about 1890. He was a chemist and dentist with previous experience in Great Britain and Victoria. His shop had been conducted by Edward Griffiths in the 1880s. By 1919 John Sambell’s son, Herbert, had joined the business, trading as Sambell and Son, though John Sambell had died in 1906. This shop was located at 151 Fairy Street. The Sambells then built new shops on the north eastern corner of Koroit and Fairy Streets and occupied the corner position. In the late 1930s the Sambell business moved to 90 Fairy Street and the business was known as Sambell, Son and Granddaughter. Herbert Sambell died in 1943. This Sambell clock had previously been at the shops of Brocks and Mainlands, both jewellers. This clock is of considerable importance as it was connected to the pharmacy business of the Sambell family, a business that was prominent in Warrnambool for many years. It is an example of the 19th and early 20th centuries practice of placing a large clock outside a business. This is a large oval clock with a gilded wooden frame and a metal face. The hour and second hands and the Roman figures are made of metal. The clock is designed to be placed on a wall or frame of some sort and to be used outside on a shop or other commercial building. This so-called Hickford medal was a medal struck in 1897 by the Town of Warrnambool (bearing Walter Hickford’s name as the Mayor at the time) to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Victoria. Walter John Hickford was Mayor of Warrnambool 1895-6-7 and President of the Committee that organized the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. A skilled decorative artist, Hickford carried out art work in many private houses, business and churches in Warrnambool. His shop in Liebig Street supplied paint materials for households, businesses and artists. Hickford Parade is named after him. The 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign was celebrated widely throughout Australia and the British Empire. This medal is one of several owned by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. It is of some importance as it shows the extent to which civic authorities and individuals in places like Warrnambool were concerned with all things British and the influence of the British monarchy in Australian affairs in the late 19th century. It also shows the importance attached at the time to the position of Mayor, with his name being inscribed on the medal.This is a medal, possibly bronze, with the logo of the Town of Warrnambool on one side and two images of Queen Victoria on the other. This little slate notebook was given by Webb Brothers to their customers as an advertising tool. The Webb Brothers Company a large manufacturing firm in Lava Street, Warrnambool, making windmills, dairying utensils, steam boilers, and oil engines. They were also engineers, brassfounders and wholesale tinsmiths and plumbers. Motor car work became a speciality in the 1920s. In 1921 they opened a branch of their business in Melbourne (Bayswater) and the name of the firm became Presha Engineering Company. This notebook is of some interest as it was provided by Webb Brothers, an important company in Warrnambool in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also an example of the advertising techniques used by business houses at that time and an interesting example of the use of a slate pencil and slate pages as a recording mechanism.This is a brown leather notebook with three pages of slate material making eight spaces for recording notes. Notes recorded in slate can be rubbed out and the space used again. The slate pencil container is on the side of the notebook but the pencil is missing. The cover is mottled with creamy-yellow lines. The pages are edged in red and there is scribble on some pages. Webb Brothers & Co. were a large manufacturing company in Lava Street, Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. They manufactured windmills, dairying utensils, steam boilers and oil engines and other items associated with plumbing, tinsmithing, engineering, brassfoundries, and, later in the 20th century, motor car work. In 1921 they opened a branch of their business in Melbourne. It is not clear for what reason Webb Brothers made this tag. It may have been a practice piece for their labelling of products or it may have been an advertising gimmick. The firm did not appear to manufacture any items for which a leather tag would be appropriate unless the tag was attached by a chain. This item is of minor interest in itself but it is an interesting adjunct to the items and information we hold on one of Warrnambool’s important industries – Webb Brothers & Co of Lava Street. This is a leather tag in the shape of a shield. It is smooth on one side and rough on the other and the shape has been roughly cut out. This 1890 document contains the will and probate papers of Benjamin Charles Jewell who died in 1889. English-born Benjamin Jewell was a Warrnambool stonemason who was the licensee of the Steam Packet Hotel (later Lady Bay Hotel) from 1883 to 1889. His executors were Christopher Beattie, a Warrnambool undertaker and James Tallent, manager of the Warrnambool Corporation Yards. Benjamin Jewell left his estate of property, household furniture and cattle to his wife, Ellen Jewell. The solicitor, Ernest Chambers, had his office in Kepler Street with Thomas Goodall, a legal clerk, managing this office. This 1891 document contains the information on the Will and Probate of John Gould, an engineer from Russells Creek. No information has been found on John Gould except that he died in October 1890 at the age of 67. The solicitor, William Ardlie was a well-known Warrnambool lawyer, commencing a practice in 1865 and continuing well into the 20th century making him at the time one of the longest-serving lawyers in the British Empire. Tait collection: item 19 of 62 This is an 1899 document giving Will and Probate details of William Cox who died in Warrnambool in March 1899. He was a farmer residing in Moore Street Warrnambool at the time of his death at the age of 83. He left real estate to the value of £425 and personal estate to the value of £412 to Gwenllian Williams who may have been his sister or niece. A Mr and Mrs Williams were also living in the Moore Street house at the time of Cox’s death. His executors were Thomas Goodall, a law clerk who managed the office of the lawyer Ernest Chambers in Warrnambool and John Ward, a pioneer settler in Warrnambool and a shopkeeper in Jamieson Street in 1899. No other details are available on William Cox. This is an interesting document as it gives details of the Will and Probate belonging to a local Warrnambool person, William Cox. The lawyer dealing with the document was Ernest Chambers who had legal offices in Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Koroit at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He was a labourer who lived at Woodford and he and his wife, Jane received much sympathy following the deaths from diphtheria of five of their children in 1866. Charlotte (3) and Elizabeth (14) died on 26th August, Robert (6) died on 27th August, Hanne (8) died on 30th August and George (15) died on 14th September. Jane Cuppage died in 1889 and Robert died in December 1903. He left real estate to the value of £240 and personal estate to the value of £5 to his daughter, Margaret Trigg. He had come with his first wife to Australia in 1852 and was a Customs Officer in Warrnambool, in charge of the signals and premises, living in Merri Street. Later after the death of his wife (they had ten children) he married Eliza McKeeman in 1870 and they lived at ‘Oakbank’ near the Warrnambool Cemetery where Oakley pursued farming interests. They had a further eight children, many of them making their mark in the business and community life of Warrnambool and further afield. Thomas Oakley left real estate to the value of £900 and personal estate to the value of £1251, with the beneficiaries being his wife, his daughters, Elizabeth and Mary Anne from his first marriage and the eight children of his second marriage.
