Yields information about a system of tram passes that were provided to the City of Ballarat Councillors in 1960 and has a strong association with the Councillors himself.Stamped brass badge or pass for free travel on the Ballarat Tramways for the year 1906. Stamped to give the words "Ballarat Electric Trams 1906" on the outer edge of the Badge and then stamped out to give the letters 'B E T" on the inside of the badge. On the top of the badge, a hole has been provided and a steel ring fitted. On the rear of the badge has the letters "CR. T. J. Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.The ‘Harvest Home Estate’ was advertised as being a subdivision in East Kew. Now, Campbell and Owen Streets on which the allotments were located are classed as being in Kew. The Estate included 11 residential allotments abutting the Outer Circle Railway line [at the end of Owen Street]. Understandably, the vendors focused on the availability of transport by tram, noting that the Estate was near the High Street tram terminus at the Harp of Erin. A small note on the subdivision advises that the Cotham Road tram was only 3 minutes away. HYAMS, Frederick 17892The ribbon has a wide central watered stripe of orange, flanked by two narrow white stripes, which are in turn flanked by two black pin-stripes, further flanked by two outer stripes of blue. The colours have no particular significance. The medal is cupro-nickel with the effigy of George V on the obverse. The reverse has an image of St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers, and a skull and cross-bones, the emblems of death. Demonstrates how the SEC used enameled signs to convey instructions to passengers and confirm the advice of the conductor.An enameled sign, with black letters and border lines on an off-white background. Sign reads "Passengers are requested to present the correct amount of Fare." Two holes on the left and right hand sides have been made to attach the sign to the tram cab. There are rust marks permeating the enamel on the front. And paint has been used on the RH side to cover chipped enamel. The Union commenced as the Australian Tramway Employees Association in 1910. Changed its name in 1934 to the "Aust Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees Association" so as to incorporate bus drivers of motor omnibuses. Became part of the Rail Transport Bus Union in 1993. See reference. Union members were issued with badges to indicate their membership. They were permitted to be worn on their uniforms. Clothing. Owners initials prominent on outside. Rectangular in shape, fine grained black leather. The leather forms an external shape, white inside a smaller watermark, black silk pouch has a silver frame and clasp to hold the required items. This is lined with a dark cream watermark silk, and has an outer section with side pocket, containing a mirror, and a smaller inner section divided into purse-like compartments. Each swection has a silver frame and clasp. A small piece of light card -red on one side, and possibly glued as a label on the otherside is the same shape as the handbag, and has printed in capital letters ''NOTE THE POINTS''. This may or may not relate to the bag. The outer leather section is slightly tapered-wider at the bottom, forming slight peaks. The top reflects these peaks, with a 3 cm wide band of leather, shaped wider at the top. 23 cm long at top, 21 cm long at lower edge. Wedding dress and veil worn by Margaret Vyner at her wedding to Ian McKendrick on 11th January 1958The McKendrick family came to Mt Beauty very early in the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme (KHES) days. Their son, Ian, worked in the Mt Beauty Post Office for 40+ years. The Vyner family were long time employees of the SECV working on the KHES and were residents of Mt Beauty. Margaret was a nurse at the Tawonga District Hospital at the Tawonga site and at the Mt Beauty site.Long soft white taffeta under-skirt. The outer is cut on the cross, made of nylon and with a train and has appliqued lace of a flower and is beaded. The sleeves are long and shear. The taffeta bodice is fitted with a featured V waistline. The sleeves are pointed (to cover over the hand) with a flower applique. There are 5 pearl buttons down the back and are fastened with loops. The side zip is metal and on the right hand side and at the top there is a hook and eye. Fob (or pocket) watches were developed in Europe in the 16th century and gained wide usage during the mid 18th century until World War 1 when the wristwatch was invented. These watches were designed to be carried in a small pocket and attached through the means of a 'fob' which could be a chain or made from a variety of materials such as leather. Their popularity peaked in the nineteenth century where they were an important part of middle and lower class society as well.This item is of social significance as fob / pocket watches were valued as an essential object in all levels of society. For some occupations, such as the railroads, it was a necessary tool of the job. Steel York Lever open face pocket / fob watch dated between 1940-1960. The dial has an inner pewter circle, outer minute divisions and a circular insert and hand to show the seconds. The numbers are finely edged with a black line and the hands are two coloured. The back of the watch is patterned with fine lines and three rectangle shapes. The words 'ANTIMAGNETIC' are on the front of the watch. Anti-magnetic watches began to be made at the beginning of the 20th century as mechanical watches were affected by magnetic fields. The 'lever' set on watches was a requirement for railroad watches. It required a two step process for the hands to be adjusted. The Dead Man’s Penny is a commemorative medallion which was presented to the next-of-kin of the men and women from England and the Empire who died during World War One. The Dead Man’s Penny was accompanied by a letter from King George V, stating ‘I join with my grateful people in sending you this memorial of a brave life given for others in the Great War’.[http://nma.gov.au/blogs/education/2010/11/14/dead-mans-penny/] Popularly known as the "Dead Man’s Penny", because of the similarity in appearance to the somewhat smaller penny coin. 1,355,000 plaques were issued, which used a total of 450 tonnes of bronze, and continued to be issued into the 1930s to commemorate people who died as a consequence of the war. Over 800 designs were submitted and the competition was won by the sculptor and medallist Edward Carter Preston with his design called Pyramus, receiving a first place prize of £250.[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Plaque_(medallion)] They were initially made at the Memorial Plaque Factory, 54/56 Church Road, Acton, W3, London from 1919. Early plaques did not have a number stamped on them but later ones have a number stamped behind the lion's back leg. Ted Cannon was a gifted artist and cartoonist who studied at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School. During the Battle of Pozieres on the Western Front Ted Cannon worked with the Scout Platoon sketching the enemy's gun emplacements. Ted proved invaluable to the Brigade and brought he came under the attention of the Australian High Command. On 13 September 1916 Ted was given a special assignment for General C.B.B. White. Ted was sent out forward of the Old Mill at Verbrandenmolen (in the Ypres Salient) to draw a panorama of the German lines in the area from Hill 60 to The Bluff. It was a hazardous task and Ted was warned to be careful. Tragically he was sniped by an enemy machine-gunner and sustained severe abdominal wounds. Stretcher-bearers rushed him to the 17th Casualty Clearing Station where he was operated on by the doctors at 8.30 that night. With little chance of success, but ever resilient, Ted remained conscious almost to the end. He died early in the morning of the 14 September 1916. His body was buried in the large Military Cemetery at Lijssenthoek. The effects of the late Ted Cannon were returned to his parents. These were an autograph book, three brushes, prayer book, housewife, whistle, book, hymn book, curios. This nurse's collar, cap and apron would have been worn by student nurses at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in the 1960's. Although the style did not change much from earlier years the length of the skirt had shortened. The white semi circular collar has a single row of drawn thread work 1.5 centimeters from the outer edge and is made of starched cotton fabric. The cap is made of a half circle of fine white cotton lawn with a turn back front edge bearing the Alfred Hospital emblem. It has a tape casing about 1.5 centimeters from the edge which contains a thin tape for gathering up the edge of the cap. Clothing. Extremely fine linen petticoat, rounded neckline with a blue satin ribbon insertion, threaded through a lace insertion. This ribbon is now badly aged and shedding and splitting. A plackett at the centre back conceals six tiny 9mm covered buttons, and machine (?) stitched button holes. The neckline is outlined with three bands of cotton lace - the first band is 4.5 cm wide, and has a 'shamrock' leaf design. The middle band is 1.5 cm wide, and has a 'twisted' design, which holds the blue ribbon insertion. Ben Boyd enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne, 13 December 1915, giving his age as 42 years and 11 months. At that time he gave Bathurst as parish of birth, and attested that his wife Emma, next of kin, resided in Fitzroy. He gave his occupation as 'cutter'. Boyd reported to Royal Park on 6 January 1916, attached to the 22nd Battalion 11th reinforcements. He embarked for the Middle East on 29 March, and it appears that he spent the rest of his service in Egypt, apart from some four months in Palestine from September 1917 to January 1918. During this time it appears that he was attached to the 11th Light Horse Regiment Provost Corps. There were various promotions to 'temporary Corporal' and 'Acting Sergeant'. Boyd disembarked in Australia on 25 August 1919. The first reference to Yackandandah in Boyd's war record came in his application for the British War Medal and Victory Medal, in a letter dated 10 February 1924. He received those medals on or about 3 March 1924. By that time he had been working in Yackandandah for several years, having been engaged as an 'up-tp-date cutter and tailor' by Mrs Haig in 1921. He continued working as a tailor until his passing in 1957. There is an anecdotal recollection of Boyd sitting up on what was the bank counter making garments and watching the world pass by on High Street, and also reference to him replying to the toast for The Diggers, at a smoke social convened by the Returned Services League to honour Sir Kenneth Beatty, at Martin's Hotel, 8 September 1927. The Yackandandah Museum is housed in what had been the Bank of Victoria and had become the business premises and residence of Haig Tailor. The building bore the title B. Boyd Tailor as late as the 1960's. Isabella Haig sold the building and residence to Yackandandah Historical Society in 1969. Instituted by King George V in 1919 to mark the end of World War I and record the service given, the British War Medal 1914-20, was also variously known as Squeak, or Mutt. Boyd was eligible for having entered a theatre of war during specified periods and having left places of residence and rendered approved service overseas. The medal is cupro-nickel (silver?) with the effigy of George V on the obverse. Above this is the risen sun of victory. The years 1914 and 1918 are shown on the outside edge of the reverse surface. A ribbon is attached per a top bar. The ribbon has a wide central watered stripe of orange, flanked by two narrow white stripes, which are in turn flanked by two black pin-stripes, further flanked by two outer stripes of blue. Two pieces of heavy brown leather about 4mm thick joined together with a lighter piece of brown leather glued and stitched with heavy thread to form a Trip Way Bill Holder for use on the SEC trams by Conductors. The outside of the folder has been tanned to give a dark brown tan. The inside of the folder has been stained light brown. The outer corners of the folder have been rounded. The folder has been scribed by a tool to give the item some presentation. Not known who made it, could have been SEC Depot Ballarat, upholstery workers.On the inside in the top left hand corner "Trip Way Bill Holder" in blue ink. ATMOEA Vic. Branch (Tramways Union) badge No. 1938. Badge made on a brass/gold backing with painted enamel on front. On central portion of the badge, had the ATMOEA logo, with words "Vic" with red enamel backing and on outer edge of badge "Aust Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees Association" with a royal blue background. On back of badge has clip for fitting through an opening on a jacket or coat lapel. On top of back of badge has number stamped in "1938" and bottom words "K. G. Luke / Melb." indicating manufacture.
