The collection is understood to have been put together by Alistair Knox although it is the work of several unacknowledged photographers. For some years it was held by the Building Department of the former Eltham Shire Council and was then passed to our Society for safekeeping. Some of the photos have been used in Knox's books and from time to time some of them have been part of various historical displays. The collection has been copied on to slides for the purpose of this meeting and to be retained as part of the Society's pictorial collection. Many of the buildings shown in the collection are of his design and he was also involved with the construction of several of them. Others are the work of his contemporaries and associates such as Peter Glass, Gordon Ford, and John Harcourt. A photo of a block of flats in Sellwood St Hawthorn (top photo) and a block at 9 The Avenue, Windsor (bottom photo) that Legacy owned and leased at reasonable rates to widows in their care. It was with a group of photos from 1988 to 1990 in a folio with paper labels (see items 01042 to 01053). The September 1975 edition the widows newsletter mentions the 20 flats purchased by Legacy at 9 The Avenue and they are being renovated for widows to live in. Two options were presented, an 'ingoing' amount of $5,000 then a week maintenance charge of $7 a week; or on a rental basis of approximately $20 a week. A photo of the Windsor units in 1976 is at 01412. This photo of the Windsor flats was taken after 1981 when sun blinds were added to the building (from a Highlights of President report in 1981). The group of flats was known as 'Windsor Lodge' until 1987 when it was renamed 'The Miriam and Frederick James Ramsay Lodge'. From copies of the Title Deeds; 9 The Avenue Windsor was purchased on 7 February 1975, and 22 Selwood St Hawthorn was purchased on 28 June 1974. It was decided the Windsor units, and the ones in Hawthorn, would be sold in 2003 and announced by President Tony Parkes. In March 1995 ATCV had circulated a proposal for an ‘Australia Corps’. The proposal emerged over time from ATCV board and staff through debate and experience. ATCV Board member Alan Wright had written earlier: “There is in our society a terrible vacuum for adolescents to give expression to their independence and idealism in a constructive way, a chance to try themselves out independent of their parents/teachers in adult roles.” ATCV’s Brisbane office manager Phil Harrison had first been involved with ATCV as a volunteer from UK, drew together ideas about an ‘Australia Corps’, that had been discussed with Alan Wright, John Fenton and others at the ATCV staff/board planning workshop at Sorrento in December 1993 and “…based upon our experience and participation in the LEAP program and observations of Conservation Corps around the world”. The concept of a six-month program for young people with a training wage and accredited training which encouraged both competencies and personal development emerged, with a standard format of ten participants working fopr six months under the direction of a supervisor. The ‘Australia Corps’ proposal was widely distributed to Federal, State and Territory parliamentarians and received positive feedback. The Liberal Party, then in Opposition, included the idea of a “Green Army” in their environmental policy, placing more emphasis on environmental outcomes and less on job creation than the Keating ALP Government had. A young and up-and-coming parliamentarian, Tony Abbott MP, was enthusiastic and was to visit several ATCV projects (both before and after Green Corps started) to learn about their workings direct from volunteers and CVA staff. Several times he visited projects with Ian Smith project and Ian recalls being impressed by the efforts he made to talk at length with all participants. Tony Abbott took a personal interest in the progress of Green Corps. Colin Jackson and Phil Harrison were guests of Abbott in Parliament House, Canberra, on the evening of 20 August 1996. The Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello, announced in his first Budget Speech that: - “the Government will provide $42 million over the next 3 years to establish the Green Corps. The Green Corps will be open to young Australians aged 17 to 20 to demonstrate their commitment to the environment by working on projects to preserve and restore Australia's natural environment and cultural heritage. The projects will also contribute to their career and employment prospects through training, skills development, work experience and personal development.” ATCV’s chief executive officer Colin Jackson worked with senior staff Madeline Townsend, Garry Snowden, Phil Harrison, and John Fenton to fine-tune the ATCV proposal. On the strength of unique national coverage and credible record ATCV went on to win the tender to administer and manage the day-to-day operations of the Green Corps program for five years (1997-2002). Winning a $36 million contract was a big breakthrough for ATCV. Fourteen years before, a small non-profit group had started in Ballarat in country Australia with a vision – but little else. Its key people had shaped opinion and won political support for a concept. There was about to be transformation from hand-to-mouth existence into a nation-wide business with resources to build for the long term. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. A photo of a class of young legatees in 1951, in a garage, called the East Brighton Group. There are 29 boys, of various ages, in gymnastic gear with the Legacy logo on the chest and 4 men who could be the instructor and a Legacy member. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years, such as gymnastics and swimming classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. The notes on the back mentioned there are 6 other groups of boys (perhaps those in Kew, Fitzroy, Footscray, Malvern and Auburn in the other photos mentioned). The names are: From the left, rear: L/. The collection is understood to have been put together by Alistair Knox although it is the work of several unacknowledged photographers. For some years it was held by the Building Department of the former Eltham Shire Council and was then passed to our Society for safekeeping. Some of the photos have been used in Knox's books and from time to time some of them have been part of various historical displays. As far as we know there has not been a public display of the whole collection which numbers about forty photographs. The collection has been copied on to slides for the purpose of this meeting and to be retained as part of the Society's pictorial collection. Alistair Knox 1912 - 1986 is acknowledged as the founder of Eltham's mud brick building movement. Many of the buildings shown in the collection are of his design and he was also involved with the construction of several of them. Others are the work of his contemporaries and associates such as Peter Glass, Gordon Ford, and John Harcourt. This set of 20 black & white photographs of the refurbishment of Air Survey Squadron’s production areas, was taken in circa 1982. These refurbishments were most likely in preparation of the AUTOMAP 2 production system and to accommodate the expansion of the Army Survey Regiment’s work force. This photo set also includes the exterior and interior of a new building - 16A, a modular building of several sections transported in and joined together as part of the expansion. Another modular building - 16B was added later in the 1980s to accommodate Technical Services. Advised by Tony Smith - 29/3/2017 "The tram in question is VR 39. It was one of the last 4 trams disposed of from Elwood depot in 1959 after the system closed. They were purchased complete by Upton's machinery dealers of Corowa. The other cars were 29, 33 & 37. He then stripped them and sold the bodies. When we obtained VR 41 in 1977 we immediately went searching for other bodies that might yield parts to help in rebuilding 41. We located 37 on the outskirts of Wangaratta and it yielded many body items including a complete drivers bulkhead that was used to replace the one in VR 41 that had been cut out with an axle by the previous owner. You may also recall that we obtained 3 complete broad gauge 77e trucks from Upton's (they had cut up the other 5 bogies years previous). This is a set of 35 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment personnel undertaking military skills revision, at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, 1985. They participated in lessons on the handling of the M30 Grenade and SLR Rifle. These lessons were part of the six objectives of regimental training outlined in the administrative instruction – Exercise “City Soldier” accompanying these photos. The other objectives were first aid at Fortuna, RATEL and navigation at Wellsford Forest; and rifle shooting at Wellsford Rifle Range. Personnel from Air Survey, Cartographic, Lithographic and Headquarters Squadrons were reallocated to four training platoons for one week from 7th to 11th October 1985.This is a set of 35 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment undertaking military skills revision, part of Regimental Training at Fortuna Villa 1985. The order of service of the event at the MCG attended by the Queen on 25 February 1954. It was held by the ex-servicemen and ex-servicewomen of Victoria and the War Bereaved. Legacy played a part. A Legacy ward presented the Queen with a bouquet of flowers and the junior legatees performed for her by forming the letters 'E.R.' on the ground. This was organised by the instructors of the girls and boys classes including Miss Enez Domec Carre. It was the official commemorative document of the occasion. The Queen visited the MCG twice during her visit to Melbourne, once was this exservicemen rally when Legacy children attended, and a second time when it was for all school children. Pathe News footage of the ex-servicemen rally show a two legacy children presenting a posy (see photo above). An article in the Legacy Newsletter in July 1954 featured the event and says Beverley Emsley and Trevor Rees were the children presenting the bouquet and they were accompanied by an escort of: Cam Secombe, Gordon Spong, Dan Craig, Lawrence Challis, Tony Minogue, Elaine Turner, Marie Hunt, Margaret Paltridge, Glennis Foder, and Judith Bishop. The newspaper article for the children's rally said "Legacy wards Brenda Mutimer, 11, of Princes Hill Central school, presented a posy to the Queen and John Barker, 14, of Box Hill High school handed the Duke two Australian animal books for Prince Charles and Princess Anne." Skippy and Toni St Elmo were responsible for early developments at the Falls Creek resort and for promoting a love of skiing. They left Melbourne in 1945 and settled at Falls Creek and moved into the first building constructed of corrugated iron and timber at Falls Creek in 1946. They were Falls Creek’s first workers with Toni employed by the State Electricity Commission to record weather-related data up to the construction of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme. In 1957, Toni was involved in building the first rope tow called Nissen on the same route as the Summit Quad. He also established the Nissen Ski School with ski instructor Milan Kovacic and was involved in the building of the resort’s first ski club Bogong in 1949. Toni taught Skippy to ski and she practised on the High Plains where she and her husband lived. Skippy St Elmo won many ski races during the 1950’s and represented Australia in New Zealand.Skippy and Toni St Elmo were pioneers of the Falls Creek area, promoting local ski sports and tourism. The played an important role in opening up the Falls Creek area and developing its sporting potential by establishing the first ski school, ski lifts and early lodge facilities. Skippy and Toni St Elmo were honoured at the Alpine Village at Falls Creek on November 17 2006, with the spreading of their ashes at the place which played such an important part in both their lives.Set of 8 black and white photographs of Skippy St Elmo and other skiers 1. H.M.C.S Protector. 1884- Commissioned into the South Australia Colonial Naval forces. 1900- Briefly commissioned into the royal Navy for service in the boxer reballion. in China. 1911- Commissioned into the royal Australian Navy. 1914- 18 served in New Guinea waters and Australian waters abd surveyed the wreck of the EMDEN in 1915. 1921- Renamed H.M.A.S Cerberus. 1924 Reverted to the name Protector and sold out of service 1941- Requisitioned for war service with the U.S army Small Ships command. 1944- Damaged near gladstone and left on a reef off heron II and, where she now rests.
