A postcard in a series produced by the Rose Stereograph Company in Victoria, Australia as a souvenir of Marysville.A black and white photograph showing a panoramic view from Wych Cross which was a guesthouse in Marysville. The Wych Cross Private Guesthouse was part of the Wych Cross Private Hotel Co. Ltd of which Mr. Felix Jellicoe was Managing Director at the time. The guesthouse burnt down in a fire on the 14th of November, 1926. This fire started in the kitchen where it was soon extinguished by one of the employees. However, it is believed that sparks from the earlier fire, which were not noticed at the time, ignited the second fire which destroyed the weatherboard guesthouse in 20 minutes. Guests who were staying at the guesthouse were all away from the premises at the time of the fire and lost all their belongings; including one guest who lost a considerable sum of money.POST CARD REAL PHOTO/ THE "ROSE" SERIES DE LUXE PRODUCED IN AUSTRALIA Published by "The Rose Stereographs"/ Armadale, Victoria. Photograph, c.1927-1930
This image shows the Punt (a kind of small boat) that took residents of Bethanga across the Murray River before the Bethanga Bridge was built. Bethanga Bridge was built between 1927 and 1930, and was made a necessity by the building of the Hume Dam. The Hume Dam, formerly known as the Hume Weir, was in construction between 1919 and 1936, which swelled the Murray River into the floodplain to the East of the dam permanently, creating Lake Hume, and isolating the residents of Bethanga and nearby towns, for whom the trip all the way around the new lake to another river crossing was a massive undertaking. The person who wrote on the back of this card instead chose to cross the river on a boat until the Bethanga Bridge became available. Interestingly, partially submerged trees can be seen in the lake in the background of this photograph, illustrating that the dam had already begun to fill the floodplain even before the bridge was built. This photograph shows the methods the residents of Bethanga used while the Bethanga Bridge was being built. This record is associated with the Heritage Listed sites of the Hume Dam and the Bethanga Bridge, and shows the environment during the process of construction and the creation of Lake HumeSepia rectangular photograph printed on matte photographic paperReverse: 1997.3189 / 84 -19 -1 / This is the snap of the Punt. / Our only means of getting out / of Bethanga for the present / Until the bridge is completed / it is 2 miles above the junction / of the Mitta + Murray. Tool - Cabinet Scraper, 1945-1955
A cabinet scraper (sometimes called a ‘card scraper’) is a woodworking tool used for shaping and finishing furniture. The name ‘cabinet’ is used because scrapers are versatile and important tools for cabinet makers to provide a smooth surface to a finished cabinet. The body and the cutting edges of most cabinet scrapers are formed from a single piece of material. The blades are created on each edge of the body. Also, a scraper can have adjustable blades and a wooden handle these are two-handled cabinet scrapers. Cabinet scrapers are used manually to scrape small amounts of material from the surface of the wood to smooth it, shape it, or remove an old finish such as varnish from its surface. They are commonly used on furniture and musical instruments such as guitars and violins. The tools can be used on hardwood or softwood but when using a cabinet scraper on any wood, you should generally work along the grain.A tool used to finish timber to give a smooth finish and a important tool for a cabinet maker that has been in use for many hundreds of years in different design formsBox scraper adjustable with long wooden handle.Noneflagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, box scraper, scraper, woodwork tool, cabinet scraper, furniture finishing -
