These eight photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Bendigo in November 1978. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. Refer to Item 6267. All eight photographs have been taken at a workmen's camp erected by the State Electricity Commission to house workmen during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. These were established in close proximity to various work centres - Junction Camp at Bogong Village, three camps at Mt. Beauty, West Kiewa, Clover Dam and Clover Flat, Howman's sawmill and Howman's Gap, Rocky Valley, Langford's Gap, Pretty Valley, Mountain Creek and Big Hill. These photos have not been identified as to which camp they are taken but typical of the type of accommodation for wages personnel. They followed a general design and layout. There was a mess and recreation hall as well as a building for general trading and postal facilities (this conducted by proprietors of trading stores in Mt. Beauty and Bogong). Originally the rooms accommodated 2 men but later there was a demand for single rooms - the floor size then being 10 feet x 8 feet and furnished with a bed, small table and chair and cupboard with hanging space. Members of the Victorian Police force were some of the first to answer the call with twenty men joining the first convoy of soldiers who left Australian shores in October 1914. Over the course of four long years, one hundred and thirty-eight Victorian Police enlisted from stations across the state. Of these, twenty-seven lost their lives. Whilst the fate of each man was different, a deep commitment to protecting and serving the public was common to all. This book was prepared for the Buchan School centenary. In the Buchan District itinerant teaching was conducted in buildings with log walls and a bark roof typical of the mid 19th century. Not until 1878 was the first State school built on the same general site as the present school, on the Orbost Rd, ⅓ of a mile from the bridge over the Buchan River. This original school building must have been constructed from high quality timber, because it still serves as the shelter pavilion. On 11th of July 1878 William Scott opened the first school of approximately 40 pupils ranging from Grade 1 - 8. A larger weatherboard school was erected in 1914. A residence was provided for the HT in 1934 and in 1956 a second classroom erected and attached to the 1914 building. Unfortunately, all records of the Committee were lost in a fire when the homestead of Alex Cameron, then serving as Committee Secretary, was burnt to the ground, but it is well known to local citizens that Frank Moon, local prospector, explorer and discoverer of the famous Buchan Limestone Caves, attended school at SS1905 Buchan. Although the Railway line had been planned for some time Sir Thomas Bent MP was responsible for making it happen in order to revitalize the fortunes of the Moorabbin Shire that he had represented for so long. The train line opened in 1881with 8 Stations between Caulfield and Mordialloc.The first Steam engine carried dignitaries and local residents. Bent also ensured that the Station houses in his constituency were built in a distinctive decorative cottage style. Bent faced severe criticism for diverting the rail line through his local area and for the expenditure on the Stations. Local residents established and cared for Gardens at the Stations and Cheltenham was awarded Best Garden c1910. The arrival of the Railway Line saw the traders move from Point Nepean Rd to Charman Rd and by 1910 various shops and business were present. 2016 - current has seen large protest rallies against the destruction of Mentone Station and Cheltenham Station as the Victorian State Government proceeds to remove Railway Level Crossings. Information from donor: "The orange booklet was printed mid-to-late 1930’s or early 40’s by my father Curtis Drenen, and written by my grandfather Thomas Drenen. The original publication would have been handset by Thomas’s employees as he had a keen interest in the mines financially. This booklet has been set and cast in hot metal on a linotype machine my father purchased after taking over the Rutherglen “Sun” and passing of Thomas in July 1932. This booklet was one of half a dozen I put together when I found some flat sheets of 8 page sections stored away in a cupboard. I folded, collated the sections, stapled and trimmed these Sheets during my time at the “Sun” from 1951 to1969. Where the rest are I have no idea. I wrote the final paragraph on Page 44 from a copy provided be my mother." Thomas Drenen was Proprietor and Editor of The Rutherglen "Sun," from 1886 to 1932. Alice Louisa (Louise) Jackson was one of 12 children of George James Jackson and his wife Alice Eleanor (nee Taylor); both of whom were jewellers. One of her brothers, George Hall Jackson, served in WW1. The family lived at 'Handsworth', 7 Russell Street, Surrey Hills. Alice was born 25/9/1892 and died 25/8/1983. She worked there after graduating and became the charge sister of the ward for terminally ill patients, many of whom were TB patients. After she retired from the Austin she nursed elderly and dying people in the Surrey Hills area. She had had a tricycle made especially for her as she could not ride a bicycle. She would always ride in the centre of the road in case the trike tipped over. She left her estate to the hospital. In 1858 Hugh Wallace , undertaker and cabinet maker, moved from the Assembly Rooms at the corner of Gipps street, and opened his new Bank Hotel in Sackville street, next door to the grand Bank of Australasia. The hotel seems to have been the favourite meeting place for many of the sporting organisations of the time , including the Football, Rowing, Athletic and Gymnastics clubs . The second licensee was Thomas Pearson, who came to Belfast in 1855, working first for the Harbour master Capt. John Mills , then as the first Assistant Lighthouse keeper when it was built in 1859 . He was promoted to Lighthouse keeper 2 years later. The hotel continued in business with a further 8 licensees until it closed in 1918. Since which it has housed a diverse number of businesses, collecting a veranda along the way. It is still in use in Sackville street today. Quite a few of the Licensees of Belfast seem to have also had an interest in the Funeral business. Possibly, it was a good commercial undertaking, the same people providing them with a living selling spirituous liquor, and when they died of the effects , paid again for their burial. Keith Winterbottom was born in the small settlement of Moulamen near Swan Hill in 1891.He enlisted in the AIF on the 7 April 1916 as a private and allocated to the 1st refit for the 38th Battalion. He was single and 25 years old and a strong 6 footer after working as a labour/timber cutter around Swan Hill. He embarked for France in July 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth on the 10 August 1916. Proceeded to France [ Ypres] on the 16 September and taken on strength with the 59th Battalion on the 8 October 1916. He suffered very serious GSW to his chest, arm, and left leg on the 10 December 1916 and was admitted to the Casualty clearing station at Heilly on the 11 December. His wounds were extensive and major and he died of these wounds on the 12 December 1916. He was buried at the Hospital Cemetery at Heilly, France. His kit that was returned to his mother contained a football, scarf, a razor strop and two ties. On the 18 June 1923 is mother was given the Memorial Plaque 318573 inscribed with her son's name Keith Winterbottom Memorial Plaque [Dead Man Penny]Inscribed with the name Keith Winterbottom. A draft of a report that was compiled in response to a request for any information on the early history of Legacy. The author is unknown but it was addressed to President Foseltt - meaning it was 1972. It could have been in the 1960s when Syd Birrell was forming an archive, or the archive project by Frank Doolan in early 1970s. A collection of documents which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. He outlined which legatees suggested different things - such as Selleck suggested the name of Legacy, Doolan put forward the child scheme. He also recorded birth dates of some Legatees: Selleck born 20/8/1895 ; Savige 26/6/1890 ; Ellet 30/3/1880 ; TW White 26/4/1888. Other documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. Newspaper articles about the Christmas Party held at Government House in 1960. One is from The Age on 12 December 1960 and two from The Herald on the same day. Melbourne Legacy would hold Christmas parties for junior Legatees at Government House for many years due to the Governor of Victoria being patron of Legacy. Two photos show the Governor Sir Dallas Brooks the reins of a miniature mail coach drawn by two small ponies. Sitting with the Governor is 10 year old Sandra Fitzpatrick of Moe. Children would come from all over Victoria. Two other photos show archery with the Kew City Bowman providing instruction of archery to the children. Judith Berry was instructing Ken Barberis 8 years old. Also a photo is of Mickey Hodder, 11, of Lower Templestowe and Ivy Murray, 5, of Box Hill. The articles were cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion.
