John Cecil Burton and his brother Cecil Hubert formed The Leicester Rubber Company in 1906, to sell imported cycle tyres. The Company's patriotic 'John Bull' trade mark came into force a few years later in 1908. In 1915 the Rubber Company started to manufacture its own bicycle and pram tyres at its Evington Valley Road site in Leicester, and in 1928 they started to mass produce car and motorcycle tyres at the site. The name was changed to the John Bull Rubber Company in 1934, and in 1937 an associated company was formed to manufacture rubber to metal components - Metalastic. Date is approximate. Donor's connection with Armitstead's Woodyard was that Frank Foley was a long term employee. The Empire Day movement was instituted in England in 1904 and on 24 May 1906 a group of Surrey Hills residents pledged to make Empire Day a success. From 1932-1938 large Empire Day celebrations were held in Surrey Hills and business and commercial vehicles were decorated to take part in large processions held in May each year. These attracted large crowds from all over Melbourne. The truck is parked outside Nethercourt Hospital at 15 Barton Street. The Armitstead family had a business in Union Road which supplied wood in winter and ice in summer. Photos such as this one are evidence of the importance once attached to celebrating Empire Day, which was held on 24 May (Queen Victoria’s birthday). From 1905, a range of patriotic activities across Australia were performed on this day. There was a focus on schoolchildren, who were given a half-holiday, and the occasion was often highlighted with bonfires and fireworks in the evening - in this area at Beckett Park. The parade down Union Road was famous throughout Melbourne and attracted large crowds. Floats in the parade were often decked with British flags. The pro-Empire sentiment in the Surrey Hills area in part reflected the background and strong ties of many families.Black and white photo of a delivery truck with bunting and ferns over the cabin and back. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Ethel Rose Douglas married George Dawson Garvin in 1906 and was twice Mayoress from 1931 - 32 and 1938 - 39. Mayoress Ethel Garvin died in 1952 aged 74 and had been an esteemed member of the Women's Central Auxiliary of the Bendigo Base Hospital, a member of the Baby Health Centre and Mayoral Ladies Auxiliary. Stained glass window, south wall, main nave (adjacent to the pulpit). The window is a pictorial representation of St Andrew who live to old age. There is a tradition that on being sentenced to death, he requested that he be crucified on a saltire (diagonal cross, see base of window) as he felt unworthy to be crucified on the vertical cross of Christ. Another symbol of association with St Andrew is the fishing net.The Rev. Andrew Peacock, Archdeacon of the Otways, was the fourth Vicar (1906-1912) of the Parish of Warrnambool. He was highly regarded throughout the community and died following a very short illness. His brother, Sir Alexander Peacock, three times premier of Victoria, officially unveiled a tablet on the north-west corner of the Parish Hall complex on Saturday 25th April and attended the dedication of the memorial window on Sunday 26th April 1913. Rev AE Peacock is buried at Creswick cemetery, Victoria.

Elaine Mann was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community.This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th century.Wodonga, High Street West Businesses including T. B. Erlandsen & Son. and the Terminus Hotel. Thorald Erlandsen purchased his premises in the 1950s. The building was previously owned by John Whan. It started out as a general store but was later extended to include a drapers. The building sold in 1966 to Manns. The Terminus Hotel was built in 1873. It was purchased by Annie and George Allen in 1879. In 1888 they added extensions including a billiard room, a dining room and 18 other rooms. After the death of her husband, Annie Allen continued to run the Terminus Hotel. She later married John Haldon and was licensee of the hotel until 1893 when the license was transferred to William Carkeek. Carkeeks owned the hotel from 1900 - 1903 and again from 1906 - 1909. This pencil was used as an advertising medium for the Warrnambool firm of Archie Graham and Sons. It was given to customers of the firm. Archie Graham (1906-1992) commenced a building business in Warrnambool in the 1930s and was well-known for his many building projects in the city and his innovation in the industry. Archie Graham was a prominent member of the Uniting Church and a tireless worker in community affairs in Warrnambool for sixty years. He planned and organized the street decorations for the Warrnambool Centenary in 1947, was chairman of the committee that developed Albert Park and the Reid Oval and was active in Rotary Club and Cricket Club affairs. He was also a member of the Warrnambool Technical School Council. Today the building in Timor Street for senior citizens and other community use is named after Archie Graham. This pencil is of interest as a memento of the type of complimentary article given to customers of businesses in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. It is also a memento of Archie Graham, an important businessman and community worker in Warrnambool in the 20th century. This is a large six-sided wooden pencil sharpened at one end. The pencil is painted green with a white band near the top and a black-colored end rounded at the top. The paint on the pencil is slightly chipped. The inside of the pencil contains graphite for writing or drawing. This is a book containing early 20th century photographs of the town of Terang in the Western District of Victoria. Most of the photographs were taken by Robert Frederick Scott (1877-1953). He was born in Koroit and came to Terang in his early years. He took up coach building and in 1906 he moved to Cobden where he continued coach building with W.J. Silvester. He was regarded at the time as a clever mechanical engineer and was a pioneer in the motor garage business. In the 1930s he was a representative for the Melbourne firm of A.H. McDonald & Co. in the machinery business. He installed milking machines in the Western District and Gippsland. His hobby was photography and he took many photographs in the Western District and supplied photographs to the Victorian Railways for inclusion in the train carriages. This book is of considerable interest as a record of the town of Terang in the early 20th century. The photographs are of high quality and the book will be useful to researchers.This is a soft cover book of 52 pages. Nelson’s New Drawing Course was in use around the early part of the 20th century. The owner of this particular copy Mary Norman, was born in Ararat in July 1883. She produced her first public work in 1900 and came to Warrnambool in 1901 and worked with S. Pearce Fuller. She taught at Warrnambool Ladies’ High School at Upton in Canterbury Road and also took art classes at Fullers Art School. She left Warrnambool in 1906, going first to Echuca before returning to Ararat where she set up her studio and held her first public exhibition in 1908. She married Jesse Bail in 1922 and had one child Jessica in 1923. She died in 1962 in Ararat, aged 79. Mary Norman worked in Warrnambool, and has left a significant amount of work of scenes from around the district. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has five in its collection, Gaul’s Cave, Mermaid Cave, Seascape, Wreck of “La Bella”, Clifton Banks, Hopkins River.Dark olive green hardcover book with black scrolling and coat of arms at bottom of cover. Richard John Webb (c. 1832-1906) was the Senior Constable of the Chinese Constabulary in Bendigo in the 1850's. He was promoted to Dunolly and the rank of Sergeant in late 1860. In 1864 he was made the keeper of the gunpowder magazine at Dunolly. He married Kate Corbett in 1867 and they had 3 children; James Ramsay (1868-1929),Annie Harriet (1869-1950) and Kate Margaret Irene (1874-1963). Neither of the girls married and James became a doctor. Following his time at Dunolly, Webb was transferred to Eaglehawk and thence to Gippsland where he served at Bairnsdale. He retired as a Superintendent of Police and died in Melbourne. These graves are situated at a small medieval church that is a popular baptismal and wedding church. It is part of the Råbelöv estate in Kristianstad Municipality, Scania, in southern Sweden. They are the graves of Douglas and his brother. In 1906, the eldest son of James Kennedy, Douglas Kennedy, the future fidei commissioner, took his life. Four years later another son took his life. James and his wife took the disasters hard, they fell ill. The young son Gilbert got in 1908, only 22 years old, took over responsibility for the farm. James son Gilbert Kennedy took over as Fidei Commissioner in 1916 and they became known as outstanding farmers with, among other things, grazing for dairy cows and fruit growing as specialties.
