Thomas retroflexion pessary associated with Dr Frank Forster, c. 1901 to 1930
This type of pessary was used in the treatment of retroflexion of the uterus. Thomas’ Retroflexion Pessary is narrower in proportion to its length, while the greater bow is enlarged to a bulb-like form. It enjoyed great popularity and as such was manufactured in a great variety of sizes. Comprised of hard rubber because of its lightness and the high polish that may be given it. The shape can be adjusted by covering the device in petrolatum and heating it with a spirit lamp or immersing it in boiling water. Manufactured in three sizes, and could be combined with a cup and stem external support. See Allen & Hanburys Gynaecological instruments catalogue, page 707.Vulcanite pessary. Pessary is loosely horseshoe shaped, tapering to a point at the proximal end. The curve of the pessary at the distal end thickens and is rounded. Majority of the pessary is concave.intrauterine device, pessary -

Artwork, other - Installation/Sculpture, Troy Innocent, Joel Collins, Indae Hwang, Yun Tae Nam, Drop Zone, 2011
'Drop Zone', is set in an imagined future where decreasing water availability has affected us more dramatically than anyone predicted. The water shortage has become so severe that we have to access water on a first-come first-serve basis, from military-like water ‘drop zones’, like this one, made from modified rain water tanks. These tanks function on three levels: Collected rain water causes the totem sculptures to rise and bloom; evaporation causes the totem sculptures to fall; and an anemometer (device that measures wind speed) drives a process that plays the tank like a giant drum, tuned by the amount of water contained within. This artwork envisions a future for Australia where the impact of decreasing water availability has had a more dramatic effect than any of the predictions. The shortage is so severe that military-like water ‘drop zones’, constructed of modified rainfall storage tanks have been established across the public parks of the City of Yarra for access on a first come, first serve basis. However, as the water is only replenished through rain catchment the tanks may only offer infrequent relief for the City of Yarra residents, standing as hollow reminders of the effects of inaction on the shaping of sustainable national water use.'Drop Zone' was one of three public art works installed in Yarra, in 2011, under the banner of The Environmental Public Arts Project which responded to key features of Council's Environment Strategy: 'Towards Local Sustainability 2008-2020.' The aims of this project included activating public spaces in new and creative ways through the creation of artworks which act as catalysts for further engagement and discussion around environmental themes and issues.Copyright the Artists. Ready-made corrugated water tanks arranged on a site. Situated within the tanks are small totemic sculptures that float on top of the water within the tank.Accompanying plaquesustainability, water, environment, climate change -

Artwork, other - earthwork, ephemeral, Ivan Cindric, Earthwork Heron, 1997
"This sculpture was inspired by the figures carved from the hillsides of the chalk downs in Britain. I wanted to produce a work that would become part of the landscape and was originally derived from the landscape. It is a white-faced heron which is a native water bird commonly found along the Merri Creek. The bird is looking upstream to the source of the creek and the other artworks along the creek."Made of scoria (a red-brown volcanic stone) laid in trenches, 'Earthwork Heron' was commissioned by the Merri Creek Management Committee as part of the Merri Creek Arts Plan and was donated to the City of Yarra in August 1997.Contemporary, LandartOutline of a Heron bird imprinted on a rolling hill in the landscape with volcanic stone (scoria). Accompanying plaque reads: 'This sculpture was inspired by the figures in the British Chalk Hills. I wanted Earthwork Heron to be derived from and become part of the landscape. Bottle, Felton Grimwade & Duerdins Ltd, Bottle of Potassium Permanganate, Using the company name, it dates between 1929 and the early 1950s
"Potassium permanganate is an inorganic chemical compound with the chemical formula KMnO4. It is a salt consisting of K+ and MnO−4 ions. Formerly known as permanganate of potash or Condy's crystals, it is a strong oxidizing agent. It dissolves in water to give intensely pink or purple solutions, the evaporation of which leaves prismatic purplish-black glistening crystals. (Which is what in contained in the bottle.) As an oxidant, potassium permanganate can act as an antiseptic. For example, dilute solutions are used to treat canker sores (ulcers), disinfectant for the hands and treatment for mild pompholyx, dermatitis, and fungal infections of the hands or feet. Potassium permanganate is used extensively in the water treatment industry. Historically it was used to disinfect drinking water. (From Wikipedia)" Eight sided, rectangular, clear glass bottle containing grey filings. It is closed with a cork, which is probably broken off. Label indicates Potassium Permanagate manufactured by Felton, Grimwade & Duerdins Ltd. "POTASSI PERMANGANATE."/"POISON"/"Felton Grimwade & Duerdins Ltd." on label on front. Enamelled Potato Bucket (Aardappel Emmer), Early 20th century
The Dutch traditionally ate large quantities of potatoes. These would be peeled ahead of time by available labour (e.g., mother, children, visiting relatives) and kept under water till it was time to cook them. Vegetables were similarly prepared and kept under water to prevent browning before cooking. The bucket is green enamelled on the outside and grey enamelled on the inside. The metal carry handle is looped through metal loops protruding above the rim.Aardappelen (Potatoes) kitchen, diet, vegetables -

Given to former prisoners in Japanese camps in the former Dutch East Indies after liberation 1946. Dutch colonists suffered incarceration under the Japanese occupation of former Dutch East Indies. Post-war many returned to The Netherlands where they suffered from the cold. It was difficult for them to settle in and this gift would have been a welcome gesture of acceptance.Hollow cylindrical copper tube with copper screw top with circular handle.
