The shopping centre in Mt Beauty, both buildings and streetscape, have undergone significant changes since 1973. The kindergarten has undergone extensive remodelling, The Chalet has been replaced by Svarmisk Resort and Accommodation Spa. Tawonga hospital has undergone extensive renovation and is now Mt Beauty Hospital AND Kiewa Valley House. The Workman’s Club changed name to the Country Club and has since closed down. Hospital and Kiewa Valley House now occupy what is shown as a vacant lot opposite the motel which is now called Mt Beauty Motor Inn.The houses in Mt Beauty were brought in by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria when they constructed Mt Beauty Town for their workers building the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Bogong Primary School opened in 1941 to provide an education for the employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The school had up to date equipment and received glowing reports from school inspectors. It closed c1986.The Bogong State School was opened for the children of S.E.C.V. workers who lived in Bogong in a remote part of north east Victoria. Bogong Village, which was known as “The Junction”, is well recorded. The first tent camp was at the junction of Pretty Valley and Rocky Valley streams in the early 40’s. Further downstream were the sawmill, stables and blacksmith’s forge. Horses were the main mode of transport in the early days. The road to Bogong had reached the lookout spur just beyond Roper’s Spur track just before the 1939 fires. The early forties saw rapid growth of the village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school. Much of the temporary accommodation that housed groups such as the Albion Quarrying Company were in the area now under water.This group of photographs are a pictorial record of the early history of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, the people who worked in the background supplying administrative support and the workers and their families. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) initiated the conversion from primarily brown coal supply to hydro – electricity. Field investigations during the 1940’s resulted in a new proposal for a scheme that had more than double the capacity of the 1938 scheme. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. The number of personnel involved in the planning and construction of the scheme increased dramatically. During the late 1940’s, most activity centred around the construction of the West Kiewa Power Station, Rocky Valley Reservoir, McKay Creek Power Station and the Bogong Creek Aqueduct.A common thread across all the larger hydro scheme constructions was the need for workers, both qualified and unqualified who came from around the world seeking a new life for themselves and their families. New accommodation and facilities were required for the army of workers engaged in construction in often remote and wild areas. The Kiewa Valley has been a farming district from early settlement of white people. This has continued until the present although the nature of farming has varied over the years. Access to information has improved with transport and technology. The journals kept the farmers informed and up to date.These booklets and journals were one of the few sources of information during the 1950s for the isolated farmers of the Kiewa Valley. The Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme improved both transport and technology during the scheme's construction from the 1940s. Kergunyah is a small town in the Kiewa Valley in north east Victoria. It is 10km south of Kiewa (town) and 23 km north of Dederang (town). it is farming country commencing in 1838, developing into a small community in 1974 with a School, Church, Post Office, Football Club, Young Farmer Club C.W.A. Netball Club, Card Club and Fire Brigade.Kergunyah is in the Kiewa Valley. Mt Beauty was a construction town built from 1948. The houses were English Pre-cut Types - several of each type were erected with several variations. This house had 3 bedrooms and is dated as 'traced on 18 Dec. 1956'. Mt Beauty is a construction town built by the SECV during the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme for workers and their families. Houses were provided along with many other facilities eg. schools. This book is a sixth grade reader which all Victorian students would have read during the 1940's. The book is made up of poems and stories, some which are still known and told today. Some pages have drawings that relate to the story of poems. This is historically significant due to showing what children read during the 1940's in schools across Victoria. Also it is a good comparison to what grade six children read now. Therefore it has good interpretation value and would be good in local school exhibitions. The names on the book indicate that this book came from a local famil, the Johnson and was read to two children of that family which gives this good social history. Some of the pages have had their pictured colored in by the student and words that have been underlined. These could have been harder words for the students to learn and seem advanced for grade six children to read. These films were used c1940s and 1950s to educate students in Bogong and Mt Beauty Primary Schools. The visual experience enabled all students to see the same picture as the teacher read out the caption. Bogong and Mt Beauty Primary Schools are in the Kiewa Valley established as a result of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria's Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Bogong school had a reputation for an excellent library especially with regard to nature. Hard covered brown book with gold embossed writing on the cover and spine including the title, author, part 11 and Price 2/6. Spine has black stamp near the base indicating it was in a library. Includes coloured Plates which illustrate the text - showing the insects and plants. Inside the covers the pages are a pale green floral type decoration. Bogong Primary School opened in 1941 to provide an education for the employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The school had up to date equipment and received glowing reports from school inspectors. It closed c1986.The Bogong State School was opened for the children of S.E.C.V. workers who lived in Bogong in a remote part of north east Victoria. The nearest school would have been 14 miles away and over mountain roads subject to heavy construction traffic and extremes of climatic conditions.6 bright orange 'bibs' from Bogong Primary School. The Tawonga South Tennis Club commenced in 1946 and was situated on the last property on the riverside before the Tawonga South bridge where there was also a kiosk. Tennis was very popular in the Kiewa Valley with the influx of players available from the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. In the Bogong-Tawonga Tennis Association there were three Bogong teams - Cope, McKay and Beauty with the other teams from Tawonga called Wanderers, Rovers, Pines and South Tawonga. Reported in the SEC magazine, Oct--Nov. 1946 Page 45:- "The membership now totals eighty, and both Bogong courts are in continuous use during week-ends and in the evenings and early mornings." There were clubs & teams in Bogong, Mt Beauty and Tawonga. This trophy indicates that there was a tennis association at Tawonga South in 1950. In 1945 the Tawonga South school was set up to serve the children of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria employees. The school was extended from one room to two in 1955 to avoid congestion. This would indicate that the population would have been sufficient for a tennis club as well. In the SEC Magazine 1946 Page 45:- "South Tawonga Tennis Club has arranged social functions to raise funds, and working bees are busy on the erection of a tennis court. The president is Mr. N. Piera, the secretary Mr. H. Wilson and the treasurer Mrs. W. Griffiths.Tarnished metal trophy with cup and two, extending above the cup, handles either side. In 1950, the "Project Competition - Australia as a Member of the British Commonwealth of Nations" was conducted. Bogong State School was awarded a First Prize in the competition. The prize being 10 pounds to be used to purchase books for the school library on Empire subjects. Bogong is a local town established by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. This letter is significant in that it shows that the British Empire was very relevant to the population at the time and being promoted in schools.Cream decorated frame with glass front and paper backing.
