Francis Matthew (Frank) Child (1928 – 2020) was the son of Bernard Child (1907 – 1995). Bernard was the son of Ethel May Madden and an unknown father. When Ethel married Ted Child in 1908 Bernard was raised by Ted’s parents Francis and Martha Child. Bernard married Dulcie Paice (1904 – 1990) and they had one son, Frank Child, before they divorced in 1943. Ernest Butcher served as No 56 8th Light Horse Regiment. He died of wounds sustained during the August 1915 offensive at Gallipoli. He is buried at Ari Burnu Cemetery Gallipoli. The death medallion was mounted on a wooden panel by his nephew Arthur Butcher and presented to 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles on Anzac Day 1977. The 8th Light Horse suffered crippling casualties in the August offensive at Gallipoli. This photograph is taken in the lady's home, and the Medical Student and Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) Sister are supervising the lady walking with two 4 prong sticks.From the founding of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) in 1885, known as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) from 1966, the rehabilitation of patients to ensure they were able to live independently in their own homes was at the forefront of care given by their Trained Nurses (Sisters). As well as teaching and supervising the use of equipment, their Sisters taught them safe transfer techniques. These techniques were also taught to family members to enable them to care for their loved ones. RDNS at first held workshops given by a contracted private Physiotherapist before employing their own Physiotherapist in 1975 who taught staff the correct techniques, not only for safety of the patient, but to reduce physical strain on RDNS nursing staff and patient’s family members. Begins with an unseen business man asking his secretary to ring his wife to tell her he will be late and is going to visit one of his other families. We see him driving his car, which is full of smoke from his pipe, whilst the narrator explains what Legacy does. The Legatee sheds his coat and trilby hat to play cricket with the fatherless son before having tea and cake with the widow whilst her story and that of her two children is told - details of the Legacy assistance are given. The film then moves to Legacy House where exercise classes are taking place and the smoking pipe makes a reappearance. Information about Legacy's work for the health and wellbeing of Junior Legatees is given, as well as details of the Mother's Club. The film shows the many Legacy committees at work before moving on to holidays organised for Junior Legatees at a beach side cottage - there is no indication of which city is featured at this stage but the beach could be Bondi. Widows are shown meeting at Legacy House, and then we see more elderly widows at Lady Gowrie House. Kyle Williams House for convalescent children is featured and is located near Sydney, which would indicate that the film is about Sydney Legacy. Archbold House, a hostel for girls, and Glen Mervyn House for boys are also featured, as is Cull House for boys undertaking apprenticeships. The film notes that there were 88,000 widows and children in Legacy's care, and the pipe smoking Legatee is seen driving the fatherless boy to tennis practice before the film concludes by saying that Legacy is contributing to the future of the nation. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. Eight page theatre program of 'This Will Be the Place' Melbourne Legacy Display held at the Garrick Theatre Friday 9th November 1934, 28th - 29th November 1934. The revue was conceived, written and composed by Legacy Club. It related five chapters in Victoria's history from the first 100 years following the career of a family of pioneers from 1835 through various generations. Includes the story of the play, a genealogical tree of the White family, summaries of the program including music, skits and tableau. Proceeds for welfare work among the sons and daughters of deceased soldiers. The performance on the 9th November was performed for delegates that had come to Melbourne for the annual National Conference as well as the public. A second copy was found with autograph signatures on the back cover. The postcard has a drawing of a traditional landscape of The Netherlands represented by a lake, house with mills, a boat and a child dressed in a colourful, traditional costume. The handwriten text is a letter home and describes the writer Peter's visit with his cousin. Other items addressed to Mrs Elsum are in the archive (see 00180 a postcard from 1915). This postcard has a photo of the Orange Hotel Oostkant, Soerabaia, Java taken around 1915 (now known as Surabaya in Indonesia). Perhaps the sender, Lee, was a returning serviceman from World War One coming back to Australia via Indonesia and this was a card home to his family.A record of postal correspondence in 1915. Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. The story of Herbert (Slim) Wrigley who fought in Greece in 1941 before being injured and captured. He escaped from a PoW camp near Thessaloniki and was sheltered by the Papadopoulos family in Ritini where he met Xanthoula who he ultimately married. His exploits as a partisan are detailed before he returned home to Melbourne in 1944. Xanthoula's life and family are also recorded in detail. Forming the headwaters of the Johanna River and noted for its majestic Myrtle Beech and Blackwood trees, in 1921 the property came into the possession of Mrs Jessie Fry, wife of Mr Thomas Fry, a well-known and respected local bushman and timber getter. Here the family lived and it was Mrs Fry who named the place 'Melba Gully'. Sometime in the late 1920s Mrs Fry was approached by Pioneer Tours, the bus company, to see if she would provide lunches and afternoon teas for their passengers travelling between Apollo Bay and Port Campbell. Mrs Fry rose to the challenge; the Melba Gully Luncheon Rooms were built adjoining the Fry home and she was in business. Mrs Fry was unfailing in her courtesy and kindness. She was also a splendid cook, known for her feather-light scones and sponges. Home-produced strawberries and cream were a special treat. Visitors were also taken on a tour of 'The Gully', often guided by one of her young sons. Melba Gully Visitors Book is testimony to her many satisfied customers. Tom and Jessie Fry sold the property on her retirement in 1947 and the tearooms ceased to operate. Leonard Vivian Lansell ( 16/10/1888-31/10/1963) was the son of mining magnate, George Lansell. He married Geraldine Orme in 1911. She was the daughter of a NSW grazier. Leonard was very active in Bendigo affairs, including President of the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum, the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce, The School of Mines and the Bendigo Art Gallery. He was also on the board of directors of several mines. As well as his Bendigo commitments, Leonard and Geraldine also ran the "Chah Singh" Station, near Moulamein, NSW. Resulting from this, he was appointed a pastoral inspector in 1929. After retiring to Toorak, the family was heavily involved in the Melbourne social scene. Mr. Northcott served all through the Crimean war, and obtained three service medals. He was most fortunate, as he did not even receive a scratch. While fighting in the trenches one day he happened to glance round, and was surprised to discover that his brother was by his side. They had not seen each other for a long time, and the meeting under such circumstances can be imagined. Two of his brothers, John and William, served throughout the war. At its close he came to Victoria, the gold fever being then at its height. His stay in Bendigo was brief, as the New Zealand rush attracted his attention, but he returned in 1858 to Bendigo, and as the outlook was quiet, he went back to New Zealand in 1859. Finally, in 1860, he settled in the Bendigo district with his father and mother and brother William. They took up some land at Leichardt and remained there for some years. It was about this time that he became prominent in musical circles. He came of a musical family, as his oldest brother, John, was one of the musicians to the Royal Family, and was pensioned by the late Queen Victoria. His younger brother, William, is at the present time one of the leading cornet players in the United States. In 1867 the late Mr. Northcott married Miss Lansell, sister of Mr. Geo. Lansell, her demise having taken place about three months before. When he left Leichardt, Mr. Northcott became Mr. Lansell's general manager, and continued in that capacity for 26 years. While he was manager of the 180 Mine it is estimated that gold to the value of a million sterling was taken from the mine. It is, perhaps, in his capacity as a bandsman, that Mr. Northcott was best known, as he became a familiar figure not only in the chief centres of Victoria but throughout Australia. He first became leader of the old Volunteer Band, and he was subsequently leader of the Battalion Band at Castlemaine. It was when he became leader of the musical combination known as Northcott's Brass Band that his fame and the fame of the band became widespread, as some 25 years ago it was one of the finest bands in Australia, and held that distinction for many years. Although many changes in the personnel of the band have taken place, it still retainsits old name. Mr. Northcott was a cornet player of high ability, and in 1871 he was presented by the citizens of Bendigo with a handsome silver cornet, in recognition of his services as a musician. His home contains a great array of trophies, photographic groups of bandsmen etc., which serve to indicate in a sense the reputation he enjoyed as a bandsman. During his career in Bendigo he invested in mining a good deal, but was not very fortunate in this respect, as he lost a good deal of money on the New Chum line. Naturally he was well known and warmly respected, especially by bandsmen. He was a genial citizen, and made a large circle of sincere friends. He was a member of the Zenith Lodge of Masons, having passed through the chairs twice. He was also a member of the A.O.F., and formerly a member of the School of Mines Administrative Council. It was about this time that he became prominent in musical circles. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. In the mid 1870s wealthy solicitor David Abbot bought a large block on the corner of Bamfield Street and Beach Road and built an imposing family home with a stately tower. It featured rare Hawthorn Blacks – hand-made bricks of brown-red with streaks of charcoal black. For many years the home was the most prominent in the district. In 1922 ‘Coggeshall’ was subdivided, and the house was sold to the Sandringham Club, a gentleman’s club that had formed in 1913 and required more space for its growing membership. Members enjoyed lawn tennis courts, a bowling green and a cricket green, as well as a large billiard room. Word of mouth (Half Moon Bay) 2018 is a two-panel work which is the largest painting the artist has made to date. It is a colourful and fun, light-hearted scene of an imaginative party that the artist would love to attend at Half Moon Bay in Black Rock. Depicted in the work are over 30 figures, including international tourists, family and friends of McHaffie as well as famous identities such as musicians David Bowie and Solange Knowles, and fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.
