See KVHS 0965. The 125 year old hotel was burnt down in December 2011. A popular destination for the district and visitors with many fly fishermen staying there.Mr and Mrs Crotty were the first publicans of the hotel. It had a long history providing employment, accommodation, entertainment and socialising throughout the years to the residents of the Kiewa Valley.Black and white photo glued onto thick cardboard creating a frame. August 30th, 1899 of a fatality at the St. Mungo Mine where a miner, Richard Nettle was injured when a large slab of mullock fell on him. He died later in the hospital. Two copies of document : nineteen handwritten pages of notes on 'The Rich Victoria Hill and Its Historical Association' Signed by A Richardson and dated 30 - 8 - 1971. and a typed copy of same. Notes include: Introduction, Hotels, Mines, Mining History and descriptions of features where the signposts are. Mines mentioned in the text are: North Old Chum. Ballerstedt's first open cut, Lansell's Big 180. 20 head stamper, Lansell's Cleopatra Needle, Victoria Quartz Mine. Cleopatra's Needle was a square sectioned brick chimney with this four sided pyramidal chimney top with four vents to allow the smoke to escape whatever the direction of the wind. It was demolished in the 1950's as it had a bend in it and it was considered unsafe. Lansell had two other mines with similar chimneys, the '222' in Chum Street and his 'Sandhurst' or 'Needle' mine near the Bendigo, Eaglehawk boundary. 1.Photocopy of letter dated 24/12/1914 handwritten by William Thomas Byrne of Docker's Plain whilst at training camp - 3rd light horse brigade train - to his sister. 2.Photocopy of brief summary of W.T.Byrne's life to when he was discharged in 1918 - photocopied from Docker Plains School Honor Book William Thomas BYRNE was born on 21/9/1890 at Docker Plains to William and Johanna Byrne. He was educated at Docker Plains and Wangaratta State schools. A farmer when he enlisted on 13/10/1914. He trained at Broadmeadows and embarked on Hororata on 17/4/1915. He served with the 3rd Light Horse and 12th and/or 27th ASC - Army Service Corps as a Driver. Newspaper article dated 7/11/2003 states letter was found inside second hand book and the writer of the letter identified as the uncle of local Wangaratta resident and historian Bill O'Callaghan. The letter written prior to embarking overseas was addressed to Mrs Connell Ford Street Wangaratta but intended for his sister Nora, a Nun at Brigidine Convent, Albert Park. The Kew City Hall, designed by the architect Harold Bartlett of Leith & Bartlett, was opened by The Premier The Hon HE Bolte on 23rd April 1960. At the time of the opening, Cr Ferguson was Mayor of Kew.Original image of the new Town Hall of Kew, providing a detailed view of its interior.Monochrome photograph of the interior of the new Kew City Hall, taken during a Reception given by the Mayoress of Kew in 1960. The orientation of the photograph is directed from the northern (main) stage to the auditorium. The picture reveals the original interior of the Hall before it was converted into a library in 1986-7. Notable is the wooden partition which enabled the Hall to be divided into two halves, as well as the decorative brickwork. Wodonga was declared Victoria’s first Rural City in 1973. John Macaulay was appointed to the first Council. John was born in Melbourne but moved to the Wodonga district as a teenager. During World War II he joined the infantry and served in New Guinea. After the war he took up a farm in Gundowring but due to war-related health issues, John and his wife Monica semi-retired to Wodonga in 1967. He was elected to Council in a by-election in 1973. John continued to serve on the Wodonga Council until 1991 including four terms as Mayor from 1982–1983, 1983–1994, 1987–1988 and 1990–1991.
