This book, an Irish spelling book with a strong religious tone, is in a very tattered state but has the name ‘Freckleton’ on it and it may have come with the first Freckleton immigrants to Australia. In the 19th century there were Freckleton families in the Warrnambool district at Port Fairy, Cooramook, Mailors Flat, Woolsthorpe, Woodford and Wangoom. The provenance of this book is unclear but it is kept because of its early printing (1844) and because of its association with the Freckleton families. This is a soft cover book of 240 pages. The cloth cover is brown with no visible markings on the front cover or spine. The pages are bound together with string and the material on the spine is almost worn away. Some of the pages are torn and very dirty and all are dog-eared. There is a grey and white illustration on the first page. The inscriptions on the first and second pages, barely legible, are handwritten in pencil and in black ink. ‘W. These little tins were available for soldiers to buy before embarking to the first world war. As the candles and matches are contained within the tin , it would have been a ideal way to keep both dry. The lid of the tin could also have been useful as a windshield. The tin was donated in memory of Les Lawlor. James Leslie Lawlor was born in Mepunga and lived in Warrnambool and enlisted in October 1916. He was discharged as medically unfit as he had broken his wrist three years previously and the break had failed to heal well. The tin was donated in his memory by his sister Vera Maguire This item with its link to World War 1 soldiers has historical significance to Australians in general but is also a link to a local family. This book belonged to Charity Lamerton Phillips and may have belonged to her parents before her. On the inside front cover are the names of George Phillips and Jessie Kerr, giving their marriage date and the birth dates of four of their children. Charity Lamerton Phillips (1872-1942) was the daughter of George and Jessie Phillips of Nirranda and she married Frederick Bonnett and farmed in the Mepunga district. This book is of interest because of its age and because it contains family information on the Phillips family of Nirranda. Many 19th century people recorded family information in a Bible or other old book kept in the home. This is a hard cover book of 325 pages. The cover is brown leather with some sections eroded away. The spine has gold lettering. The book contains several black and white illustrations. Some of the pages are stained and torn at the edges. Cattlemen wore coats when working with their cattle especially during the winter in the Kiewa Valley and when travelling on horses with cattle to, on and from the High Plains where they stayed for days during summer attending and mustering their cattle. The coats protected the cattlemen from harsh weather conditions including snow which sometimes fell in summer. This coat was owned and worn by Richard Marum who owned a farm in Tawonga south. He was the descendant of Kyran Marum, the stockman, who worked for Georgina Huggins. Brown leather full length coat with collar, lapel, long sleeves and buttoning up the front. The Chick brothers, Alf, Les and Allan, plus friends, began trout fishing and camping in the Kiewa Valley before the early 1930s. Les continued his connection with the Kiewa River until his death in 1972. Fingerlings were placed in the Kiewa River from the early 1880s. Keegan's Bridge is a crossing near Upper Gundowring and about 4 km south east of Dederang. References to the crossing were made in the early 1900s and a petition presented to Council in 1904 calling for a bridge.The bridge was built and opened in 1907. The photos are of the release of fingerling trout in the Kiewa River, thought to be at Keegan's Bridge. The fingerlings were transported in drums on the back of trucks. The photos are c1940s.The Kiewa Valley has been a popular spot for fishermen, tourists and campers from the 1880s. One of the many attractions has been the excellent fishing along the Kiewa River due to the regular release of fish especially brown trout. This continues to the present day (2020) when a few fish were marked with $$ signs for the lucky fisherman who caught them. Cattle grazing on the Bogong High Plains during summer commenced in the 1840s and continued for many years. The Soil Conservation Authority recorded each family's area boundaries which were updated in June 1972 and continued to be adjusted until cattle were banned in 2005. The tradition of cattle grazing continues to be controversial.Holders of grazing rights for grazing on the Bogong High Plains were allocated specific areas recorded by the Soil Conservation Authority in 1972. in 1922 Kergunyah Park homestead was built by David Wallace in the late 1800's and remained in the family until the sale in 1922 when it was bought by John Woodside (grandfather of Ewen Wallace) whose family retained it until 1938. Another family named Wallace bought the property in 1938 and this family's descendants are still running it in 2005.David and Henrietta Wallace purchased the original holding and built Kergunyah Park homestead in the late 1800's running cattle on the property. They arrived in Australia in 1867 with their 3 children and were early settlers in the district. Their descendants still live in the district. Sewing machines were used by some ladies to mend and make clothes for the family as shops were some distance away and bought clothes were much more expensive. The sewing machines were also used to sew items for fund raising e.g.. There is a long screw that fits in a hole at the top of the lid. The screw can be lifted out and used to open and take off the lid. The light, above the needle is covered by bakelite. A leather belt runs around the wheel on the right to enable the machine to run. Brass Collection Plate presented to St Paul's Anglican Church, Allansford, by the mother of Joseph & Frank Dallimore as a Memorial to the two brothers who drowned at Ryan's Den (near Cape Otway) on Jan 1st 1903. Major Joseph Dallimore (aged 32) was on leave from Sth Africa during the war and he, his wife (Beatrice Wiggs) and baby, his brother Frank Rupert Dallimore (aged 22), a farm hand Arthur Geach (aged 19) and a house maid servant, were picnicing at Ryan's Den (near Cape Otway) when the three men went walking, but never returned, all assumed drowned. One theary has it - Mrs M.E. Dallimore was picnicing at Lake Gillear beach when an enormous wave swept over the shore - (much larger than any other during that day) and rolled in all along the beach. This wave may have also reached the area where the three men were walking on the rocks and swept them into the ocean. The Worland family has played a significant role in the life of the parish for many generations. James (church warden) and Elizabeth Worland had 10 children and at least 3 sons went on to become very involved in the church, holding some form of office. Henri became Town Clerk of Warrnambool, others involved in their own business in Warrnambool. Ernest Thomas Worland the 4th child, born at Portland on Sept 30th 1877, but lived most of his life in Warrnambool. He became a church warden in 1926 and remained so for approx. 40 years and vicar's warden for approx 15 years. Ernest married Margaret White in May 1902 and they had 6 children. Ernest worked in his father's tannery and took over the business on his father's death in 1918. His trade was listed as a 'currier'. He later turned to dairying when the business was destroyed by fire. Ernest and his wife lived on the corner of Henna and Lave Sts for over 40 years. His main interest was in Christ Church. Ernest died on 27th December 1963 aged 86 years and is buried in the Warrnambool Cemetery. His wife Margaret died on 2nd December 1967 aged 92 years. On his death the Vicar of Christ Church, Rev Gordon Brown, said "Mr. Worland had an outstanding record of service with Christ Church, Warrnambool. He was utterly devoted to his church and served with distinction as vestryman, church warden, vicar's warden and synod representative." These pieces of fleece of a Lincoln sheep come from the property, Carrakoorte, in Grasmere, 13 kilometres from Warrnambool. Lincoln sheep are a large British breed producing strong, heavy wool. Carrakoorte was established in the 1850s and the Manifold family members were the owners in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1886 William Henderson, a dairy farmer and cheese maker, became the manager of Carrakoorte. He purchased the property in 1911 and the Henderson family retained the property until 2012 when the owner, Jim Henderson died. Carrakoorte was renowned for the breeding of Ayrshire Stud Dairy Cattle. This is a framed photograph of a large group of people at a wedding reception in April 1910. The occasion was the marriage of Mary Lee of Wangoom and Patrick O'Keefe, also of Wangoom. The wedding took place at St. Joseph's Church, Warrnambool and the reception was held at the property of St. Mary's at Wangoom which had been held by the Lee family since the late 1850s.Two marquees were erected to cater for over 400 guests and the hospitality included midday dinner, afternoon tea, high tea and supper. The Temperance Band provided the afternoon music. The brush in this case could have been used as a hair brush or a clothes brush. It is enclosed in a leather case and was probably an item made for travellers. The brush and case belonged to George Tomlinson of Ballangeich. Ballangeich is a small settlement on the Hopkins Highway about 27 kilometres from Warrambool. George Tomlinson’s grandfather, William Tomlinson , established a farming property at Ballangeich in 1865 and opened a hotel, ‘Half Way House’ on part of the land. George Tomlinson’s father, also William, continued to farm in the area and was known as a fine judge of cattle and sheep. This case and brush are of interest as an example of the brushes men used in the mid 20th century. The items are also of interest as they belonged to a member of a well-known Ballangeich family (Tomlinsons).1 This is a piece of brown leather rolled over and stitched with yellow thread to form a container or case. This ledger is a Warrnambool Swintons Store stock book and contains the sales of stock from September 1869 to an unknown date (perhaps to the end of 1870) and entries for 1871, 1872 and 1873, 1889, the 1890s and some dates early in the 20th century. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool selling groceries, glassware and china. In 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch shops were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, South Warrnambool and West Warrnambool. When William died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split in two with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, hardware and produce. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This ledger is very important as an early memento of the Swinton Stores in Warrnambool.
