This school text book was written by John James Burston. He was the son of David and Sarah Burston of Warrnambool. Both his father and his brother Benjamin taught in schools in the Warrnambool area. John Burston was at Mepunga and Woodford schools before leaving in 1871 to be the Master of the Anglican School at Creswick. He then became the head teacher at schools in Ballarat and Bendigo before going to the Brighton Road State School in St. Kilda. He spent 16½ years there before retiring in 1911. Burston was a well-known writer of school text books, including The State School Arithmetic, The State School Grammar and Exercises in Practice and Proportion. The name ‘Ruttledge’ may have no local significance thought the name ‘Rutledge’ is important in our history, commencing with William Rutledge who purchased the Farnham Special Survey in the 1840s( Tower Hill to Dennington). The name ‘Swinton’ is prominent in our history. Mrs John Swinton (Charlotte Scott nee Dunn, 1871-1944) was married to John Swinton, the son of William and Ann Swinton who came to Warrnambool in 1854. William established a store in Timor Street in the 1850s and opened branches of this store in several local towns. The Swinton family still has commercial interests in Timor Street. This book is of interest because it belonged to Charlotte Swinton, a member of the Swinton family important in Warrnambool’s commercial and community history. This book has been in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for many years and little is known of its origins. ‘Anne Watson’ may be Annie Watson, nee Grant (1830-1906), the wife of John Watson who came to Victoria in 1855 and had a farm in the Cudgee area. There is a reference to a ‘G. Geary’ as a member of the Belfast (Port Fairy) Choral Society in 1860. This is an early memento of settlers in the Warrnambool area and their religious adherence and, as such, is of some interest. This is a hard cover book of 391 pages. This book was written by Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a famous and influential English Protestant preacher who attracted a great following in the 19th century, not only in England, but throughout the British Empire and U.S.A. He reached the masses by producing many religious tracts, costing one penny, and publishing his sermons and his John Ploughman books with their simple homilies. These books were sub-titled ‘Plain Talk for Plain People’ with the copy we have being the second in the series labelled ‘140th thousand’ and published in 1892, the year of Spurgeon’s death. It appears that Spurgeon’s books were in many a home in Warrnambool in the 19th century. This book is of great interest as one which was familiar to many residents of Warrnambool and district in the 19th century. Charles Spurgeon was apparently widely known to Warrnambool residents in the 19th century. The Warrnambool Examiner newspaper frequently carried news items about Spurgeon’s eloquent preaching and the crowds he was drawing. It also published some of his sermons from time to time and reported at length his final illness and death. One of the unidentified photograph albums in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society contains a photograph of Charles Spurgeon and his wife. This is a school reader used in the 1890s by Maggie Glasgow at Wangoom State School. This school opened in 1865 on the Warrnambool/ Wangoom Road as a Common School but it is now closed. Maggie Glasgow is probably Margaret Glasgow (1880-1954), the daughter of John and Esther Glasgow who were dairy farmers and cheese makers at Blackwood Hill, Wangoom. Jean Glasgow was the daughter of William and Isabella Glasgow who lived in the same area. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has in its collection examples of the Glasgow butter moulds. This book is of interest as an early school reader for Victorian children. Used in the 1890s this book has some Australian content. The Glasgow children that used this book are members of the Glasgow families important at the turn of the 19th century as cheese makers in the Warrnambool district. This is a hard cover book of 400 pages. Several pages are missing. The cover is dark blue with ornamental patterning on the front and embossed lettering. This boot belonged to Thomas Rome and may have been either an apprentice’s model or a display item in his boot and shoe shop or both. Thomas James Rome (1873-1974) worked in John Younger’s store in Beechworth before both came to Warrnambool in 1888. Rome worked in Younger’s store in Liebig Street, Warrnambool for 17 years and then established his own boot and shoe store at 115 Liebig Street in 1907, retiring in 1962. He married Amelia Saltau and they lived at Murweh at the corner of Liebig and Princess Streets, Warrnambool. Thomas Rome is mostly remembered today for his purchase and use of an Edison phonograph machine in the late 1890s and the sound recordings he made with this machine at the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. These recordings were found intact after Rome’s death and are regarded as the earliest sound recordings still surviving in Australia today. This sample boot is of great significant as an example of the bootmaker’s art in the early 20th century and as a memento of Thomas Rome, important in Warrnambool’s history as a businessman and in the history of sound recording in Australia. This is a small sample black leather boot (probably a lady’s boot). It has double ridged stitching across the instep with a soft leather upper part and stitching separating the soft leather section from the smooth leather. The right side of the boot has seven button holes and seven buttons attached with metal clips. This book belonged to John B. Murray and he gave it to Miss Jessie Sandison on their wedding day. It appears that they lived in Scotland. The handwritten family information reveals that George Sinclair married Janet Swanson in 1825 and one daughter, Ann, married George Sandison in 1859. Their child, Jessie Sandison, was born in 1865 and married John B. Murray on 19th April 1888. The births of four Murray children are recorded in the Bible – Annie, John, George and Maggie. The husband, John B. Murray, died in 1916 and Jessie died in 1925. This Bible is both of antiquarian interest and also of interest regarding the connection with the Sandison/ Murray families. But so far there is nothing to link these families with the Warrnambool area. So the item at this stage remains useful only for display. This is a black leather-covered book. The cover is extended at the edges to partially enclose the pages which are gilt-edged. The cover has embossed decorative patterns and the spine has gold lettering. This book was awarded in 1884 to Bessie McMahon from the Warrnambool State School. The teacher was Bella Davidson. Warrnambool State School No. 1743 in Jamieson Street, Warrnambool, was opened in 1876 and is still open today. Elizabeth Mary (Bessie) McMahon was the daughter of William and Mary McMahon of Glenrye, Warrnambool. Her father was a Warrnambool lawyer. Bessie McMahon married John Clarke of Garvoc. Isabella (Bella) Davidson was the daughter of John and Isabella Davidson of Rosebank near Woodford. She became a well-known teacher in Warrnambool, commencing as a pupil teacher in the Warrnambool National School (later Common School 646) and moving to the Warrnambool State School in Jamieson Street when it opened. She resigned in 1886 to open a private school in Koroit Street (known as Ellerslie College) and continued as the proprietor and Head Teacher until 1891. This book is of considerable importance because of its association with the Warrnambool State School early in its existence, with Bella Davidson, a noted Warrnambool educationalist of the 19th century and with Bessie McMahon, a member of a prominent family in 19th century Warrnambool.This is a hard cover book of 310 pages. The Davidson brothers, James and John, were pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool district, with John establishing th property of Rosebrook in Woodford and James establishing the homestead of Woodend in West Warrnambool. Another brother William was an early storekeeper in Woolsthorpe. He died in 1904 and may be the W. Davidson who was the recipient of this book. The Midgleys came to the Yangery Creek area in 1852 and established the property of Yangery Grange. Mrs Midgley presumably belonged to one of these families from pioneer times. Ethel Davidson would be a descendant of one of the Davidson families but there were several women with this name born in the 19th century though one born to a William Davidson in 1887 may be the later owner of this book. This book is of interest because of its connection to members of the Davidson families – pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool area.This is a hard cover book of 461 pages. This book was given in 1943 by the Warrnambool Technical School to Joyce Goodall. Considering that World War Two was in progress at the time, the book was an expensive one to be given as a school prize. But the donor was Miss Florence Lake, the daughter of John and Annie Lake and the step-daughter of George Rolfe of Lyndoch, near the Hopkins River mouth. Miss Lake inherited the property and built the residence known as Lyndoch that is today part of the Lyndoch Aged Care Facility. Miss Lake was known for her philanthropy and community work in Warrnambool. John King’s name has been crossed out in the book as he was no longer Principal in 1943. He was the founding principal of Warrnambool Technical School in 1911 and remained there for 29 years. The Goodall family established Wanstead Farm in East Warrnambool in the 19th century and Joyce Goodall was descended from the Mortlake branch of that family.This book is of interest because of its association in 1943 with Joyce Goodall, Florence Lake and Warrnambool Technical School. This book belonged to John Cowtan. He was a purchaser of land near Cassady’s Bridge in Warrnambool and an important and early settler in Port Fairy. The land that John Cowtan selected was bought by Williaam Cassady whose sister, Ann, was married to John Cowtan. Cassady established the property, Boughton where Cassady’s Bridge is today. This book came from a Cassady estate sale early in the 21st century. Between 1839 and 1844 John Cowtan was a ship’s captain for John Griffiths, a shipowner and entrepreneur. In 1844 Cowtan established a merchant trading and produce business in Port Fairy with John Bland. In the 1860 John Cowtan went to live in Melbourne.This book is of great interest because of its early date (one year after the founding of Warrnambool) and because of its association with John Cowtan, a pioneer settler of Port Fairy with connections to Warrnambool.This is a brown leather cover book of 385 pages. The spine has gold lettering. The binding has come apart and has been mended with white cotton material on the inside of the cover. The insides of the cover have a brown, white, blue and yellow mottled pattern. The cover is stained and torn at the edges and has a deep gouging on the front. The first page has been torn and mended with tape and some of the pages are stained. There are two pressed fern fronds, one loose newspaper cutting and a bookmark with a sepia-coloured image, lace paper edges and coloured embroidery contained within the pages. This Bible was owned by John Glasgow, a Wangoom farmer. His father, Robert, settled in Blackwood Hill near Wangoom in the 1850s. John Glasgow was a celebrated cheesemaker who won many prizes locally and overseas and a Warrnambool Shire Councillor from 1880 to 1886 and from 1892 to 1906. He was a Sunday School teacher at the Wangoom Presbyterian Church for 50 years and an Elder for 42 years. The book contains the names and birth dates of the extended Glasgow family and the names include Linnett, Glasgow, Coulstock and Anderson.This Bible is of considerable interest because of its connection to the John Glasgow and other members of his family. This is a leather-covered book with gold lettering on the spine. The cover overlaps the pages for extra protection. The pages are gilt-edged. One page has come apart from the binding and several other pages are partly detached from the spine. All the inscriptions are hand-written in black ink. One is a religious verse which has been pasted on to the inside of the front cover and on another page are listed the names and birth dates of 18 members of the Glasgow extended family. John Glass Cramond 1829 and James Dickson 1831-1910 were founders of a large drapery store. Both were Scots and both came separately to Australia in 1852. Cramond initially came for gold but soon opened a store in St Kilda with a post Office attached and he was the first post master there. Dickson was a farmer’s son but became a draper and while he was unsuccessful on the Bendigo diggings and then returned to Melbourne where he met Cramond and soon after they opened a store on Lonsdale Street. They opened their business in Warrnambool in 1855 as a general store with groceries, drapery and ironmongery. Both partners were involved with the community and James Dickson was an original director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill 1909 and the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. He also served on the committee of management of Warrnambool Base Hospital. The business in the late 1970's. This shape preserver would have been an item given to customers to maintain their tie in good condition. This book has been given to John Ardlie by Lewis Gilles in 1866. John Martin Ardlie came to Warrnambool in 1852 as the Clerk of Courts and remained in this position until 1868. He died in 1872. He was a leading figure in community affairs for twenty years and Ardlie Street in Warrnambool is named after him. His family home was Wyton, site of the old convent at Emmanuel College today. Lewis Gilles, important in the early history of Tasmania as a bank owner and breeder of cattle, came to Warrnambool in 1854 as the first resident Police Magistrate. He remained until 1866 when he went to England (the occasion of his presentation of this book to John Ardlie). He died in 1884 in South Australia. Gilles Street in Warrnambool is named after him.This book is of high significance because of its connection to two very important early residents of Warrnambool – John Ardlie and Lewis Gilles. This plate has been produced by the English firm of W.H.Grindley for use at the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool. The Criterion Hotel was on the western side of Kepler Street near Lava Street and was established in 1872 with the first licensee being John Tate. The hotel closed in 2008, was partially destroyed by fire in 2010 and was demolished in 2013. The Humm family had a long association with the Criterion Hotel with George Humm of Woodford taking over as licensee in 1882, buying the hotel in 1887 and remaining there until his death in 1894. George Humm’s widow, Elizabeth, was the licensee from 1894 to 1907, her son, John, was the licensee from 1907 to 1916 and his widow, Bridget, was the licensee from 1916 to 1919. The plate could have been in use for all or part of these years but is most likely to have been bought early in the 20th century. This plate is of considerable interest because it came from the Criterion Hotel, a prominent hotel in Warrnambool for over 130 years. This is a white china plate which has been broken into three pieces and inexpertly mended. The plate is much stained. It has a red embedded stamp in the shape of a belt (the maker’s trademark) on the front and on the back it has the blue markings of the maker with an image of a crown. This is a coat hanger made in Germany for the Warrnambool firm of Cramond and Dickson. John Cramond and James Dickson opened a general store in Warrnambool in 1856, selling men’s and women’s clothing, drapery and manchester and it had its own tailoring and millinery business. This store became a prominent one in Warrnambool for over 100 years, closing in 1973. The business operated for most of this time at the corner of Timor and Liebig Streets. This coat hanger is of great interest as a memento of the business of Cramond and Dickson, one of the most important businesses in Warrnambool’s history.This is a wooden coat hanger with a metal hook inserted in the centre of the hanger. The wood has been smoothed and stained to a light brown colour. The wood is curved and the ends are slightly tapered. The hook has a round stud at the bottom to prevent the hook from coming out of the hole. The hook is somewhat rusted. This book contains the Constitutions of the Freemason Lodges in Victoria. Freemasonry is a world-wide benefit society. Moves were made in the 1860s to establish a Masonic Lodge in Warrnambool with the first Lodge being St. John’s (No. 895). The Masonic Hall in Kepler Street was built in 1870. This book belonged to a member of the Flaxman family and John Flaxman was a prominent Warrnambool resident in the 19th century – an insurance agent and moneylender in the 1860 and 70s and an employee of the auctioneer, Samuel Macgregor. The book, however, seems to belong to a W. Flaxman. John Flaxman had a brother William but, as far as can be ascertained, he did not live in Warrnambool. There is nothing known so far to link this book with Warrnaambool but it is kept because of the name ‘Flaxman’ and so it may have some relevance.This is hard cover book of 142 pages. This booklet has been produced in April 1902 for the Government of Victoria under the direction of the Minister for Agriculture, Hon John Morrissey M.L.A. It contains articles on agriculture in Victoria, including the dairying industry in the Western District. This journal is of some interest because of the photographs and information on dairying in the Western District in the early 20th century, including dairy inspection, milking controls in Koroit, prize-winning cows at Koroit and dairy bacteriology. This is a soft cover booklet of 102 pages - pages 350 to 452 of Part 4 of a journal published regularly (monthly?). The back cover is missing. The front cover is black and white and has an inset of a photograph showing wheat harvesting. The booklet is bound with cotton thread and shows rust where the thread is tied, perhaps from metal staples now removed. The cover has a slight tear and there is some staining throughout the pages. This is an early map of the Borough of Warrnambool (1872/3) showing the central town area of Warrnambool and the surrounding district. Reserves, public buildings and some businesses are marked. The map was photolithographed by John Noone, a Melbourne artist and photographer who claimed in 1858 to have the oldest-existing photographic studio in Melbourne. Photolithography was a process first developed in Melbourne. For several years Noone was the official photographer for the Victorian Crown Lands Office and for the Victorian Public Library and Museum. The map has the stamp of the seller of the map – Charles Hider, the well-known stationer and bookseller in Timor Street, Warrnambool. The owner of the map, Henry George Marfell, (1883-1962) was the son of John and Mary Ann Marfell. The Marfells were well-known in Warrnambool as grain merchants and managers of the Warrnambool Co-Operative Milling Company. It is surmised from the writing on the Marfell label that this map was at some stage given by Henry Marfell to the old Warrnambool MuseumThis map of early Warrnambool is of considerable significance, firstly because its original state and early date (1873) make it of antiquarian and historical interest. At the top it is attached by nails to a piece of wood and at the top it has a cloth ring for hanging the map. The map is in black shadings on a yellow background. The map is badly creased and coming away from the cloth at the edges and at other various points. There is some red or pink marking or staining on the township area of the map (originally the sold lands on this map were coloured in brown and the reserves, buildings, etc in pink). This book of verses has been written by Ethel Lucy Newcombe (nee Forrester) The daughter of Lucy Sorrell and James William Forrester, she was born in 1874 in Warrnambool. As a Matriculated student she taught at the Warrnambool St. John’s Hall Private School for Girls in the 1890s. The proprietor of this school was her friend, Grace Newcombe and Ethel Forrester, especially talented in literature and music, composed a Cantata, ‘Austral’s Sunny Year’ for the annual school concert in 1898. In 1902 Ethel Forrester married Dr Frederick Newcombe (Grace’s brother), a medical missionary in India. His father Ebenezer Newcombe was well-known in Warrnambool as a timber and hardware businessman. Dr Frederick Newcombe died in India in 1905 and Ethel Newcombe spent the greater part of her later life in Melbourne. She died in 1971. The identity of Arthur, the recipient of the book, is not known. This book is of considerable interest because it was written by Ethel Newcombe who was born and educated in Warrnambool and the book is thus is associated with both the Forrester and the Newcombe families in Warrnambool early in the 20th century This is a soft cover book of 32 pages. The cover is dark orange in colour and has dark blue lettering on the front cover with ornamental scroll work on the left margin of the front cover. The book has three blue stamps of the Warrnambool & District Historical Society and the inscription on the first page is handwritten in black ink. This small book, a prize given to George Powell in 1891, is believed to have come from the Warrnambool South State School. The signature in the book is that of John Sloss and he was the first Head Teacher of Warrnambool South State School which opened in 1877 and closed in 1995. The Powell families were in business in Warrnambool in the 1890s and the recipient of the prize may have been George Powell who was born in Warrnambool to George and Kate Powell in 1878. This book is of considerable interest because it appears to have been a prize awarded by Warrnambool South State School in 1891. The book is one of the few items we have connected to the early years of the Warrnambool South School. The book is a mixture of fact and fiction and the stories are meant to be instructive as well as entertaining.This is a hard cover book of 62 pages. The cover, dark green with a coloured floral pattern on the front and back, has been partly detached from its cloth binding. The book has several black and white sketches, with some pages missing at the beginning of the book. There are advertisements for other books on the inside of the covers. The pages and the cover are much stained. This book was printed to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, 1887 (50th anniversary of her Coronation as Queen of England). John Markman is most likely the father or grandfather of Mary Snell (nee Markman). Mrs Snell was a teacher in Warrnambool and an active member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in its early years. She wrote the first book on the origin of street names in Warrnambool. Allendale is a small settlement in the Hepburn area of Victoria. This book is of minor interest as a memento of Queen Victoria’s 1887 Jubilee and as a book that appears to have come to the Historical Society via an early member, Mary Snell (nee Markman). This is a book of 240 pages. It has a black cover with the imprint on the front cover of a crown and shield and the words ‘The Queen’s Jubilee, 1887, Victoria’ and on the back cover a circular scroll with the words, ‘British and Foreign Bible Society, New Testament’. The cover has been bound with black tape and adhesive tape but the binding has come apart. This booklet is a souvenir of St. John’s Young Women’s Association (St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Spence Street, Warrnambool) and was printed about 1910. It contains the favourite sayings or quotations of over 200 people living in the Warrnambool district at the time. A young women’s group commenced at St. John’s in 1892 and church groups for both young men and young men were well-organized and popular in the 20th century. It is presumed that the booklet was sold as a fund raiser for the youth group. The identity of ‘C.McLaren’ is not known. This booklet is significant because it contains not only the names of over 200 people living in the district at the time but also their contributions to the booklet. These contributions give us some small insight into the philosophies of these people when we study the quotations they chose to contribute. The contributors include the well-known names of Younger, Forrester, Tyers, Mainland, Dickson, Davidson, Swinton, Goodall, Battarbee, Salamy, Shaddock, Newcombe and Uebergang This is soft cover booklet of 40 pages (the pages are not numbered). The cream-coloured cover overlaps the printed pages. The front cover has black printing and two black scrolls at the top and bottom of the cover. This book contains poems written by Lindsay Russell. This was the pen name of Ethel Stonehouse (1883-1964) who was born in Nhill, Victoria and published verse, short stories and novels. She gained a national reputation for her novels, many of which were controversial at the time, dealing with rebellious women and they were often critical of some aspects of the Catholic Church. Her first novel, ‘Smouldering Fires’ sold 100,000 copies in Australia alone. In 1914 Ethel Stonehouse married Dr John Scott and came to live in Mortlake, Victoria. ‘The Caravan of Dreams’ was her last publication. This book is of considerable significance as a book of original poems by Lindsay Russell, an Australian author who lived in the local area (Mortlake). The book was printed at the Terang Express newspaper office in 1923. This is a soft cover book of 32 pages. This book belonged to Agnes Swinton (b.1900). She was the daughter of John and Charlotte Swinton of Warrnambool. Her father, John, was the fifth son of William and Ann Swinton who came to Warrnambool in 1854 and established a store in Timor Street. The Swinton family still operates a commercial business in the same street and the name ‘Swinton’ is well-known in Warrnambool. Agnes’ sister, Doris had a distinguished military career in World War Two and was a long-term Matron of the Warrnambool Hospital. This book is of considerable interest as it belonged to a member of the Swinton family which has been connected with Warrnambool’s history since the 1850s. This is a leather-covered book of 216 pages, plus a Supplement of 12 pages. The text is printed in two columns to a page. The front cover has gold lettering printed into the leather. This book was a prize awarded to Miss Middleton, a pupil at Ormiston House College, East Melbourne in 1887. The Principals of the school were the Misses Singleton and their father, Dr John Singleton was a practising doctor in Warrnambool from 1860 to 1865. He had an important influence on Warrnambool, establishing several Total Abstinence Societies and campaigning for improved health conditions for pastoral workers in the district and the aborigines at Framlingham. In Melbourne Dr Singleton and his wife worked tirelessly for the underprivileged. He established many institutions for the less fortunate, including the Prisoners’ Aid Society, the Children’s Hospital, lending libraries, cottages for widows, shelters for homeless men and women, a society for the protection of animals and the Collingwood Free Medical Dispensary. He died in 1891 at Ormiston House, his daughters’ school and home. It is not known which of the Singleton daughters ran the school and no information has been found on Miss Middleton. This book is of considerable interest as it has a close connection to Dr John Singleton, important not only in the social history of Melbourne but also in the history of Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 160 pages with 16 pages at the back of the book of advertisements for other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is brown with a sketch of a young man and lettering in gold and an ornamental floral pattern on the front cover. The gold lettering and the ornamental floral pattern are also on the spine. The book has 13 chapters with ornamental scrolls and initials at the beginning and end of each chapter. There are also some full page black and white sketches in the book, with the one at the front of the book covered by a piece of tissue paper. The book plate at the front of the book is white with a gold border pasted onto the page and handwritten details have been added in black ink.
