The photograph was taken at an Ithacan Club picnic some time during the late 1930s. Races have always been a popular feature of the picnic. The then president, Andreas Papadopoulos is congratulating the three place-getters, from L-R unknown, unknown, Hector Anagnostatos (Andrews). Andreas Papadopoulos was president from 1934 - 1939. Photograph of a painting by Mrs Fonce Kerr that was donated to Legacy. It was exhibited at the Legacy Widows' Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1995. The article mentions Mrs Kerr was the ex-President of the Waverley Legacy Widows' Club. 'The picture is titled "Daddy's Home" and depicts the lower half of a serviceman dressed in khaki trousers and combat boots. Hugging his leg is a little girl in a blue dress. Words really don't describe the situation - seeing is better. It is a nostalgic depiction of considerable meaning to all members of our Legacy family - widows, dependents and Legatees. The mine was an important gold resource and was typically mined using a method known as hydraulic sluicing whereby high powered water jets are used to dislodge rock or move sediment. The remaining water sediment slurry is directed through sluice boxes to remove the gold. The Beechworth mining district was one of six mining districts established by the governor-in-council on 4th of January 1858 under the provisions of An Act for Amending the Laws Relating to the Goldfields (21 Vic no. 32). This photograph shows historic and research value into the historical methods of hydraulic sluicing in the Beechworth mining disctrict. It also shows the evolution of the mining methods and has potential for understanding future engineering endeavors in the context of victorian mine goldfields. Alexander Wright was killed whilst performing at the Birmingham Empire as the result of a German air Attack in October 1940. The theatre had a direct hit. The stage name of Alex Wright was 'Navarre' "Prince of Mimics". According to Frank Wright Alex was a great impersonator with a unique range Bass - tenor with many accents (not unlike Peter Dawson) "AUSTRALIAN KILLED An Australian, Alexander Wright, radio variety star, who toured Europe and Australia under the pseudonym of Navarre, was killed during a recent air raid in a Midland . town. His broth-er, Frank Wright, is musical director for the London County council."(Border Morning Mail, 22 Oct 1940) Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. All are dressed in hats, waistcoat, trousers and shirts. The railway line passes through thick bush. 'Narrow Gauge Rly. Gembrook' is printed at the bottom right corner. The original postcard has three patches where the surface is missing.

Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.1).
