Has been fitted with a coin dispenser (screw and bolted in) for six different coins (50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c, and 1c). Coin holder plastic - blue base, white top with red coin supports or bases and metal springs. Bag sewn with some rivets. On rear of bag, at top, stitching has been redone using copper wire.) Slide: MEMS FROM THE MOUNT (From the special correspondent) I mention the following circumstance with the sincerest pleasure, as showing in a strong light the nature of the class of men we have around us as diggers. A poor fellow lately arrived on the diggings of the name of John Jones became ill of a rheumatic fever this week. Having no money to obtain medical assistance, and being unable to work, he was, of course, in a sad dilemma; however, a neighbour came over to me to draw up a subscription paper for the poor man, stating his distress. Next day at noon the same man came back and told me that he had collected 16 pounds 1shilling and sixpence among his neighbours for Jones and had also obtained an order to get him into the Melbourne Hospital; so the invalid went down to Melbourne I a cart this morning. Historical information - RECHABITES - The Star of Kew Tent, No. 260. This branch of the Independent Order of Rechabites was founded in September, 1882, when the following members were installed as the first officers by the district officers, viz. Chief Ruler, Bro. W. H. Bardwell; Deputy Ruler, Bro. C. Viney; Past Chief Ruler, Bro. J. V. Morgan; Treasurer, Bro. R. Eyre; Money Steward, Bro. A. Brown; Levite, Bro. W. H. Richardson; Guardian, Bro. J. Wathen; Secretary, Bro. T. J. Eaton. Bros. W. H. Bardwell, T. J. Eaton, and F. J. Legge were appointed as trustees. It is interesting to note that three of the foundation members, Messrs. Bardwell, Eaton, and Richardson, and still members of the tent. The first meetings were held in the Mission Hall, but for many years the meeting place of the tent has been the Kew Town Hall. The funds of the tent have gradually accumulated until at the last audit they amounted to £2,097. For many years past the interest on the funds has been more than sufficient to meet all claims for sick pay. The total membership is now 140. The following past secretaries have been mainly instrumental in placing the tent in its present position:-Bros. T. J. Eaton, W. H. Bardwell, C. B. Gray, and C. L. Churcher. The present officers are :- C.R., Bro. R. M. Jones; D.R., Bro. T. H. B. Williams; P.C.R., Bro. C. H. Green; Treasurer, Bro. W. J. Thornton; Secretary, Bro. F. C. W. Hurrell. Junior Branch. A junior branch was founded in 1883, and while its membership has fluctuated considerably according to the enthusiasm of the management, it has been the means of introducing many members to the senior tent. Its membership is now 41. Female Branch. Lily of Kew Tent, No. 20. This branch was formed in October, 1904, and has accomplished good work. Its membership is 38. Much of its success is due to the untiring energy of its secretary, Mrs. J Jaycock. The items in the collection have social and spiritual significance and are also historically significant. Items such as this coloured lithograph have a degree of artistic and aesthetic significance as representative examples of the certificate designers art in the 19th Century. A certificate awarded to W. H. Richardson (the father of the historian Dorothy Rogers) by the ‘Juvenile Tent No.157 in appreciation of his role as ‘Superintendent’. The certificate notes that 1887 was the fourth anniversary of the Juvenile Tent. The Star of Kew Tent No. 260 had been formed in 1882 as a branch of the Independent Order of Rechabites. W. H. " An important decision was made by the board in May last 1927 to form a Central Auxiliary with representatives from each Municipality. It has long been felt that such an Auxiliary would bring the work of the Institute more prominetly under the notice of the public and assist in finding the large sum required each year to carry on. A meeting was accoringly called for the purpose and an auxilirary formed. A strong committee was elected with Mrs James Angus as President. Mr James Angus Vice- President of the Institute was appointed by the Board of Management as Chairman of the Auxiliary." From RVIB Annual Report 1927. This collection includes Annual reports for 1966, 1969 -1970, 1973 - 1974, 1976 - 1977, 1978- 1979 and 1980 - 1981 and an incomplete lists of 10 - 25 years service badge Auxiliary members and Life Governors. The Auxiliary members did not only raise money they also raised awareness of the services provided by RVIB and worked closely with the Public Relations/Fundraising departments. Trudy Westh from Camberwell in Melbourne was recognised with a medal of the Order of Australia OAM . Mrs Westh finished her 18 year term as President of the Council of Auxiliaries in 2004. Falls Creek Primary School Prior to 1965, couples with small children would move away from Falls Creek due to there being no school facilities in the village. In the mid 60's a few families with school age children established themselves in the village, and a need arose for a school to encourage them to stay. An enrolment of seven children and a building was required before the Education Department could become involved. The Management Committee of the day gifted the families some land (still the site of the Falls Creek Primary School No. 5067) and fundraising began. The original committee consisted of the Steven family (two children), the Lee family (three children), the Caddie family (no children), the Carroll family (no children), and the Alston family (children?). After two years of community based, yet dubious fundraising methods (including weekly gluhwein parties, keg parties and numerous raffles), enough money ($1,300) was raised and an unused SEC building in Mt Beauty was bid on and won. Due to the condition of the road up to Falls Creek, it had to be dismantled and reassembled up the mountain. Unfortunately, the building was delivered to Falls Creek too late into the season to be erected but the following summer, with no money available to hire builders, working bees began, beer was on tap, and BBQs were cooked, and a crude schoolroom with an oil heater donated by Cecil Dobson from Winterhaven was erected. The first teacher hired was an Alaskan woman who agreed to a wage of $10 per child per week. Due to minimal resources the children were sent home at different times of the day in order to warm up and have a meal. Through the winter of 1971 many government departments were lobbied and it was decided that if the building could be finished to the Education Departments standards then they would provide a government endorsed full time teacher. The three main site holders (Bob Lee, Cecil Dobson and Dick Humphries) took out a loan and the school was refurbished and opened as the 'Bob Scott Memorial Hall' in time for the 1972 season. Maree Keele was the first Head Teacher. After three years of fund raising by the school committee the hall was paid off in full. After many years in the original building the Education Department took control of the school, updated the classrooms and provided accommodation for the teachers. In 1982, discussions began surrounding construction of a 'new' Falls Creek Primary School, a joint property with the community and the Education Department. Organisations such as 'Friendly Societies' were set up to protect and care for their members and communities at a time when there was no welfare state or National Health Service. The aim was and still is, to provide help to members and communities when they need it. The friendly societies are non-profit mutual organisations owned by their members. All income is passed back to the members in the form of services and benefits. Translated copy, dated 25 and 28 January 77. Translation refers to the acknowledgement of the receipt of £13.10/- sick pay from the Bendigo German Club and Court of Foresters. Enclosed Doctor's certificate for Mr. Moeckelmann. Because Detlef Moeckelmann was blind, and his sense of hearing was getting gradually weaker, and his old mother had continuous illness, and it was hoped that the German Club and Court King of the Forest could do a little extra for him. The German Club were not in favor of granting extra assistance for an indefinite period. The German Club voted the money, which was dispatched by the next mail. Mr. Detlef Moeckelmann lost his eyesight through an explosion of gunpowder.
