The 8th Light Horse was formed in 1903 from Victorian Mounted Rifles companies in North East Victoria with Headquarters at Benalla. In 1912 the regiment was renumbered 16th Light Horse. In 1920 the title reverted to 8th Light Horse with the territorial title Indi Light Horse. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. As Japanese threat to the mainland declined the regiment was disbanded. Large silver trophy cup with handles and mesh cover mounted on a bakelite base. Card to record contributions to the J. L. Williams Memorial Scholarship fund. The fund was established in the memory of Jack Williams, who was a teacher at the St Kilda School on Brighton Road for 24 years. Contributions were sought towards raising about 350 pounds to establish a perpetual scholarship awarded annually to a pupil of the school. Jack Williams is also remembered through the J. L. Williams Medal, first issued in 1931 by the Australian State/Secondary Schools' National Football Council (now awarded by School Sport Australia), in recognition of his efforts to establish what is now known as the School Sport Australia Championship. The “Axe Handle” awards originated in 1988, when WO2 Zachary Reark (CSM B Coy and son of famed Old Mentonian, Jim Reark) found an old axe handle in the bush at the end of the 1988 annual Cadet camp. This he proudly marched out of camp with, under arm, in the manner of one bearing a pace stick. This idea seemed to catch on with the then CO, LTCOL Tony Drinan who decided that each CSM would be issued with one of these as a “perpetual trophy” marking his promotion to the rank of WO2 and appointment as a CSM. The name of the recipient was duly engraved on a plate affixed to the handle. The Archive Centre holds about 12 such axes as well as this original.

According to the school history 'The lamp burns brightly' a special committee of the school ouncil were appointed to organise a great fete in August 1922 to raise money towards the purchase of new property in Webster/Mair Streets. "The Oriental Fair transformed the Ballarat City Hall for three consecutive days. Stalls of many types were heavily laded, and, as one reveller commented, 'The perpetual motion of the fairty floss machine, producing its quaint confection, was an object of interest and wonderment to many, and the crack of the pea rifle in the adjoining shooting gallery almost dispersed the feathery flakes of fairy floss as they issued from the magic machine'. An arochestra provided continuous music, varied at times by vocal solos, eurythmic displays and other enterainments. the fair raised the remarkable sum of 1,576 pounds." 1986: 7-9 November. New Banner, Ben Hall coach and vintage cars The 1986 festival was held from 7th to 9th November with the parade will be held at noon on Saturday, November 8th. The "float" consisted of Ben Hall's Cobb & Co. coach and several vintage motor vehicles. Society members were dressed in Victorian era for those riding in the coach and 1920s fashion for those in the motor vehicles. A further feature of the parade was the use of the Society banner which had been created that year. The Society's entry in the Eltham Community Festival parade included Ben Hall's Cobb and Co. coach and was awarded the major prize for the parade. This involved the presentation of a perpetual trophy which the Society held for one year. However, it was the last time the trophy was awarded and remains in the Society's collection. The trophy was replaced in 1987 with a Best Display award which again was won by the Society, and again in 1988. Portrait of Hans and Letitia Hecht with a description of the Trust they founded. Between them is a page outlining the work of the Trust they established. The description reads: "H. & L. Hecht Trust. Thanks for Sharing Our Vision. The Association for the Blind thanks the H. & L. Hecht Trust for their generous support of our Western Metropolitan Regional Low Vision Clinic. The trust was established by the late Hans Hecht, an immigrant from Germany who arrived in Australia in 1900. He married Letitia Robinson in 1911. A successful importer and manufacturer, he set up the H. & L. Hecht Trust to give something back to the community for the help he and his wife had received. Hans Hecht died in Melbourne in 1965, aged 84. Letitia died two years later aged 87. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. At the Graduation of each group of students a dinner was held and Awards were presented. These were perpetual Awards and the name and year was engraved on the small brass plate. The winners of the Award were John Maclean - 1998, Linda Roberts - 1999, Steve Pavlich - 1999, Justin Haddock - 2000, Meloney Churchill - 2001, John Arthur - 2002, Timothy Reinders - 2003. The VIOSH Program continued but it is not known why the Award winners' names were not added to the plaque.Wooden base with brass plates.
