The first Lildale Show Girl competition was held in 1957 as part if the annual Lilydale Show. The Lilydale Shoe had stopped during the war years and reformed in 1954. The show was restarted by John Plant and Lloyd Gill ( owners of the Lilydale Express) Black and white photograph of the five women who won the highest places in the First Lilydale Show Girl competition in 1957. The winner of the competition, Robyn Hoyland is pictured centre, second prize, Susan Mandel is pictured to the far right, third place is Faye Hart, who is standing second from from right. The St Patrick's Day sports meeting was an annual event in Linton during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1929 the events included running races for children, horse racing and motor car driving. R. This annual report was one year before the opening of the new tertiary division at Mt Helen. Council decided to retain the overall title "The School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat" for the foreseeable future, but to separately name the three divisions as follows: 1. Diploma School - The Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (A division of the School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat) 2. Trades School - The Ballarat School of Industries (A division of the School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat) 3. Secondary School - The Ballarat Technical School (A division of the School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat). The annual report also foreshadowed the Centenary of the School (and technical education in Australia) in 1970. Speaker at the trade Prize Night and Apprenticeship Week was W.J. Anderson, and Craftsmen Certificates were presented by the Ballarat City Council. A number of quarto pages with stapled inside a brown card cover. The report was for the year ended 30 June 1969, and was delivered by Ballarat School of Mines President M.B. John. Page 5 lists the Diplomas awarded. Page 6 lists the scholarships, prizes and awards, including the Josephine Brelaz Scholarship, Martha Pinkerton Scholarship, Frank Pinkerton Scholarship, Mica Smith/Serjeant/Ironworkers Scholarship, Ballaarat Has Comapny Scholarship, Ballaarat City Council Scholarship, R.W. Richards Medal. Page 8 covers buildings and accommodation. Conditions were cramped at Lydiard Street , with conditions hoped to be improved when the Stage I buildings at Mount Helen were completed in the following year. Mount Helen Master Plan was undertaken by Joint site planners G.J. Harrison, staff architect at the Flinders University of South Australia. and messrs L.H. Vernon and associates, of Ballarat. The following staff members retired: A.L.H. Aldersey; J.V. Crotty; M. Page; J.Ralston; P.J. Smith, P.B. Todd; Derek Wooley; Mr Goldfinch. TRADE DIVISION: F.D. Hamilton, J. The bells were sent to the Melbourne Exhibition of 1881. They were awarded first prize. Guaranteed to chime to the sixteenth of a tone. They were purchased by Frederick Perkins Stevens and given to Christ Church Warrnambool as a gift in memory of his son, Frederick Stephen Stevens, who died at his Queensland property in1879.These German bells are the oldest matched peal in Australia.Three bells weighing 9cwt, 5cwt and 3cwt respectively, decorated with angels, medallions and inscriptionsThe largest bell has "Gloria in excelsis Deo: (Glory to God in the highest)"Vivos voco" (I summon the living) and "Motuos plango" (I bewail the dead). Constance Ross was an early pupil at the school attending classes during the Kennedy era (1876 - 1902), teacher until retiring in 1935, but returning 1940 - 1943 during the war years. Constance served on the Clarendon Council 1925 - 1949. In 1954 the school named a visual education centre at the Mair Street campus the IC Ross classroom. The room was furnished and equipped by the Old Collegians Association to honour the long school service of Constance Ross. Large, thick cloth-bound book with embossed design; ornate gold lettering on front cover; very poor condition - lettering missing from spine; the book is accompanied with a hand-written note from Constance Ross dated Nov 1929. Happy Valley was originally called Lucky Woman's. The School opened under the name of Happy Valley in 1883, and the brick building probably dates from that time. Miles Barraclough was the head teacher from 1873 to 1887. When mining ceased the population declined and the land reverted to grazing. The School closed in 1940. Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.Book, Bridge and how to play it, 1901
This book belonged to the Warrnambool solicitor, Con O’Mahony (1863-1920). In 1883, he won the University of Melbourne Bowen Prize for his essay on the Federation of the Australian colonies. His prize, ten volumes of the ‘Lives of the Chancellors’, is today in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. O’Mahony had a legal practice in Warrnambool in the Royal Chambers in Kepler Street at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He was initially in a partnership with Messrs E.W. Klingender and Murray, then ,when this partnership was dissolved, he continued the business under the name of O’Mahony and later O’Mahony and Murray. He was actively involved in the management of the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute and was a member of the Warrnambool Hospital committee. The item here described shows O’Mahony’s interest in bridge-playing, a popular pastime at that time. This book is of some significance as it belonged to Con O’Mahony, a well-known lawyer in Warrnambool in the early 1900s. It also shows the interest in bridge-playing as a pastime during that period. This is a small hard cover book of 112 pages. It was published in 1901(eighth edition) and contains seven chapters on how to play bridge, a scoring table and an index. The last three pages are advertisements for other books on bridge. The cover is yellow with the title of the book, the author’s name and the publisher on the front cover contained within a scroll pattern with four coloured images of the four kings from a pack of cards. The back cover has a list of the British Chess Handbooks published by George Routledge & Sons Ltd. Michelle ZUCCOLO Born Orbost, Victoria Between 2004 and 2007 Michelle Zuccolo undertook a Master of Arts, (Visual Arts part-time by research) at the University of Ballarat (later Federation University Australia). Her BA (Fine Art) was awarded by the Victoria College of Art and Design, and she has a DipEd from Melbourne College of Advanced Education. Michelle Zuccolo's work is underpinned by an interest in the human psyche, expressed in related portraiture paintings, life drawing and sculpture.This work was a finalist in the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize, and she won the 2021 $3,000 Local Art Prize for the painting Habitat (2020), which raises questions about interactions between introduced and native species. This is a typewritten account of the history of Port Fairy from 1810 to 1890. It was written by William Earle (1850 -1902). In an addenda at the back of this folder there is a note from William Earle which indicates that the booklet was written in 1896 ‘as a result of a prize offered by several residents in a Schedule issued in connection with a local Industrial Exhibition, which Prize it secured’. Does this refer to the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition? No evidence of this has yet been found. As this folder was given to the ShipLovers Society of Victoria Library in 1963, some ten years before Earle’s history was reprinted in 1973, it is an early copy of Earle’s original work and may have been produced in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The original material was first published by the Port Fairy Gazette in 1896.This folder is of great interest as it is an early copy of Earle’s History of Port Fairy, an important historical publication. This is a black cardboard folder containing 120 typewritten foolscap pages about the history of Port Fairy 1810-1890 (written by William Earle). Inside the front cover there is a stamp of the ShipLovers Society of Victoria Library. The front cover has a sheet of white paper stuck on with adhesive tape. It has a black and white sketch of an anchor, a sailing ship and a rope. The pages are attached to the folder with four metal studs.
