Frank and Blanche Cornell had their home built in 1904. Mr Cornell was a keen gardener, usually doing 2 hours’ work before going to work. He was a director of Buckley & Nunn, Bourke Street, having worked up from a position as shipping clerk. Frank was a great supporter of and worker for the Empire Day celebrations in the 1905-1911 period and also of the bowling club. He was also a keen photographer. Known as ‘Yielima’ 1888-1922 and ‘St. Aubins’ 1922-1956, this ‘modernized’ mansion was built about 1887 for Edward Kellett. He was born in Chorley, Lancashire, England. Edward Kellett married Selina Wells in 1852 at St Peters, Eastern Hill. She was born in c1827 in Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, daughter of William Wells and Elizabeth Allan. The family arrived from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on the 'Osprey' on 22 March 1849. The couple had 8 children - 5 girls and 3 boys; 3 died in infancy. All were born in Collingwood before the family came to Surrey Hills. Edward's funeral notice in The Argus of 11 July 1893 states that he was a corn merchant of Exhibition Street. His property was sworn at 1512 pounds, 1232 in realty and 280 pounds personally. He was buried in Melbourne General Cemetery (CofE Compartment K, No 306). Selina is listed in Erasmus Street in the 1903, 1905 and 1908 electoral rolls as a boarding house keeper. She died at Surrey Hills on 22/10/1911. In her will she left realty valued at 900 pounds and personally at 220 pounds. She was buried with her husband. 'Yielima' was sold on 19 Febraury 1919 with a sale of contents on 18 March 1919. From 1922-1947 Thomas Daniel O’Callaghan (c1871-1962), a police magistrate, made his home here. He is remembered as being of ‘soldierly demeanour, with a flowing mane of hair’. He always carried a walking stick and wore a flower in his buttonhole. His wife was Florence (nee Harling, c1873-1933) pre-deceased him. They had previously lived in Essendon, Moonee Ponds and Stawell before coming to Erasmus Street. After moving out of Erasmus Street he is listed in the 1949 and 1954 electoral rolls at 90 Durham Road, Surrey Hills. In 1952 the property was purchased by Father Timothy Fitzpatrick, Parish Priest of Our Holy Redeemer Parish, Surrey Hills. It consisted of a large two storey house, a coach house and stable, and an acre and a half of land. In 1954 the coach house and stable were converted into the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and the following year Father John Kelly was appointed parish priest. and resided in the house. At this time the house was not in good repair. "The gentleman who had lived there alone since his wife died many years before, lived in the servants quarters and the rest of the house had been badly neglected. As they travelled from Balwyn on a daily basis, the property at 301 Elgar Road was purchased as a presbytery and 'Yielima' became a convent. The stables continued to be used as a church until 1964 when a new church was completed and opened by His Grace Archbishop Simmonds on the 20th of March. There were never large numbers of double-storey Victorian mansions in Surrey Hills. 'Yielma' is significant as one of the few remaining ones. Alan Judge Holt (1912-1993), Frederick Sutton Holt (1914-1992) and Raymond James Holt (1918-2000) were the children of Edmund Holt (1881-1945) and Ruby Ellen Sutton (1889-1961). The family had multiple associations with Surrey Hills, in particular the Surrey Hills Methodist Church. Associated homes were in Beatrice Avenue and Broughton Road. Alan Judge Holt became secretary of the Victorian Lands Department and his meticulous research laid the foundations of the SHNCHC. The relationship of Dot to the family needs clarification. A check of the electoral rolls points to this being the home of Frederick Harry Percival Lamble, labourer, born in Collingwood. He and his family continued to live at 87 Essex Road until his death in 1968 and his occupation is consistently given as labourer. The rotunda was built in 1912 by Clarence Montgomery for the Surrey Hills Progress Association and the local community and dedicated to John Gray, "a highly respected and revered citizen". Surrey Hills Brass Band regularly gave concerts in the rotunda, provided music for regular 'loyal' celebrations and also for silent films held in the gardens. The rotunda was quite elevated off the ground due to the slope of the gardens and the bioscope was stored in the room underneath. This was later used as the infant welfare centre until the Progress Association built a dedicated facility for these purposes. The rotunda was demolished in 1972. Clarence Montgomery, carpenter, was living in Sunbury Crescent in 1914. By 1916 he had moved to 83 Croydon Road where he lived for the rest of his life. Clarence was born in 1869 in Taradale, son of John Montgomery and Jane Ford. He married Sarah Ann Ingram in Echuca in 1894. Their children were: 1. Annie (Mrs P Paynter) born Echuca in 1895 2. William Henry born Echuca in 1897 3. Christina Mary (Mrs F Meyers) born Echuca in 1898 4. Violet (Mrs G Ewing) born Echuca in 1902 5. Clarence George Ingram born Echuca in 1906 and died aged 7 months. Violet became a tailoress and Christina a dressmaker. William became a carpenter like his father. Sarah Ann Montgomery died at their home in June 1932 aged 62 years. Clarence died in August 1946 aged 77 years. They are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (P-EB-0020). John Gray was "actively associated with all movements for the benefit of neighbours and fellow citizens". [Quote from the official tribute on his death in 1909.] He was very active in the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the early 1900's. Although constructed 5 years after their opening, this rotunda was a central feature of the Surrey Gardens which was planted to a design adapted from one suggested by the renowned landscape gardener and botanist William Robert Guilfoyle (1840-1912). Rotundas were a key feature of many late nineteenth and early twentieth century public parks. This particular rotunda was notable for the Chinoiserie influence reflected in its roof. Surrey Gardens are now regarded as one of the City of Boroondara's heritage gardens and this image is significant as evidence of the design of the rotunda which is no longer extant. It is also significant as evidence of the extent of the role of the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the provision of public facilities. Date is approximate. In 1920 this became the home of Mr and Mrs Robert Moore, whose daughter Mabel Annie married Norman Brodley Carter of Mont Albert. The house was named after 'Glenisla', a western District grazing property located between Hamilton and Horsham on the Henty Highway and on the edge of the Grampians National Park. This was established as a super-fine wool stud in 1860 and was passed down the family until it was sold in 1922. The family transferred from this property to Melbourne. Robert is listed as a grazier in the 1924 electoral roll at Chestnut Street. With him are Victor Cecil listed as a carpenter; Isabella, Mabel Annie and Edgar Gilbert listed as an orchardist. In 2003 the house was extant minus the verandas. This photo may have been taken from the rear of the property. This was the home of the Offszanka family from 1913; they came to Surrey Hills from Richmond. Carl Theodore Offszanka (1874-1944) was a furrier. Both he and his wife Ida, nee Schade, (1882-1963) were born in Germany. They married in Victoria in 1908. Their home was called 'Westfalia' (ref: 1919 electoral roll), presumably after the region in NW Germany. They had at least 4 children: Carl Bernard - b 1909 Marie Eliese - b 1910 Erna Helena - b 1913; d 1996 - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. Bernard George - b 1914; d 1987 (Surrey Hills) - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. The family were associated with Our Holy Redeemer and also donated class photos of the school to the collection. Carl and Ida are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (RC 032-0034). The semi-circular bay window is not original to the house. This home has had a 2nd storey added to it in late 1990s. According to a family descendant (REF: Email 1/8/20 from grandson) Carl Theodor Offszanka purchased the home in 1913 for £616. He also purchased the adjoining vacant block of land at 42 Guildford Road and ran a large orchard on it before later selling it. This appears to have been between 1920-1930. The family continued to occupy the house until after 1980 when Erna Helena and Bernard George are listed in the electoral rolls. Our property register lists Erna Helena Offszanka as the last member there. She died on 5 May 1996. Members of the Offszanka family lived in this property from its beginnings for more than 70 years. He practised at 171 Union Road joining or taking over from Dr Percy Liddle in 1905. The property was rented from the Zeplin family who built the house in 1890, which was known as 'Edgeware', and originally owned all the land bound by the railway, Union Road, Wilson Street and Montrose Street. in the 1920s to 1930s. 1906 became the home of Dr James Blakie, surgery was to the left of house. In 1912 Blakie had house built opposite (now Medical Centre). In 1920s-30s 'Edgeware' became Surrey Hills Police Station. They had 5 sons and 1 daughter: John William 'Jack' Sneddon (b.1908 - d. 1957); married Mabel Creek. Norman Alexander Sneddon (b. 1910 - d 1989); married Eva Pearl Sampson. She was born 21/9/1901 and died 14/4/1926. Her entries in the Victorian BDM index give that her father was Henry Dore and her mother Sarah Ann Bird and that she was born in Neerim. She married Herbert Henry Keane in 1922; her death at the age of 24 years was registered in Heidelberg. According to the donor her young children Wallace and Phyllis were embraced by William and Mary Sneddon. William and Mary Sneddon are buried in Box Hill Cemetery. The donor Robin da Costa-Adams is related by her first marriage to the Sneddon family. Relationship with Bird family: Netta Sneddon was correct in that Alice Keane was likely a relative. The exact relationship is yet to be fully established. Alice's mother's name is given as Sarah Ann Bird (1873-1952) with birth at Tarrawingee; father John Bird and mother Sarah Ann Coburn (REF: Victorian BDM index). Her notice of marriage in The Age in 1894 states she is "the eldest dau of John Bird of Drouin, late of Box Hill and Talgarno." Has her mother's surname been misspelt? Is it Coulston? This was the home of John Inglis Lothian, father of Thomas Lothian of St Abbs 33 York Street, Mont Albert. John Inglis Lothian was a bookkeeper, who with his wife Lillias Charlotte, née Smith, arrived in Melbourne in July 1888, John having come to represent the publishing firm of Walter Scott. John Butler Maling, retired farmer, built his home on the corner of his property which extended from Weybridge Street to Whitehorse Road and from James to Ross Street. From 1853 he lived in a simple farmhouse located near the present Ross Street until he had 'Ancyra' built in c.1889 from bricks made from clay dug from a quarry on the property. This was located in the now-park in James Street. John Butler Maling Snr was born in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire. He married Kate Conlan in 1882 and they had 3 children - Silas, Alick and Zillah. He died in 1912 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery. Often referred to as John Butler Maling Senior as he had a nephew by the same name. He also lived on a similar sized property known as 'The Willows', located to the west. He became the first Mayor of Camberwell. From c1936 til c1960 the property was used as a rest home (Ancyra Rest Home) and then a nursery (Pied Piper Nursery). This is one of relatively few surviving houses that provides links to pre0urban Surrey Hills. They are listed in both the 1903 and 1906 electoral rolls in Arundel Crescent; his occupation is given as bootmaker. John McLaren Dimmick was the son of Cr William (Roy) Dimmick (1888-1947) and his wife, Myrtle Elvira (nee Monie - 1888-1976). It was named after Cliburn, Westmorland (later Cumbria) where Mary's mother was born and the name was given to all their homes. Mary Bird, daughter of John Bird and Mary Coulston, b 1878 Bethanga, Victoria; died 1948, Surrey Hills. They were married on 12/11/1903 in Surrey Hills at the home of James Sneddon. The pencil sketch from which this photo was taken had been hidden from view from 1919 - 1996 when it was located behind a framed photo retrieved from the Surrey Hills Bowling Club at the time of its closure. The sketch had been used as backing when photo framed in 1919. Jocelyn Hall gave the original to great nephew, [name TBC], who was a pharmacist at the Mont Albert tram terminus at the time. Initially the subject's identity was not known. A scribbled name 'Walduck' on a different photo finally resulted in the identification as John Robert Gray, who died 1917. He was engaged at the time of enlistment and after his death his fiancee did not marry. He attended Surrey Hills Primary School and was a salesman at the time of enlistment on 9 May 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on 3 October 1916. His AIF papers list his mother as his next of kin, both resident in Suffolk Road, Surrey Hills. He was a gunner in the Howitzer Brigade 120. He was Killed in Action on 21 June 1917 and was buried at Bapaume Australian Cemetery (Row C, Grave NO. 5), France. It is believed that the sketch was made prior to him going overseas to France. John Robert Gray was the eldest son of Emma (nee Beckett) and John Gray. His father John Gray was "actively associated with all movements for the benefit of neighbours and fellow citizens". [Quote from the official tribute on his death in 1909.] He was very active in the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the early 1900's. Anlaby’s sheep are born, bred and shorn at their farm located in South Australia. The wool is then scoured at Michels in Adelaide, combed and turned into Tops at Cashmere Connections in Bacchus Marsh, and then Spun and Woven at a historic mill in Scotland named Johnstons of Elgin. Sewing is completed by artisan seamstresses and packaging is from a local Adelaide family business. Established in 1839 just North of the Barossa Valley in South Australia, Anlaby is the oldest continuing merino sheep stud on mainland Australia. Fredrick Dutton employed Alexander Buchannan to bring sheep to the buoyant market in Adelaide from Goulburn NSW. Several others speculated on possible successes, including Buchannan and a flock of 18,000 sheep were walked overland. The trek took nine months. During this time the Adelaide market prices had collapsed. Having found land with a spring of sweet water, Dutton decided to keep his flock of 5,000 stud sheep and purchased a small parcel of land that is now called Anlaby. The property prospered and Buchannan was employed as manager for the next 25 years. At its height Anlaby covered 250sq miles – 160,000 acres and employed 70 men. The first bale of wool from South Australia to be auctioned in London came from Anlaby. The Anlaby stud also provided the foundation ewes for the well-known Bungaree merino stud in 1841. With prosperity came a large house and gardens for Buchannan in 1861. Anlaby was inherited by Henry Dutton from his uncle in 1895. Squire Dutton, as he was known, continued to grow the family’s fortunes and spent his money expanding the grand home and creating a magnificent 10-acre garden. Today the Anlaby merino stud continues and both the house and garden are undergoing significant restorations. Wool continues to be one of the most important elements at Anlaby. It was the source of great wealth in the past and is now directly tied into Anlaby’s future. Anlaby makes beautiful woollen scarves, lady’s wraps, exquisite throws and small range of baby blankets. Tim HOLMES Born Wales Tim Holmes first became interested in pottery on a visit to New Zealand in 1969. After returning home he studied at the local art school, then enrolled at the Harrow School of Art in 1973. While there, he was introduced to Gwyn Hanssen Pigott's work, and returned to Australia to help her set up a pottery in Tasmania. He established his own Garden Island Creek Pottery in 1977, and started making wood-fired pottery, digging and milling his own clay. He used a two- chambered kiln, firing raw- glazed domestic stoneware in the first chamber and earthenware garden pots in the second. In 1988, he moved his pottery to the Potter's Croft at Dunalley on the east coast of Tasmania. He and his wife Tammy now run the Potter's Croft as a bed and breakfast with a craft gallery, and he is still making pottery using a wood-fired kiln. Garden Island Creek Pottery had its own impressed stamp, and work may also be impressed 'TH' or incised 'T. Holmes'. Kees HOS In 1956 Kees and his wife Tina made a new life with their two children in the arts community of New Zealand. In Australia Kees established the art school at Gippsland College of Advanced Education in 1971 with a radical multidisciplinary approach to art education. He generously delivered encouragement and opportunities to many people including lecturers, visiting artists and students. His small team literally built an art school from zero. Temporary accommodation in an old factory and service station in Morwell moved to three student-built studios on the Gippsland Campus. His highest recognition was 1997 when the names of Kees and Albertine Hos were added to the Wall of Honour in the Garden of the Righteous at Yad Vasheem in Jerusalem along with many others who put their lives on the line against the biggest killing machine the world had known. The ‘hiding-place’ in Kees and Tina’s home was discovered but Tina managed to rescue a baby as her own while the Jewish parents were transported to Auschwitz and Dachau. Kees was on the run using his printmaking skills to forge passports but was eventually captured and jailed, the war’s end saving his life. Framed portrait of Tilly Aston who began the Association for the Advancement of the Blind, a forerunner to the Association for the Blind. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the AFB Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Tilly sits with one hand resting against a table, and the other in her lap. She is wearing a black collared dress with a white lace neck ruff held with an opal pin. Two medals (the Jubilee medal and Coronation medal) are pinned to the chest, each consisting of a red and white bowtie with a brass medallion. Tilly Aston was born in Carisbrook, Victoria, in 1873. When she was very young her parents noticed she was having problems with her vision. They took her to a doctor who diagnosed her with no sight in her right eye and the prognosis of loss of vision in the left eye. As a result of this she was totally blind by the age of 7. Despite this her parents endeavoured to give Tilly as many of life’s advantages that their limited means could supply. From an early age she was taught singing, music, poetry, arithmetic, encouraged to read and observe the natural world around her and be independent. At the age of 8 she was sent to the Asylum and School for the Blind (later called the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind). She excelled in a wide range of subjects and matriculated in 1889. With the help of a public fund was able to attend Melbourne University, being the first blind Australian to do so. Unfortunately the lack of Braille text books made it impossible for Tilly to continue her studies and she left in second year. Tilly was determined that other blind people would not have the same negative experience she had had. In 1894 she organised a meeting to form the Victorian Association of Braille Writers with the aim of producing and supplying Braille to blind Victorians. Braille was produced by trained volunteers with ? recruited in the first six month. Other rights and services for blind people remained very limited. In 1895 Tilly organised a meeting, which formed the Association for the Advancement of the Blind (now Vision Australia). The Association was instrumental in obtaining many benefits for blind people including a blind pension, voting rights and transport concessions. It also established the first nursing homes for blind people, at a time when many blind people were homeless and destitute. Tilly went on to be Australia’s first blind teacher. She was also a very talented musician, author of seven books and was very gifted at arts and crafts. She knew Esperanto and corresponded with people all around the world including Helen Keller. Tilly passed away on November 1st 1947. Her legacy continues through the work Vision Australia which provides services for thousands of blind Australians.
