William Fleming Hopkins was born in the Maryborough District in 1864. He graduated from Adelaide University, B.A.. Returning to Victoria he did three years of teaching at Portland and Scotch College. Admitted to Melbourne University, graduating M.B. and B.S. in 1891 and secured the appointment of Medical Officer and Manager of the Stawell Hospital. Doctor Hopkins joined the Victorian Rangers Medical Staff in 1892 with the rank of Captain. He served with them until his appointment as Medical Officer to the First Victorian Contingent under the command of Captain McLeish. Captain Hopkins exhibited courage and coolness under heavy fire attending to the wounded at Rensburg. Black and white portrait of Frederick John Cato seated holding folded papers. The coloured photo is an A4 print of a painting of Fred Cato in the Canberra National Portrait Gallery. In both photos Frederick is seated and dressed in a suit, vest and tie. Frederick John Cato (1858 -1935) was a grocer, part of the Moran & Cato chain of some years ago. He was born in Stawell and went to 502 (Stawell State School) for many years eventually becoming an assistant teacher. He resigned in 1887 to go teaching in new Zealand. Frederick was a generous man and Cato prizes were presented to pupils attending 502. Stawell benefited in many ways from his generosity. Cato Park was named in his honor. It is possible that E.M. Gibson left these photographs at the College when she retired from teaching there. Photographs relate to her work in designing new planting around the Administration Building and a general record of what the whole site looked like during this time. Various numbering systems have been used on reverse of photographs but the most consistent one has been used for cataloguing and sorting. These photographs include some of the missing ones from Series 1, 2, 4, 6 and 76 in B09.0005 and are the same as those in the negatives B09.0001. Possibly one person (J.L. Provan?) has taken the photographs and E.M. Gibson has picked out the ones she wanted. The collection is largely unframed and comprises works from the Print Council of Australia, staff members and former students. Rodney FORBES (1951- ) Born Melbourne Rodney Forbes' work is figurative narrative painting and uses autobiographical and incident-as-metaphor methods to explore wider issues of knowing and belonging in oral traditions such as working class, children’s and artisan subcultures. Dale HICKEY (31 July 1937 - ) Born Melbourne Dale Hickey studied art at Swinburne College of Technology before teaching at Phillip Institute of Technology (now Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) from 1973–89. Leaving that position he devoted himself full-time to painting. In 1968 he was included in the National Gallery of Victoria exhibition of Australian minimalism, 'The Field'. His work is known for an awareness of minamalism, colour field and realism. In 1986 Dale Hickey won the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery's Hugh Williamson Art Prize. In 1988 the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery mounted a large retrospective exhibition of his work which was then toured. His work is widely represented in Australian public collections. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. The stimulus for this project to investigate health and safety in art teaching and to suggest cost effective control measures, arose from concerns that had been expressed by some members of staff within the Arts Faculty at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education about aspects of health and safety at their workplace. As a non-artist it is hard to attempt to describe the artists' perspective of their working environment. Within the artistic community there is a great concern for individuality and this is expressed in the artists' work. The need for flexibility and spontaneity is a vital and intuitive part of the artistic environment. The lady in this photograph is probably Mrs Eveline Trevaskis who taught at the Wairewa School. Mrs. Trevaskis taught school from her early 20’s in different parts of Victoria. She gave it up to get married, has four children and 11 grand-children. Four of her grand-children are at Wairewa school. Mrs. Trevaskis went back to teaching during the wartime teacher shortage. She relieved at Buchan East State School for two years, getting up at 3.45 am to drive the 24 miles in pony and jinker. Wairewa State School, No. 3739 was built in 1923. The school closed at the end of 1973. Mrs Trevaskis was the teacher at Wairewa 1919-22 and 1945-1956. ABOUT THE ARTIST: (Source: Details accompanying the prints, published in 1988 - courtesy Liz Seaton). Glenn Duncan was born around the time that plans for a technical school at Ringwood were being made. For his primary and secondary education, he attended Blackburn North Primary School, and Blackburn and Box Hill North Technical Schools. At tertiary level, he completed a Diploma of Art and Design at Caulfield Institute of Technology, followed by a Diploma of Education at Hawthorn Institute of Education. Glenn worked in printeries, design studios and advertising agencies, and as a freelance Graphic Designer. His teaching career included 3 years at Goroke Consolidated School, and then, from 1986 to 1988, as a member of Ringwood Technical School's Art Department. Glenn Duncan's sketches are a unique tribute to the school on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.Set of 12 prints of sketches of School Buildings and grounds by Resident artist at the school Glenn Duncan. 8 prints are on yellow paper. 4 are mounted on backing boards taken from frames. These items were sent or given to Daisy Ogier (nee Vickers) during World War One by Corporal Arthur Anderson who enlisted from Warrnambool in 1915 at the age of 21. He served in Egypt and France and returned to Australia in 1919. Daisy Ogier (1907-1987) was a student and then a teacher at Warrnambool Technical School with her early teaching years there from 1925 to 1936 and in 1949. She became the head mistress from 1950 to 1963 and in 1968. She officially retired in 1976. Daisy Vickers was one of the best loved and dedicated teachers that the school ever had. She married the Reverend Fred Ogier and continued her association with the school after her husband's death.This card is interesting because of its association with World War One and with two local people: Daisy Vickers and Arthur Anderson. This is a colour postcard from World War One with a coloured picture showing three British soldiers in battle dress smoking cigarettes. He served in Egypt and France and returned to Australia in 1919. Daisy Ogier (1907-1987) was a student and then a teacher at Warrnambool Technical School with her early teaching years there from 1925 to 1936 and in 1949. She became the head mistress from 1950 to 1963 and in 1968. She officially retired in 1976. Daisy Vickers was one of the best loved and dedicated teachers that the school ever had. She married the Reverend Fred Ogier and continued her association with the school after her husband's death.
