Pipe smoking has been in vogue for centuries, and in Australia it was a symbol of the "discerning smoker" such as the landed gentry or men of professional status. This pipe, of the cherrywood style, would have suited the young professional of the mid and late 1900s. It is the type of pipe well suited to the rural backdrop. In the late 1900s, with the health related restrictions placed on public smoking these tobacco pipes were not immune from the legislation, and even though the pipe smoke was not as offensive as cigarette smoke it still came under the umbrella of smoking. Pipes were also used in the process of inhaling illicit drugs i.e. marijuana, but this use was limited to a very few. Smoking in the second millennium is being phased out as a social habit in Australia but may affect the few "private" smoker and has, as the United States prohibition era (alcoholic drinks) did, spawnThis type of pipe lends itself well to the rural setting of the Kiewa Valley and although it is a bit more bulky in shape its wooden barrel blends into the environment. The Kiewa Valley region was up until the late 1900s part of the Australian Tobacco Industry and the levels of men smoking pipes was enhanced by the ready supply, "off the fields" of tobacco leaves. It was used in a time when a good pipe was a precursor for a good relaxation activity. This method of smoking required at least one hand free to hold the pipe (especially the heavier ones) and therefore was used more by the "landed gentry, squire or academic) than by the labourer.This pipe (a ROPP brand) has a full bent vertical stem and its style is cherrywood. The pipe has a permanent filter and a orange coloured band at the stem /shank connection. The stem screws into the bowl and the shank 110mm is made from cherrywood (dark brown in colour). The bit (mouth piece) is 40mm long and in an 80 degree curviture. It has red and green coloured leather ties at the mortise/tenon location.tobacco, pipe smoking, smoking accessories

O'Callaghan's hotel was one of three 'hotels' which operated in Mitcham in the late 19th century. Suited on the corner of Station St and Whitehorse Road it was run by Irish widow, Mary Jane O'Callaghan. Australian Rules Football history see MAV 00517 1909: Football Team. Only player named is Paddy Green. Since the player guernseys are almost the same and the photographer is the same we presume this is the same team as shown in MAV 00517 named as the Moorabbin Football Team Moorabbin Football Club, nicknamed the Kangaroos, was the name of two distinct Australian rules football clubs which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). The first club, founded in the early 20th century, joined the VFA in 1951 and played there until 1963 with great success; they played home matches at Moorabbin Oval and wore royal blue and white hooped jerseys. The second club played in the VFA from 1983 to 1987. Moorabbin played initially in the Federal Football League, making their debut in 1909 and competing until 1950. During this time the club won 12 premierships, including winning all six premierships staged over the nine years between 1940 and 1948 (the competition was in recess from 1942 until 1944). The club entered the VFA in 1951. Its Federal League home ground, the Dane Road Reserve, was not up to VFA standards; so, in 1951 the club played at Cheltenham, and in 1952 moved into the Moorabbin Oval, which the Moorabbin Council had developed during 1951. The Kangaroos made the 1954 and 1955 finals series without success but in 1957 they helped eliminate premiership favourite Williamstown after defeating them by two points in the Semi Final. Moorabbin, who were coached by Bill Faul, took on Port Melbourne in the Grand Final, whom they had not once beaten since joining the league. In another upset, Moorabbin won comfortably to claim their maiden VFA premiership. In the early 1960s, the Moorabbin Council was very keen to bring a Victorian Football League team to Moorabbin Oval. 1964, the Moorabbin City Council secured a deal with St Kilda, who moved to Moorabbin Oval starting in 1965. The club originally intended to seek readmission for the 1965 season, but in July the club committee decided to withdraw permanently from the Association,and disbanded. Photograph is Black and White. This shoehorn is a typical household item which has been used since the Middle Ages to assist in manipulating shoes onto the feet. They are made from a variety of materials with horn being a popular and common material and being readily available in many cases are simply honed down to a smooth shape. The age of this particular one is unknown. A common item made from natural material which would have historical and social interest and significance.Made from a cow's horn, this is fawn to grey in colour with the narrow end more of a striped nature with the bottom section, a plain grey them cream. Artist comment: These three prints (The Groom, The Undertaker's Assistant, The Organist) are part of a series on forebears of Portland. The drawings are taken from people in a collection of photographs belonging to the Johnson Family of Portland. The "Old Lady" and "The Wedding" are part of the same series. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama.
