The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.When 29 Uvadale Grove, Kew was offered for sale it was described as: ‘Kew. Fine locality, 3 minutes Cotham Road. Splendidly built 6 roomed Brick Villa. Rooms 17 x 14, 16 x 13, &c. Beautifully fitted throughout. Land 70 x 134 to ROW.’ The price was advertised as being £1,400. The house exhibits key features of Federation architecture such as the gabled roof with a facing of half-timber and stucco. The veranda has a curved corrugated iron roof supported by timber pillars and fretwork. Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski facilities at Falls Creek.The journal includes stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. The cover features a view of Mount Bogong across the Kiewa Valley in a photo taken by C. Bottomley. On page 115 - 115, R D McNabb & F Griffith reported on a variety of Falls Creek Highlights. This photograph shows a small timber house in Wooragee. In 1855, the Ovens district made a shift towards farming development that included the sales of land in the Wooragee Valley. This shift came because of miner's demands and concern about stabilising the area around the goldfield. Continual migration needed to be supported, unlucky diggers needed alternative employment, and there was a lack of affordable fresh produce available on the goldfields. Initially, the cost of land in areas like Wooragee was prohibitive, and miners chose to squat rather than overpay for poor land. Throughout the 1850s and 1860s, land reform was a key topic for miners and politicians, as they attempted to improve land access and protect financial interests. This photograph is an example of rural development in the Wooragee area, showing the cottage, tents, and garden beds. While the date is unknown, the image nevertheless links us to the 1850s-1860s story of rural development in Indigo Shire. Joyce Hayward was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1981 for services to the arts in Warrnambool. The British Empire Medal was instituted in 1917 as part of the Order of the British Empire and in 1922 became a separate award known as the British Empire Medal. Joyce Hayward came with her husband Cyril to Warrnambool from England in 1955. For 30 years they were the dominant figures in the performing arts organizations in Warrnambool. Joyce Hayward was the Director of the Warrnambool Theatre Company from 1955 to 1985 and directed more than 80 plays and musicals. She founded the Warrnambool Calisthenics Club, helped develop the Holiday Actors organization and was a key figure in the revival of the Warrnambool Arts Council in the 1970s. She was a Life Member of the Warrnambool Theatre Company. She also helped establish the Performing Arts Centre in Warrnambool. She received the Warrnambool City Council Citizenship Award in 1970.It is a significant honour to be awarded a British Empire Medal and the acquisition by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society of the medal awarded to Joyce Hayward is of considerable importance. During World War II the Japanese attacked New Britain soon after the outbreak of hostilities in the Pacific Ocean. During January 1942, Japanese heavily bombed Rabaul. On 23 January, Japanese marines landed by the thousands, starting the Battle of Rabaul. Verna Barry commenced worked as a typist at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) in 1961. In 1965 she became private secretary to Jack Barker, Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines and later Director of the Ballarat Institute of Education (BIAE) and the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE). A trusted and loyal member of staff, Verna was devoted to her job, her workplace and greatly respected Jack Barker with whom she worked loyally for until his retirement in 1987. In 1988 Verna was appointed Administration Officer with Engineering Faculty. She spent five years with Engineering Science from 1990, and in 1996 worked for Information Technology & Mathematical Science (ITMS), becoming a key member of the Research Support team. This book celebrates the achievements of the Bendigo Community Bank after 15 years in Surrey Hills and Canterbury. The Surrey Hills branch was opened in the bank site previously operated by the CBA (Commonwealth Bank of Australia) after it took over the State Savings Bank of Victoria (SSB) which has the building constructed for bank use in 1916. A public meeting to garner support for opening a branch of the Bendigo Community Bank was held in the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. Y2K / the year 2000 / The millennium bug / was commonly used to refer to a widespread computer programming shortcut that was expected to cause extensive havoc as the year changed from 1999 to 2000. Instead of allowing four digits for the year, many computer programs only allowed two digits (e.g., 99 instead of 1999). As a result, there was immense panic that computers would be unable to operate at the turn of the millennium when the date descended from "99" to "00". The Bug presented a formidable challenge to the problem-solving skills of local government officials. Lacking a cure-all that will work for every municipality, local officials must develop their own solutions to meet their community's unique needs. A wide range of souvenirs have been produced to commemorate Wodonga and its landmarks over time. These items document key changes in Wodonga and its heritage. The arch is named in honour of Cr Charles Pollard, a foundation member of the Wodonga Show Society and former Wodonga Shire councillor and president. The arch is 29 metres wide and 15 metres high and consists of two boomerangs coming together to form an archway. Originally spanning across a single carriageway of the Lincoln Causeway, the arch was opened by Princess Alexandra of Kent in 1959 and was built for £1230. When the Country Roads Board said the causeway would have to be duplicated in 1973, a new home was required for the arch. At the request of the Wodonga Show Society, the arch was moved to the entrance of the showgrounds in 1982. After development of the precinct in 2015, the Pollard Arch was erected on Hamilton Smith Drive Wodonga.Small china pieces carrying scenic views of holiday destinations were a popular kind of souvenir during much of the 20th century. One edition was included as a supplement in Mufti, (a veterans publication) in September 1982. The first edition featured Prince Phillip and the words he spoke during a telecast in 1980. Legatee Ken Green was the president. The edition in September 1982 had definitions of key words such as Legatee, Junior Legatee and an explanation of where money came from. It featured a photo of Alisa Watson of the Youth Leadership Group. Edition No 4 was from the Diamond Jubilee Year in 1983, it featured an article on Legatee Frank Doolan and the foundation of Legacy. Rennie Ellis (1940–2003) was as a pivotal figure in Australian visual culture. He was both a documentary photographer and a prominent presence in advertising, television and photography. Ellis was known for his candid documentary images of contemporary Australian life. His photographs of social events, such as music festivals, fashion parades or nightclubs are iconic, but his practice also encompassed the grittier side of life. In his AFL series, Ellis skilfully portrays the nation’s passion for the game, extending his lens beyond the boundary line to showcase the spirited fans alongside the on-field action. In Ellis' photo, a woman streaks at an AFL game – two players stand in frame with her, a Richmond and Collingwood player respectively. Behind them the crowd and a large Richmond banner can be seen. Playful and spirited interactions such as this are a key aspect of Australian football culture.

With the advent of audio content available through i-phones and other small devices, the demand for a dedicated audio, easily portable player for the blind and vision impaired became louder and louder. Two organisations competed to deliver this and Canadian company Humanware developed the Victor Classic as a table top player that relied on discs. As CDs had been introduced into the library some years before, this allowed borrowers to have the advantages of 4 track cassettes within a digital medium. The Victor Reader Classic used simple features that made it easy for clients to navigate through a book or magazine. The player played both DAISY and music CDs. The function keys included controls for variable tone, volume, speed and creation of bookmarks, sleep time and you could navigate by chapter and page on DAISY books. The Department of Transport produced the Melbourne " Next Generation" G class tram badge to thank the team members involved in its design and production. As many of the team members came from Germany, the German translation was included on both sides of the card. Note from one of the production team was: "Staff from the Department of Transport and Planning – Next Generation Trams project team led a self-funded initiative to produce a commemorative badge of the Melbourne " Next Generation" G class tram. These were issued as gifts to persons involved in its design and production to mark the start of series manufacturing. The card it is mounted to is typeset in the proprietary “Network Sans” font, in both Australian English and Austrian German; including a special translated version of the Next Generation Trams Project logo. History of Saint Margaret's Church Eltham beginnings to 1888. Throughout this foundation period the community grew in numbers and influence within the developing district of Eltham. The minister's and lay readers appointed to Saint Margaret's are indentified and their contribution discussed. The significant events of the establishment of a temporary chuch and then a permanent church, the opening and closing of a denominational school, the construction of a parsonage, libraries and Sunday school are all examined. The key to the success of this faith community during its foundation years was the initiative and resourcefulness of its laypersons. - back cover. Tramcar component - possibly locking key - made from two pieces of cut steel and welded together and finished. A known unknown! Kym Smith advised - "11/6/2020 - It looks familiar, but I can’t recall exactly. I think is used as a locking pin to hold an internal panel in place, possibly the internal panels/frames that are on the interior side of the sliding doors, with the pin going through the top sill into the internal frame?" and 13/6 " I remember somewhere seeing a panel that has pins in the bottom that locate in holes in the floor, then the panel is pushed into place and the securing/locking pin used to hold it in place, with the panel having a square saddle that the pin goes through.
