Archie McArthur grew flowers and vegetables and sold them from his house in Canterbury Road, Forest Hill. Later owners used the property as a restaurant and plant nursery. The word Pasquin refers to writings that are satirical. The Bendigo Pasquin relied heavily on advertising but this was not enough to keep it afloat. It had ceased its weekly publication by 1865. The lightweight metal (? tin) suggests this was an everyday item for the working class. It dates to c. 1878 although these were still being sold in 1915 when it was noted that the pot should be rinsed immediately after use with salt water to prevent a tin taste.Old metal French coffee, pot a tapering cylinder fourteen centimeters on the bottom and nine centimeters at the top. It is twenty-eight centimeters high. There is a cap on top with a knob to remove it, there was a hinge attached to the pot which is broken. the wooden handle is 100 centimeters long and 25 centimeters diameter it's attached to a 50 centimeter metal protrusion from the pot. The spout is a tapered tube 140 centimeters long, 30 centimeters diameter at the pot and 15 at its end. there has been some re-soldiering repair where the spout is attached to the pot. The blue work coveralls would have been worn as protective clothing for Victorian Railways employees working on train maintenance and workshop tasks in the later part of the 20th century. The style of the exterior pockets on the front suggests a date of c. 1970s-1980s.The Victorian Railways coveralls have local significant as part of the Wodonga Historical Society's donations from Wodonga residents. This was a small domestic bookcase made by local Ballarat family firm of A. H. Harris in 1920. The firm ceased operating c. 1980. Chaff cutter. Bentall - 1913. Used to cut straw or hay into small pieces before being mixed together with other forage and fed to horses and cattle. Used on a small mixed farm in Emerald originally purchased by C. T. Alexander in 1920.A chaff cutter was an essential piece of equipment in early farms - of which there were many in the Emerald area - which were highly dependent on horsepower for agricultural work until the widespread use of tractors in the second half of the twentieth century.Chaff cutter with cast iron frame containing two sets of teeth which are connected to gears which are connected to a large wheel operated by hand. The Anglican Church at Kiewa. The first stone was laid on the 29th Oct. 1924. In 1879, the Yackandandah rector commenced services on Sundays in private homes in the Kiewa Valley. In 1911 Anglicans met in the Kiewa Methodist Church to elect a committee to organise financial offers and so it eventually became a vestry.The town Kiewa is in the Kiewa Valley. The church served other communities in the Valley. The book records the local populations and their commitment to religion. This is a souvenir of a ‘Back To’ celebration in Warrnambool in 1934. There had been a large-scale ‘Back To’ in Warrnambool in 1930, perhaps prompted by the growing interest in the history of the town ( this was evidenced in many country towns in Victoria at the time) and the need to gather together the remaining older local people as those regarded as pioneers of the district were fast dying out. In 1934 the State of Victoria was celebrating the centenary of the first permanent white settlement at Portland and many other places besides Melbourne took this opportunity to have a reunion of past and present citizens. Also Warrnambool had at the time two men very interested in the history of the settlement – Henri Worland and Patrick O’Grady and the first Warrnambool Historical Society was established the following year with Worland and O’Grady prominent in its establishment and Martin Carter on the first committee as well. Martin Carter, whose name appears on this envelope was the organizer of the 1934 reunion. The Carter family had long been established in Warrnambool as saddlers and Martin Carter was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1917 to 1925 and Mayor during three of those years. No information is available on the ‘Miss Adams ‘ in the address but ‘ R. F. Kennedy & Co.’ refers to the well-known pharmacy business in Timor Street Warrnambool.This envelope is of interest as a souvenir of a ‘Back To’ in Warrnambool in 1934. This is a small envelope with most of the back flap missing. The inside of the envelope has a blue lining. The envelope has a franked green Australian stamp and a Warrnambool Post Office stamp. A handwritten address is on the right side of the envelope. On the left side is a printed poster/advertisement in blue, black and grey colouring. Murchison Street was named for Roderick Impey Murchison who was one of the most distinguished geologists of the 19th century. His liberality and social position plus the pride he took in his science were of immense value in furthering the cause of learning in Britain. Nicholas John Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 Nicholas John Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies, and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria.
