The Anglican Cheltenham parish was created in 1865 by excising a portion of the parish of St Andrews Brighton. A small brick church was completed in 1867 to serve a rural community stretching from Brighton South (Moorabbin) to Mordialloc. 1867 St Matthew's Church of England was erected in Cheltenham beside the Nepean Highway near Charman Road. The early settlers established a tennis club, cricket team and social groups. Unusual choice of location by Port Campbell Surf club due to Port Campbell beach being too small. The Surf Carnival was held at Newfield Bay (possibly for two years running). Eyewitness accounts advise that one year the surf was so rough that the event was abandoned. This photograph appears to show calmer sea. In order to get the surf boats onto the beach a track was bulldozed over the sand dunes. The table and chairs once belonged to the Officers' Mess, 24th Battalion. From 1928 - 1936 the CO 24th Battallion was Lt Col S.G. Savige, DSO MC. It was during this time that the chairs were made and used for dining-in nights. During the a ceremony of remembrance, each officer stood behind his chair and called the name on its back as a mark of respect for those KIA during WW1. At the inaugural meeting of the Club, from which arose Melbourne Legacy in September 1923, eight of the fourteen members had worn the colour patch of 24th Battalion.The connection to Savige and the fact that many of his officers from 24th Battalion became members of Melbourne Legacy. This table and its chairs were formally gifted to Melbourne Legacy on 9th May 1956 when the Club moved to Legacy House. They have been used since in the Club's Board Room, now located on level 1, Legacy House, 293 Swanston Street, Melbourne. Two Legatees were responsible for fully refurbishing the table and chairs - Legatee Gordon Beith (Morrabbin Branch) and Legatee Ted McKenzie (Footscray/Sunshine Branch) Board Room Table - Clear varnished timber table with a two piece glass top Table legs are turned timber on wheels x 5. Two at each end and one in the centre. Chairs - Clear varnished timber with leather cushions x 20. Each chair has an engraved plaque with an officer's name from 24th Battalion. The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contains an article on the preparations for the 100th anniversary with Ken Tsirigotis going to Europe. Also the Brisbane Ranges youth camp, the Disability Rec Day, and the Widows' Remembrance Day high tea and the Torch Society Luncheon. This ashtray was given as a keepsake to customers of Gehrig Dairy in Wodonga. The dairy was located on the corner of Hovell Street and Wodonga Street in the late 1960s. It was owned and operated by Graham Charles Gehrig. It was customary for the dairy to give a Christmas gift each year. Other items included a thermometer and can or bottle openers. Mr. Gehrig passed away in 2019 and is buried in Wodonga. He served over 30 years as a member of the Wodonga Cemetery Trust, many of those as Chairman. Two photographs of Mrs Winifred Fotheringham who helped promote Legacy Week in 1990. She had reached 101 years of age. Mrs Fotheringham is also seen at the annual Commemoration for Students ceremony in April 1990 (in 00845) with two other widows which implies she might have been on the Widows' Club Committee, and also on a visit to the Shrine with a Legatee and another lady in 00579. It was with a group of photos from 1988 to 1990 in a folio with paper labels (see items 01042 to 01049).
