Program of a 5-day festival held 27/2/1926 - 6/3/1926 to raise funds for the Bush Fire Relief Fund, Soldiers' Memorial Hall, St Vincent's Hospital and the Catani Memorial (St Kilda cenotaph). The carnival began with a procession from what is now St Kilda Junction, down Fitzroy Street to Luna Park and the Lower Esplanade. Events included novelty races and contests including pillow-fighting, a paddling race where contestants had to balance on kerosene tins, a cigarette race where competitors raced with lighted cigarettes, and many other contests at the beach. There were also swimming events, boat races, lifesaving demonstrations, displays, music and dancing. The original Victoria Theatre opened on 16 February 1856 with a season by Lola Montez. She performed several farces and her famous spider dance, delighted the diggers and enraged the sensibilities of respectable people, with Henry Seekamp in the famous "whipping" incident with Montez in Ballarat. The program consisted of popular melodramas, farces and hits such as Rob Roy, The Lady of Lyons and the Count of Monte Cristo. The nautical drama Black-Eyed Susan was also very popular. A film of the 1959 rehearsal for Junior Legatee Demonstration at Melbourne Olympic Swimming Stadium. The commentary notes how the fitness programmes avoided bad posture which would 'lead to a loss of confidence in a sensitive child' and helped them to avoid 'falling into bad company and delinquency.' It also noted the 'wise counsel' given to their mothers by Legatees and details the assistance available from Legacy to 9,000 fatherless families in Victoria alone. There are synchronised exercises, judo demonstrations, mass marching, girls creative dancing and a final tableau in readiness for two night's public performances. Sun Loong (simplified Chinese: traditional Chinese:) derived from the Cantonese pronunciation of "New Dragon", is an imperial parade dragon that was used in the Bendigo Easter parade from 1970 through 2019. It was believed to be the longest imperial parade dragon in the world, measuring approximately 100 metres (330 ft) long. Sun Loong was used in the traditional Chinese dragon dance and superseded Bendigo's earlier Loong in 1970; Loong is heritage listed as it is believed to be the oldest complete imperial parade dragon in the world. On 21 April 2019, a new dragon named Dai Gum Loong made its debut at the Bendigo parade and took over the title of longest dragon at 125 m (410 ft). Photographs of handicap dependents at enjoying music and dance from a military band that featured in an edition of the Answer. There were frequent events and activities organised by Melbourne Legacy for handicapped dependents. The Junior Legatees, with many mums and friends of Legacy went to the Defence Force School at Watsonia Barracks and were treated to a performance by the 2/10 Medium Regiment Band. The Bandmaster was WOI Dave Farrell and there was a surprise visit by a clown. According to the article "Former JL Sharon Taylor, now a corporal with 'Visits Protocol and Ceremonial' at the Defence Centre - Melbourne, gave a moving tribute to Legacy in recognition of the support she had received as a young girl. Junior Legatees were given an opportunity to play some of the musical instruments and the enjoyment is evident as the photos show." The main entrance to Franco's was from Main Road. It was run by Sammy and another family member. Franco's was a 2 story restaurant. Pizza take away downstairs. Licensed, BYO upstairs. Downstairs originally had a female pianist/singer and the walls were a peachy pink colour with horse shoe shapes in the plaster, upstairs was a full function room with dance floor. It was renovated in the early 90s and a full bar added downstairs. They sold up and then opened a take away pizza shop on Bolton Street. The Penguin Drycleaners building was an extension built right over the entrance garden; the building to the left the former Volumes now Missing Gorilla. This film is a curated collection of iconic early Australian films. There are three sequences. The first sequence consists of a segment of 1908 boxing match between Jack Johnson and Tommy Burns at Sydney Stadium, 1906 Hawthorn street scenes, and a 1909 VFL Football final. The second sequence consists of 1896 Melbourne Cup, 1906 Sydney street scenes and Baldwin Spencer footage of Australian indigenous ceremonial dance. The third sequence consists of a bush ranger scene from "Robbery Under Arms" (1920), a great escape scene from "The Sentimental Bloke" (1919) and Sydney Harbour boat chase from "Let George Do It" (1938). These sequences are repeated several times. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. A postcard to the Comradeship Committee when a Legatee was travelling in France. The postcard was addressed to the Legatee Chairman of the Comradeship Committee. Dated 3 Feb 1983. It is signed GRIFF, it says: The French experience I should have had years ago. I am in the DORDONGE after spending some days at LA ROCHELLE on the Atlantic coast. The provincial French are courteous, generous, helpful and so elegant. Work I did with my French mistress at the Wesley Church has paid great dividends although today may be tough. I give 40 children (aged 10-14) their first ever Scottish Country dance lesson. The goose hatched in March lives a normal farmyard life till October, then it is force fed for three weeks and then 'WHAM' and PATE. Next meeting at Norton - France! 1934 was the year that Victoria celebrated the European settlement of Victoria. Events were planned through Victoria. In Kew a children's picnic was planned. The following newspaper report records what happened: KEW CHILDREN'S PICNIC. Owing to rain the picnic which the Kew Centenary celebrations committee had arranged for children resident in the municipality, which was to have taken place at Victoria Park yesterday, had to be postponed. The organisers decided to forward to the various schools the luncheons which had been prepared for the children and hurriedly made arrangements for their entertainment at a picture theatre. Needless to say the theatre was crowded to capacity, in addition to special pictures a punch and judy show was provided and a number of aborigines who are in Melbourne for the Centenary gave, exhibitions of native dances and corroborees. The trophies for the sports events are to do competed for at a later date. More than 100 blind readers responded to the invitation. A hearty welcome was give to two blinded soldiers, Sergeant Walshe and Private Glew. A musical programme followed, and the evening ended with the serving of light refreshments. This minutes includes a copy of the 41st & 42nd Annual Report 1935-1936 of the Entertainment Committee it noted that the Boat House, which was the gift of Mrs Cecil Macmeikan 10 years ago, was wholly destroyed during the storm in November however was repaired the next year.
