Cash Register, 1905-1906
Cash registers were used by businesses to store the money received for the transactions of goods and for recording the amount of money taken over a period of time e.g.. a day. This cash register is pre 1966, pre decimal currency and includes the halfpenny.Dudley Pigram who managed the Mongan's Bridge Caravan Park used this register. He brought it down to the Mt Bogong Clay Target Club in the 1970's although it is pre decimal currency. Dudley wass a founding member of the Clay Target Club.This brass cash register has a serial number indicating that it was made between 1905 and 1906. It is very heavy. A black metal cash register with glass across the top where the amount of the sale is displayed. There are 2 rows of keys - the top row left to right - 8/-, 6/-, 4/- 2/- with white background, 11d, 9d, 7d, 5d, 3d, 1d with red background. Bottom row left to right - 9/-, 7/- 5/- 3/- 1/- with white background, 10d, 8d, 6d, 4d, 2d, with red background plus a digital half d with a white background. Between the rows on the left is a 'No Sale' key. At the front of the register is a locked tray.Serial number S 33148. B.214KAA on a gold plaque below the glass display in the middle. Cream Separator
Dairy farms used cream separators to separate the milk and the cream before using it themselves or selling it to the dairy companies, shops or directly to the public.This cream separator was used by P & R Creamer on their dairy farm in the Kiewa Valley.3 parts - top brass lid with hollow cylinder enclosed across its top and extending beyond its circumference. 2. Stainless Steel hollow cylinders that fit the base and the lid but has 2 long curved spouts extending out - one for the milk and one for the cream to come out 3. Black cast iron stand that houses the gear mechanisms that drive the separator cones. The gear speed reduction wheel is on one side. Wringer - washing clothes
Wringers were used to wring clothes dry after washing. This is a manual one that can be attached to a trough or container that holds the washing. Later on washing machines were made with the wringer already attached and were operated by electricity. Afterwards washing machines spun the clothes dry as part of their cycle.This wringer was used by a resident of the Mount Beauty township during the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme in the 1940's and 1950's. White metal machine with 2 adjoining cloth cylinders in the middle. The metal rectangular shape forms a frame around the cylinders which have a metal shield above them and a metal flap below them. At the bottom, on each side is a protruding metal vice enabling the machine to be attached to a container. Sewing Machine
Sewing machines were used by some ladies to mend and make clothes for the family as shops were some distance away and bought clothes were much more expensive. The sewing machines were also used to sew items for fund raising e.g.. Church and School fetes.Used in the Kiewa Valley.The machine has a brown wood veneer base and a lid with a metal handle in the centre of the top. There is a long screw that fits in a hole at the top of the lid. The screw can be lifted out and used to open and take off the lid. Inside there is a black metal machine which is fitted onto the wooden base. There is a compartment in the base, right of the wheel of the machine, which holds an instruction manual and a tube of ""Singer" lubricant for electric machines". The light, above the needle is covered by bakelite. A leather belt runs around the wheel on the right to enable the machine to run. Milking Cups - Dairy
This milking equipment was used in the early days of milking using machines. The dairy industry is and has been one of the major industries of the Kiewa Valley. This equipment was used on local farmers, P & R. Creamer's dairy farm.Set of early mechanical milking cups. 4 cups - 2 each side of 2 hollow metal (steel) rods which are attached to hollow rubber tubes that lead towards the main milking machine. The metal cups have black ends at the opening where they are attached to the cow. Fan - S.E.C.V
Electric fans were used for cooling rooms prior to air conditioning.This portable fan was used on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme by office workers.Green metal swivel fan with base, motor and 4 cream angled 'wings' covered by 3 wire rings connected by 6 pieces of curved wire that cover the blades at the side and front. An electric grey rubber cord is attached. Pair of vehicle wheel traction devices
This traction device was made to increase traction and braking on slippery surfaces eg. snow / ice and can be fitted on two wheels on one or more axles of a vehicle. These devices can fit many wheel sizes. these 'snow chains' were used in the early 1970's.These vehicle traction devices were used at Falls Creek during winter.Rusted steel device used to grip vehicle wheels to enable traction over slippery surfaces. Four steel curved prongs connected at a solid steel rectangular centre. Each prong has teeth at the centre enabling it to fit through and be moved for tightening. The prongs are at 90 degrees to each other. The steel prongs are 'waved' on the outer wheel where they contact the surface of the ground. CWA Tawonga 1946 - 1988 collection of its written history. The C.W.A. aimed to improve the health, welfare and education of women and children in the country. The book gives examples of all activities the members were involved in over the years and their involvement with other CWA groups in the North East of Victoria. Bottle - Milk, After 1966
Milk bottles were bought at the local store. Metric measures were introduced in Australia in 1966. Bottles were recycled and remained the property of the manufacturer.Dairy farmers live in the Kiewa Valley and send their milk to the local dairy to be pasteurised and bottled. Historical: Bottles changed shape, size, embossing and seal. Fly killer liquid was used in manually operated sprays to kill insects in the home. This was used prior to aerosol cans being available.Common household item used before availability of aerosol cans.Insecticide. Brown straight sided glass bottle with tin screw lid. Base is rectangular in shape. Two thirds of the way up the sides taper to a round opening. The front and two sides are covered with a yellow paper label which is covered with mostly black writing. Soft drink came in bottles bought at the local grocery store or at a large city store on a shopping expedition. The shape of the bottles changed as did the stopper used to seal it.Historical: Change of bottles - shape, glass, stopper, embossing, use. Aesthetic: Display showing embossing and shape.Clear glass bottle with straight sides half way up tapering gently to a round opening. The tapered half is embossed with 7 wavy circles going around the circumference. The shape of the bottles changed as did the stopper used to seal it.Historical: Change of bottles - shape, glass, stopper, embossing, use Aesthetic: Display showing embossing and shape.Clear glass lemonade bottle with straight sides four fifths of the way up then tapering sharply in to form a neck and then the opening. At top of sides there is large embossed writing around the circumference. There are 3 rows of embossed writing towards the base on one side and some on the base. A bakelite stopper is screwed in. Whisky came in bottles bought at a hotel. The shape of the bottles changed as did the stopper used to seal it. Pre 1966 if this bottle was made in Australia.Historical: Change of bottles imperial v metric, shape, glass, stopper embossing, use. Stone ware bottles were used to store items such as ink for ink wells in schools and offices when ink pens were used.Jan may have used this bottle when working at the S.E.C. office. Bottle with Box - Office
Corrector fluid was used to cover typing mistakes before retyping over it upon drying. Correction fluid became available sold with a brush and was drier and therefore quicker to use. Computers then followed with 'delete' keys to correct mistakes. History of Gestetner Company.Jan worked as a typist in the S.E.C. offices and would have used corrector fluid when typing reports etc..Small bottle with no neck and with black bakelite lid. Inside there is a bright pink liquid of 'Corrector fluid'. Cardboard box containing the bottle is lined with cardboard and is red with white writing on the top and white with black writing on the bottom. Each side of the box is written the Brand name and Directions each side in different languages. Bottle - Cordial
Cordial was bought at the local grocery shop or supermarket in the bigger towns/cities. Glass bottles were used for cordial concentrate before plastic became more popular and cheaper. These bottles came in many shapes and sizes.Small clear glass bottle with rectangular base, straight sides two thirds of the way up and then tapering gradually to the opening. It has a metal goldish coloured lid. The label on the back gives directions for making cordial. Bottle - Clag
Clag was used in homes, schools and offices for sticking mostly paper and cardboard together. It was applied with a brush. In later years adhesives became varied with chemicals being combined enabling many different surfaces to be stuck together. Clag is a very basic form of adhesive.Clear glass round bottle gradually tapering from base to opening. It has an orange and white label with blue and white writing and titled 'Clag'. Folder - Mt Beauty, Early History of Mt Beauty, 2003
Alex McCullough was a resident of Mt Beauty for many years and wrote a book on the History of Mt Beauty. Mt Beauty was constructed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to house employees working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.Mt Beauty's history is unique as it was built as a construction town in the late 1940s. The information contained in the folder is a written history of the town's development. Alex, 1916 - 2011, worked as a foreman on Clover Dam. He served in WWII, was involved in the community (Mt Beauty & District Progress Association & Mt Beauty Neighbourhood Centre), achieved many awards, served as Shire Councillor and Mayor, was involved with tennis and golf committees.
