This bottle held "Peck's Fish Paste', The company, Harry Peck & Co., was founded in 1891 and soon began making potted meats and fish pastes in their factory in South London. Peck's Paste arrived in Australia in 1904. Peck's have been in Australia for over 110 years and manufacture food pastes. The principal product is a fish paste called Anchovette. From 1845, separate and competing volunteer fire brigades were established in Melbourne and grew in number. Following the passage of the Fire Brigades Act 1890 and the creation of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) on 1 May 1891, the 56 volunteer brigades that then existed were disbanded and the firefighters were invited to join the MFB. The MFB was abolished in 2020 and the firefighters absorbed into the newly established Fire Rescue Victoria.White coloured rectangular shaped card printed in black on both sides. This was presented to the Rev Yule on 22 February 1907. Alexander Yule was born in 1830 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland becoming licenced in the Free Church of Scotland in 1854. He came to Australia in 1870 where he became Minister of Erskine church, Carlton. In 1892 College Church Parkville was established by members of the Erskine congregation. In 1891 he was moderator of Victoria. Dugald Cameron, a son of Ewen and Marion Cameron, née McDougall, was born at Ashby in 1855 and died in Ballarat in 1930. Dugald Cameron married Mary Elizabeth Gates in 1891. Mary Cameron died in 1931. Dugald and Mary are buried in Linton cemetery. Dugald Cameron acted for a number of years as Secretary to the Presbyterian Sunday School in Linton. Lancelot Herbert came to Orbost in 1886, taking up a partnership with local store-owner George Temple. After Mr Temple’s death in 1891, Lancelot took over the store and progressively developed Herberts Snowy River Stores which grew into a department store of several shops along Nicholson StThis is a pictorial record of transport in 19th century Orbost. Glass, Medicine H London Chemist, Early 20th century
This is a small medicine measuring glass supplied by the Warrnambool pharmacy of Harry London. Born in England, Harry London, a chemist and dentist, came to Warrnambool in 1891, occupying the Nettleton building at 95 Liebig Street. In 1896 he built new premises at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets and in 1905 his was the first shop in Warrnambool to have electric lighting. He was succeeded in the early 1920s by the chemists, Dougall and Easton. This glass is of considerable significance because it came from the pharmacy of Harry London, an important chemist in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It also shows the custom of the time of chemists supplying to customers small glasses for measuring out medicine. This is a small thick glass tumbler used for measuring medicine. It is etched with the measurements of teaspoon, dessertspoon and tablespoon and the name of the supplier, H. London, a Warrnambool chemist and dentist. It has the initials of the maker on the base. Set of Braun's craniotomy forceps used by Box Hill Hospital labour ward, Allen & Hanburys, England
Carl Rudolph Braun (1823-1891) was the inventor of this instrument, as well as a type of decapitation hook. Braun was born and practiced in Austria, and followed Semmelweis as assistant to Klein at the Vienna Maternity Clinic in 1847, before becoming its head in 1856. Braud added a gynaecology section to the clinic in 1858, being convinced that obstetrics and gynaecology should be together. (Source: Baskett, Thomas. 'On the Shoulders of Giants: Eponyms and Names in Obstetrics and Gynaecology'). This device was included with a range of other obstetric instruments, mostly destructive instruments, given to RANZCOG from Box Hill Hospital labour ward in February- March 1998. The maternity service at Box Hill Hospital combined with St George's hospital in Kew to be known as Birralee Maternity Service. These instruments were collected by Julie Collette, Unit Manager, St George's Kew and given to RANZCOG Museum Curator, Susan Barnett.Craniotomy forceps, Braun's. Stainless steel forceps, with wingnut. Upper blade has open oval section and ridged grip section on the handle. Lower blade has serrated inner edge and ridged grip section on the handle. The Maldon-Laanacoorie railway line was never completed so Shelbourne became to termination point of this line. The station and railway yards opened in 1891 ad were last used in 1969 after bushfires had destroyed bridges on the line. The advertised St Patrick's Day race meeting was held on Saturday 18th March and a special train for patrons was run form Castlemaine, leaving at 1.15pm and returning at 7pm.Bendigo Advertiser '' the way we were'' from 2002. In 1881 Cyrus Bath Retallack purchased land now known as 1200 Mair Street Ballarat. Retallack was a successful Cornish miner and engineer. He built a two storey brick mansion between 1882 and 1883, naming the property ‘Carn Brae’ after the castle in Cornwall. Substantial grounds were established with with range of exotic trees planted, a tennis court was laid out and a stables building was erected. In 1918 the site become a campus of Queen’s GIrls’ Grammar School, then Aquinas College which was merged into the Australian Catholic University from 1973. The house was designed in 1924 by Harold Desbrowe Anneal and described as ahead of its time. Born in Happy Valley, Bendigo, Victoria in 1865, Desbrowe Annear was the elder son of James Annear, mining contractor, and Eliza Ann (née Hawkins). In 1883, Desbrowe-Annear was articled to Melbourne architect William Salway and during this time his interest and knowledge of architecture grew extensively. In 1889 he chose to pursue a practice of his own having already received recognition for his architectural sketches and papers delivered to the Victorian Institute of Architects.
