Book, Ian Anderson et al, We did open a school in Little Eltham : Eltham Primary School 209, 1856-2006, a history/ Ian Anderson, Barry Carozzi and Tarja Fellowes, 2006
The 150th celebrations of Eltham Primary School included the launch of this book to commemorate the event, titled "We Did Open a School in Little Eltham". The title is taken from a line in a letter from first head teacher David Clark who opened his first private school in a bark hut. This publication of some 262 pages far exceeds the standard of most school commemorative histories, both in content and presentation. The three joint writers are all parents of students at the school. Ian Anderson, Barry Carozzi and Tarja Fellowes have spent many months researching and writing. In the book they acknowledge the contribution of EDHS President Harry Gilham and of Peter Cuffley, great grandson of Eltham pioneer Thomas Sweeney, Many of the photographs were from the collection of EDHS. Illuminated Address
The names come from a variety of areas, from as far away as Glenmaggie, and may reflect who contributed a set sum for a presentation. Appears to have originally been framed. Fritz Horstman was first chair of the Upper Maffra Co-operative Butter and Cheese Factory in 1904.An important example of a locally-produced Illuminated address, as opposed to those of a more grandiose nature that were purchased from "outside".Illuminated address, unframed, presented Dec 1885 to Fritz Horstman, following his representing residents in the Maffra Shire for seven years. Signatories are: H. Amey, A. Allardyce, G. Lyndon, J. Gerrand, H. Crisp, T. Smith, indec, J. Atkinson, D. Miller, N.Nicholson, T. Martin, W. Clement, A. Clark, J.W. Hagan, T. Pollock, Osborn Bros, T. Folder - Mt Beauty Gra-y Club Senior Group Attendance Record, Mt Beauty Gra-y Club Senior Group
The Athletics Club (began April 1951) under the guidance of a committee of workers which included Mr Stan Hemmings and Mr Alex McCullough, sponsored a Junior Athletics Club which became the Gra-Y Club (in August 1951) for young boys and Hy-Y for older lads. Mr A. E. Clark (YMCA) had the idea of adopting the American Gra-Y system which was to instil in boys good principals and values similar to those of the service clubs ie. YMCA, the Masons and Buffalo Lodge. Story has it that the town was virtually crime free for many years. The Athletics Club became a very powerful force in Mt Beauty and assisted other fledging groups to get started. The committee had the bright idea that they could raise money and entertain the men who lived in the out-lying camps by running sporting exhibitions by their members and the Gra-y boys for entertainment.Mt Beauty was a SECV construction town at the end of the Kiewa valley. Its remoteness encouraged the community to create clubs for recreation for all age groups so that those involved would be purposefully engaged. The Gra-Y club achieved this for 4.5 year olds to 12 year olds and included a junior group and a senior group.Manila folder, foolscap size, with seven pages held by four staples at the spine. Link to 524. Grace Elizabeth Jennings Carmichael (1867-1904), poet and nurse, was born on 24 February 1867 at Ballarat, Victoria, daughter of Archibald Carmichael, a miner from Perthshire, Scotland, and his wife Margaret Jennings, née Clark, from Cornwall, England. . About 1880 the family moved to Gippsland where Henderson managed a station near Orbost. Grace learned to love the Gippsland forest. She began to express in verse her understanding of the sights, scents and sounds of the bush, often writing in some remote clearing, her manuscripts stored for privacy in a hollow trunk. The Bairnsdale Advertiser published her first story, and the Weekly Times an early poem; then on 28 November 1885 her poem 'The Old Maid' was published in the Australasian under her pen name Jennings Carmichael. Encouraged by its editor, David Watterston, Grace sent nearly all her subsequent verse to that newspaper. Greeting card from Neville Emerson and Staff with sketch commissioned by Neville Emerson Real Estate. The image was also used on the Wiregrass Gallery calendar for 1982 or 1983 Jarrold Cottage Set only metres from Eltham's busy Main Road is this striking reminder of a bygone era. Built in the 1850s, this small cottage, also known as White Cloud or Skippers Cottage, is one of the oildest buildings in Eltham. In the tiny shop at the side of the cottage locals could have their boots soled by Mr. John Henry Clark, the boot and harness maker (and former photographer of note) who boarded with the Jarrolds. "he did a first rate job!" recalls one enthusiastic local. Aside from its early temporary use as Eltham's first Police Station, Jarrold Cottage also attracted attention from one writer in 1902 because of its "Surrey or Sussex village" qualities and its " essentially English" village pond. Remnants of the original pond are still visible amongst the willows.Christmas card 9.5 x 19.5 cmart, bill caldwell, main road, white cloud cottage, artist, fay bridge collection, neville emerson real estate, sketches, wiregrass gallery calendar -

35mm Slide, Keel Glasshouse at the Botancal Gardens circa mid 1950s
A delightfully framed shot of the Botanical Gardens in the mid to late 1950s. We can be reasonably sure of the date of this image because it shows the Keel House conservatory. Designed and fabricated in England, it was then re-assembled in the Ballarat Gardens in 1906. It was purely for display, only allowing public viewing through glass windows at either end. It became known as the Keel House because the roofline resembled a boat hull. The Keel House was replaced in 1959 by Cuthbert House, another conservatory which also did not allow public access. Cuthbert House was replaced in 1995 by the present Robert Clark conservatory, which allows public access for the first time. Note other details in this photograph, the sprinkler at full bore and the little boy hiding behind the sundial. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. When Mrs Strange died some years ago, her extensive slide collection was sorted through and those relevant to Ballarat were gifted to the Ballarat Library.greenhouse, glasshouse, keel glasshouse, garden, building, public building, ballarat botanical garden -

book, Grace Elizabeth Jennings Carmichael
This book was produced with a grant from the Victorian Government Dept of State and Regional Development. (Read more by Lindsay Gardiner in Australian Dictionary of Biography.)This is a useful collection of the poetry of Jennings Carmichael, a leading Australian poet who spent much of her childhood in Orbost.A thin, stapled, yellow covered paperback book. It is titled "Grace Elizabeth Jennings Carmichael" and is a limited edition print of Carmichael's poetry. Print is black.poetry literature jennings-carmichael -
