View looking up from near the Eltham Railway Trestle Bridge over what was to become the Eltham Common at Shillinglaw Cottage in its new location prior to restoration. The former Gahan house, seen in the background was demolished in 1968 when the Main Road was duplicated in this section. The Eltham Common was taken over with the construction of the new Eltham Library which opened in 1994.Shillinglaw Cottage is itself historically, aesthetically and socially significant to the Shire of Nillumbik and is registered on the Victorian Heritage Database. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Redruth Gaol was constructed in 1856. It was the first South Australian gaol to be built outside Adelaide. The goal was built to house 30 prisoners (male and female). It closed in 1897 at which time the prisoners were transferred to Gladstone Gaol. The former Redruth Gaol was renovated and started a new life as a Girls' Reformatory in 1897 and closed in 1922. On 4th August 1978 the construction of the Goonawarra Estate commenced. The estate was formerly known as the Goonawarra Farm and overlooked the Sunbury farm and the Jacksons Creek valley. Plans for the new development included a golf course, houses, community and recreational facilities. This is the 22nd edition of the "Wright and Round's amateur band teacher's guide and bandsman's adviser". This book was produced by the Wright & Round music publishing house and is made up of articles on instructing brass bands as well as articles on music theory and instruments. In addition there are numerous pages to the back of the book that highlight all the brass band music that had been published by Wright & Round from 1875.This book is significant as it provides historical detail on brass band instruction in the early 1900's. There is a wealth of information here; on instruments, theory, playing, technique, conducting and other aspects of teaching. The President in 1988 was Alf Argent. His comments were very brief but included praise for the staff at Legacy House and for fellow legatees. "The Legacy movement is comradeship and assistance." The presidential year ran from March to the following February. Was in a binder of documents that is passed from an outgoing President to the incoming President. It is primarily from the 1930s to 1990s. "Kilbeggin Cottage" front gate, picket fence and garden obscures the weatherboard house over two blocks at 7 - 9 John Street, Eltham. Possibly a "For Sale" sign is at the side of the photograph for 11 John Street next door. Built about 1878 for carpenter Richard Bettison, John Street is part of the original Holloway subdivison in the area known as Little Eltham. The Margaret Ball (Pre 1960s Houses) Collection was a personal project initiated to mark the year 2000 and arose as a result of the disappearance of many pre-1960s parts of Eltham due to development. Approximately 200 pre-1960s style houses that were left in Eltham between Main Road and east to Bible Street, between Cecil Street to the north and south to Dalton Street were photographed in late 1999. The City of Bendigo asked for a heritage overlay over the site of a private Kennington observatory. It was once used for for the City's official meteorological readings. The observatory was built by architect John Beebe and is on the storm damaged property part of "La Rocca" house. The ship Speke ran aground on the coast of Phillip Island on the 22nd of February 1906. The ship was painted by Artist Woolston L Barratt in 1891 and hung in the saloon of the Speke. It was given by Captain Tilston to John Cleeland, captain of the rocket rescue team and the painting used to hang in his home Wollomai house on Phillip Island. It was restored by Mal Campbell to fix smoke damage.The Speke was an all steel ship built in Wales in 1891, the second largest 3-masted full-rigged ship in the world. She was delivering wheat to Geelong and confused a bushfire in Cowes for navigation lights.
