Piece of worn trolley wire (copper, probably cadmium copper) taken from north bound trolley wire between poles 9 and 17 (Loop and St. Aidans Drive) on 4/3/1997 during replacement operations. Is badly worn on one side. OK on the other side - slightly curve with worn side on the outside of the curve. Green (Oxidized) and sides, dark brown on top. Has been cut at either end. This shirt was manufactured in 2004, and was presumably owned by a Beechworth local service personnel by the name of Cross. This piece of clothing would have been worn as part of the standard Royal Australian Naval Ratings uniform.White short sleeved shirt. Square collar with thin navy blue trim. Has bird standing on a branch as part of the badge. A metal insert which can be changed over to show the year of membership shows the year "54". Metal insert has two lugs on the rear which can be folded over. On the rear is a metal pin that can be put vertically through a jacket and the manufacturers name "K. Luke Melb". The Community Centre was built in the early 1950’s as an all-purpose hall for the social and recreational use of the workers and families employed on the Victorian state government Kiewa Hydro-electric scheme. The hall was originally called Mt Beauty Recreation Centre and later changed to Mt Beauty Community Centre. It has been the heart of the community for over 65 years and had a heritage listing put on it around the year 2000. The Alpine Shire secured a heritage grant and the hall was restored to its former glory in 2000. Charles Leslie Mitton (1905-1968) was a pharmacist at 131 Union Road, Surrey Hills from 1933-1968. DOD 30/04/1968. Prior to coming to Surrey Hills, he was a pharmacist in Newmarket (Ref: 1931 electoral roll). He and his wife, Ethel Sylvia Elizabeth Mitton (nee Stevenson) lived at 65 Union Road. They were married in 1933 and had 2 sons and a daughter. He was followed in the business by his son John and daughter Rosalind. Alice Sedgman (nee Percy) – 1873-1945 Alice was born in Maldon in 1873, one of 9 children of William Henry Percy and his wife Unice King. Alice married Francis Sedgman, occupation painter, in 1896 and they went on to have 8 children, all born in Kew or Hawthorn before the family came to Surrey Hills. The electoral roll for 1903 shows the family living in Liddiard Street in Hawthorn and Alice’s occupation is given as home duties. It is the same in 1909 when they are living at 65 Croydon Road, Surrey Hills and continues to be thus listed in all electoral rolls until the 1943 edition, just before her death. However Mrs Sedgman was also an active nurse and midwife who often worked with Dr James Blakie, who had arrived in Surrey Hills in 1905, initially practicing from 171 Union Road and then in 1913 moving across the road to the purpose-built home and practice at 174 Union Road, now Surrey Hills Medical Centre. At this period most babies were born at home. Sometime after 1931 Alice and Francis Sedgman moved from 65 Croydon Road into 10 Grovedale Road and lived with their son Francis William Sedgman and his family for the remainder of their lives. The photo shows Mrs Alice Sedgman in early 1930s with grand-daughter Joy in the garden of her son. Behind her can be seen the fenced 'quarry' which is now parkland. Alice died in 1945 and Francis in 1951. They are buried in Boroondara Cemetery along with an infant son Clarence and daughter Marjorie. William Lawrence Bragg was born in Adelaide in 1890. Lawrence was only fifteen years old when he started study at the University of Adelaide. In 1908 he graduated with a first-class honours degree in mathematics. He worked as a professor of physics at the University of Manchester in 1919-1938 and at Cambridge in 1938-54. He shared the Nobel Prize in 1915 with his father, Sir William Henry Bragg at the age of twenty-five "for their services in the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays". He died in Waldringfield, England, 1 July 1971. Red hardcovered book with black and white illustrations. Research provided by Stuart Tompkins Studio, Box Hill, into alternatives for median strip street lighting to be used in Burke Road, Kew. The photographers identified variants in different suburbs appropriate to Kew's needs.The series from which the photograph is drawn provides a snapshot by a commercial photographic studio of each named vicinity in 1965 as well as providing examples of public works infrastructure being commissioned by local government in the 1960s.
