Standard issue blocked brown leather rifle bucket for attachment to the Pattern 1912 UP saddle. Rifle buckets were used by British and Commonwealth mounted troops from the First World War to around 1941. In the Australian Light Horse units their use did not become common until the end of the First World War. This photograph depicts flooding of Ozone Avenue in Beaumaris, located off Balcombe Road. Roads in the Beaumaris area lacked sufficient drains to clear surface water. In many cases streets were unsealed and without footpaths and some were dirt tracks. Gutters and road surfaces were made of clay and in the wetter months of winter, unsealed roads and tracks became impossible quagmires that were unnavigable for vehicles and pedestrians. In the first decade after World War II there was rapid expansion in construction of new houses in the suburb of Beaumaris. Utilities and infrastructure to support the growth of housing was inadequate and not provided for prior to the development of the area. Without rudimentary drainage, flooding was frequent. Storm water runoff, domestic sullage and septic tank overflow would form large pools and families were sometimes marooned within their homes. The frequent flooding caused isolation and hardship and residents endured difficulties with accessibility to facilities. The photo of widows Jo Stanley and Muriel Love is accompanied by the article 'Picking up the pieces'. They were helped by Legacy when their husbands passed away. Muriel nursed her husband and after his death found a void, Legacy was a 'lifesaver'. Jo joined the younger widows club where each of them still have children on their hands so they have more in common and meet every second month. A 2 page double spread feature in the Herald Sun on 29th August 2000 to promote Legacy prior to Legacy Week. The photo of Legatees Rob Allison and Denise Milic is accompanied by the article 'Denise gives it back'. Denise was helped by Legacy when her father, who had served in World War 2, died when she was 12. Denise now joined Legacy to help the older Legatees who have had to slow down their involvement. Until 1996 Legatees were people who had served in the forces. Then it was extended to include Junior Legatees who were the children of servicemen who had died. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance on 11 April 1990, the guest speaker was Commodore Jim Dickson. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. As well as photos of the ceremony and a fly past of four aircraft there are photos of three widows attending. The elderly lady in white on the left is Mrs Winifred Fotheringham who is also in 00579. She helped launch the 1990 Legacy week as she had reached 101 years of age (see 01045). This was the 59th Annual Commemoration service for school students. Photos were taken by Susie Howard who was publicity officer for Legacy at the time. Photos of a procession of widows and legatees to the Shrine in 1992. These photos were in a scrapbook of photos from 1992. The pilgrimage was led down St. Kilda Road by the Hawthorn City Pipe Band (it may have started at St Paul Cathedral as there is a church service prior to the pilgrimage). A junior legatee is the flag bearer of the yellow Legacy flag. Sir Weary Dunlop can be seen in the march. President Swan and the President of the Widows' Club, Inez Bruce, are seen carrying wreaths to be laid. This is an annual event for Legacy widows, sometimes referred to as Widows' Sunday. It is usually at the start of Legacy Week, which is usually the first week in September. The timetable for activities was published in The Answer (prior to Sept 1992 it was called the Melbourne Legacy Widows' Newsletter) each month.
