George Eddington arrived in Australia in 1839 and named and established property in 1841 calling the property Ballangeich after a Pass near his home town of Stirling in Scotland. It is situated 151 miles west of Melbourne and to the south of Mortlake and was originally part of the Mortlake shire, which was proclaimed 26th Jan 1864. Nearest streams are the Hopkins Riverand Lyall and Drysdale creek running through good agricultural land. This map relates to the breaking up of large runs which the Victorian government enabled through selection acts of the 1860's. The previously larger runs which were mainly cattle and sheep based were now more open to closer settlement and a greater variety in farming.The lots range in size from approximately 50 acres to around 600 acres.Some areas are set aside for reserves. By 1886 the population of Ballangeich had grown to around 600 with an hotel, three state schools and a church.Tri weekly coaches ran to Colac, Warrnambool and Camperdown providing access to supplies mail and communication. This letter book contains letters, sketch maps and plans and dates from1934 to 1936. It originally came from the office of John William Crawley Junior, an engineer, surveyor and architect in private practice in Warrnambool and also the Shire Engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were also engineers and worked in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. The letter book was also used in the private practice of John Crawley’s son, Rolf who was the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. The letter book then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the letter book, along with several other Crawley ledgers, from the estate of Michael Hand.This letter book is of considerable significance as it contains letters written by John Crawley and Rolf Crawley who were in an engineering, surveying and architects private practice in Warrnambool over the time covered in the book. It will be very useful to researchers. This is a hard cover book of 1000 pages but only 354 pages have been used. The cover is bound at the corners and on the spine with buff-coloured leather. This booklet is a 1932 catalogue of the Floral Farm in Warrnambool. It was established by Charles Allen Jukes who had first opened a plant nursery at Cudgee on the banks of the Cudgee Creek. Early in the 20th century the nursery, the Floral Farm, was re-located to East Warrnambool with the boundary of the property extending along Raglan Parade, Flaxman and Bostock Streets. . A very high paling fence, topped with vertical slats was erected around the property. The Floral Farm continued for some time (with Charles Allen Jukes dying in 1934) and the nursery land was sub-divided for housing. Charles Allen Jukes’ parents, Alfred and Margaret came to Warrnambool in 1856, with Alfred setting up a law business and at one time being the honorary Town Clerk of Warrnambool. This booklet is of historical interest as it is a catalogue of the plants and seedlings available in the early 1930s from the Jukes Floral Farm in East Warrnambool. This is a supplement issued by the Weekly Times newspaper in 1896 to commemorate the opening of the Warrnambool Industrial ad Art Exhibition in November 1896. The exhibition ran for three months in the Warrnambool Town Hall/Mechanics Institute area with some temporary buildings. The attendance was recorded as 70,000, making it one of the biggest events ever held in Warrnambool. There were displays, competitions, concerts and operas and sporting and cultural events. The exhibition was historically important as being the time and place when the earliest surviving sound recordings made in Australia were produced by Tommy Rome on an Edison phonograph. The supplement came from the estate of Bruce Morris, the editor of the Warrnambool Standard from 1946 to 1968 and an important Warrnambool historian.This paper, although tattered is a most important souvenir of the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7, a significant event in Warrnambool’s history. This is a book produced by the Keswick Book depot to promote its collection of Christian literature and to give information about conventions held at its Upwey centre. It is apparently a Protestant publication. This booklet is of minor interest as a religious publication that came from a local Warrnambool resident.This is a soft covered booklet of 80 pages. This typewriter belonged to Gordon William Toleman (1910-1975). The first known Toleman born in the Western District was born at Mortlake in 1845 and Gordon Toleman was also born in Mortlake. He lived with his family in Warrnambool for many years. He was an accountant the Nestles Factory at Dennington for over 25 years. He was actively involved in community affairs, including the Warrnambool Urban Fire Brigade (life member), the Florado Festival, the Warrnambool Olympic Pool committee and the Merrivale and Terang Football Clubs (player and captain). He was also a life member of the Hampden Football League as a long-term Secretary and Treasurer and a secretary of the Warrnambool Football Club.This typewriter is of interest as one belonging to Gordon Toleman, a Warrnambool 20th century resident and a person well-known for his involvement in community activities..1 This is a metal typewriter with black and grey keys and a red and black typewriting ribbon. A letter copying press was first developed by James Watt in 1780. Copying clerks were employed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to copy letters and documents. In this press a sheet of oiled paper was inserted next to a dampened piece of tissue in the copying book. An unblotted letter written in special copying ink was then inserted with its face up against the back of the tissue. The book was then put into the press and screwed down tightly for a few minutes, depending on how many copies were being made. Many of these old letter books with important historical information still clearly legible survive today. This letter copying press is of great interest as it shows how letters and documents were duplicated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is of relevance to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society as its historical collection includes many letter books with copies of letters and documents relating to our local history.This is a metal letter copying press. It has a rectangular base with an over-arching curved metal piece and a handle which was able to be turned around to screw down a book. In 1868, Walter Sheldrick, a Warrnambool butcher, established a company to operate the Warrnambool New Brewery (at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets). The company was wound up but the brewery continued to operate as Sheldrick and Co., with Walter Sheldrick and Thomas Price as principal partners. Sheldrick died in 1893 but the brewery continued with various partners in the business. In 1894 the brewery was sold to James W. McGee and Co. and this firm operated the brewery until its demise in 1922 when it was bought out by the Ballarat, Melbourne Co-Operative and Carlton and United Breweries and closed. This demijohn is of interest as it came from the Warrnambool New Brewery (closed 1922). This brewery, known as Sheldrick’s was a prominent business in Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a circular-shaped stone jar enclosed in a wicker case with handles. The jar has a circular yellow top with no stopper. ‘James W. This splendid medal was awarded by the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association in 1879. This association held its first show in Port Fairy in 1854 and in Warrnambool in 1855. It continues to this day under the name of the Warrnambool and District Agricultural Society. The medal was awarded to James Astley Bromfield, am early Warrnambool chemist who arrived in Victoria in 1852 and is significant in Warrnambool’s history. He produced the 1856 map of the Warrnambool district with the first landowners, a seminal resource for historians and was prominent in community affairs, especially in horse racing. He was also a Warrnambool and Shire Councillor. The medal was awarded for the best blood yearling of 1879 and this was Fright, one of the progeny of the famous stud horse Panic (second in the Melbourne Cup, 1865), His progeny won many hurdle races and flat races including the Melbourne Cup. The medal features also the names of two donors of prizes to James Bromfield, Henry Phillips and Francis Tozer, both pioneer men in Warrnambool’s horse racing history. Henry Phillips was the first President of the Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club and had the horse Panic standing at his 1000 acre stud, Bryan O’Lynn, at Purnim in the Western District. Francis Tozer was an owner, breeder and steward in racing circles and in the 1870s had the 2000 acre stud farm, Wangoom Park, at Wangoom, near Warrnambool.This is a most significant item as it was awarded to James Astley Bromfield, an early Warrnambool chemist and a person concerned with the history of the early settlement of Warrnambool and one prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool in the 19th century. The item also has connections with the famous stud horse, Panic and two other noted personalities of Warrnambool and district, Francis Tozer and Henry Phillips. The item also is of intrinsic monetary value as a 19th century medal from the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association. This is a round silver medal. It has etched printing on one side and raised images of farm animals and farm implements on the other side. It also has etched printing around the edge of the medal. This booklet is the 98th Annual Report (1952) for the Warrnambool & District Base Hospital. The Warrnambool Hospital was established in 1854 and was then also a Benevolent Asylum for elderly people. In 1952 the centre for elderly people was at Alveston in Cramer Street, Warrnambool and was part of the services of the Warrnambool Hospital. This booklet is of interest as it is an annual report for the Warrnambool Hospital (1952) and will be useful for researchers. This is a booklet of 25 pages. In 1854 in Melbourne George Rolfe Senior established an import business dealing in groceries, wines and spirits and tea. His son George, born in England, took over the business of Rolfe and Co in 1871. A keen sportsman, George Rolfe’s love of fishing led him to take frequent holidays in Warrnambool. He began buying blocks of land near the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool in the 1870s. By the 1880s Rolfe owned 50 acres in the Hopkins River area and named the property, Lyndoch. He built stables, chaff and bone sheds, a jetty, a boatshed, a water well, a windmill, a reservoir and extensive gardens. He also bought the nearby properties of Shipley and Fairy Hill, establishing a stud farm and breeding cattle. In 1891 he married Jane Ann Lake, the widow of his property manager, and when he died in 1919 his step-daughters, Florence and Annie Lake, inherited Lyndoch. The property was sold and became an aged care facility in 1952. The cutlery items were in use in the building erected by Florence Lake in 1920 and known today as Lyndoch but the ‘R’ monogram on the items suggest that they belonged to George Rolfe or even his father before him.These cutlery items are of considerable importance as mementoes of George Rolfe and his family. They were prominent in Warrnambool’s history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the establishment and development of the property, Lyndoch, near the mouth of the Hopkins River. These are 17 pieces from a silver cutlery set that belonged to the Rolfe family (one tablespoon, six large forks, five smaller forks, four small spoons and one mustard spoon.) All the pieces of cutlery have a monogrammed ‘R’ at the end of the handles. Twelve of the items are tarnished and one small spoon is very worn. This stool appears to have been home-made. It was used in the days (first half of the 20th century) when cows were mostly milked by hand. It was most likely to have been used to milk a house cow, perhaps in Warrnambool or a nearby town. The cow would have been kept during the day time on the town common and brought back to the home for milking and returned to the common the next day. The production of milk, cheese and butter has been an important industry in the Warrnambool district since the second half of the 19th century, with the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford being established in 1888. It is the oldest surviving dairy company in Australia. This stool is of considerable interest as an example of the stools used when cows were hand milked and when many households in the towns and outer areas had a house cow to supply milk for the household. This is a hand-made wooden milking stool with a rectangular piece of wood for the seat and four rounded legs that taper slightly outwards. This book, written by Melbourne barrister, Mark McNamara, gives details on the history of horse racing in Warrnambool. The first race meeting was held in Warrnambool in 1848, only eight months after the establishment of the new settlement. The Warrnambool Racing Club was formed in 1873 and the first race meeting at the present-day Warrnambool Racecourse was held in 1858. Horse racing has always been a prominent and popular sport in Warrnambool. The best-known race held annually in Warrnambool is the Grand Annual Steeplechase, run as part of the three- day May Racing Carnival, a major event in Warrnambool. This book is of major interest as it documents the history of the Warrnambool Racing Club, an organization that has operated in Warrnambool since 1873. The annual Warrnambool May Racing Carnival is one of the premier jumps racing events in Australia. The book will be very useful to researchers. This is a soft-cover book of 409 pages. This book was written by Roland (Corker) Brown. His forebears were pioneers in the Wyelangta area of the Otway Ranges and he spent most of his life in that region. In this book he has recorded some of the history of the area and his personal recollections, starting from the 1930s when the last of the bullock and horse teams were transporting timber and the old mills were closing. This booklet, by Rosamund Duruz, gives the history of the schools in the Heytesbury Forest area. The Heytesbury Shire Council was established in 1863 and the first schools in the area opened in the 1870s. Most of them were closed when Timboon Consolidated School (later Timboon High School) opened in 1948. The Heytesbury Forest was largely deforested by the Bailey Closer Settlement Scheme of the 1930s and later the establishment of more farming properties in the 1950s. This Bible originally belonged to members of the Orr family, who came from Scotland and had a property at Addington near Learmonth in central Victoria (from the 1860s). Many families in the 19th and early 20th centuries had family bibles which were read individually by family members or read aloud to family members, especially on a Sunday. Many of these large-size bibles were used to record family information (births, deaths, marriages), though this one does not have any information recorded. This Bible is retained as a splendid example of a 19th century family Bible. It will be very useful for display. This is a hard-cover book with gilt edging on the pages. It has a leather cover with heavy gold embossing on the front and back covers. Inserted in the embossing are gold religious symbols and images. The Bible contains 45 chapters with the Old and New Testaments and other biblical and religion- related articles. There are many black and white illustrations and some colour illustrations. This tin came from the Sunshine Biscuit Factory in Ballarat. James Long established a confectionery business in Ballarat in 1854 and in 1921 it was known as the Sunshine Biscuit Company. In 1923 the factory was destroyed by fire and rebuilt. During World War Two 80% of the factory products went to the armed services. In 1947 the company was known as Ballarat Products Ltd and in 1962 it was called Sunshine Biscuits Ltd. In 1977 the factory was used to produce dry pet food (Friskies). The building was closed in 1991 and the site developed to include a supermarket, shops and housing. Up till about the late 1950s biscuits were mostly not packaged but sold loose by the pound in grocery stores from tins such as this. Broken biscuits were also sold at a cheaper price. Some biscuits were also sold at that time in smaller tins. This tin is of interest as an example of the tins from which biscuits were sold in the first half of the 20th century. It will be useful for display.This is a rectangular-shaped biscuit tin which is much rusted. The tin has a multi-coloured paper label that has been pasted around the sides. Much of this label has been torn away. The label shows images of biscuits. This kettle would have been used on top of a wood stove to boil water to make tea and other beverages and to use for other household purposes. It would have been a common household item in Australian homes from the beginning of European settlement up about the mid 20th century when wood stoves, although still in use in many country areas, were largely superseded by gas or electric stoves in most households. The kettle was made of durable material as it usually remained on the top of the stove for most of the day so that hot water was readily available. This is a baking dish of the type used in the early to mid 20th century. Its contents could have been savoury or sweet. Enamel items were hard-wearing and often used in country areas or for picnics or outdoor eating. Enamel items have been largely superseded by the use of plastic, china and Pyrex materials. This dish is retained as an example of a household item from the past. It will be useful for display.This is an enamel pie or meat dish. It is spherical in shape and is white with a blue edging. It is chipped around the rim and scratched on the base. There is a stamped imprint on the back with the maker’s name but only one word is decipherable. ‘Sweden’

This tin contained bulk tea which came from the Melbourne Mutual Store. Established in 1872 as a profit-sharing co-operative of shareholders and staff, Mutual Store Ltd was situated at the corner of Flinders and Degraves Street, Melbourne. Fire destroyed the building in 1891 and the new building erected is an important heritage building today. In 1961 Peter Kaye Consolidated Ltd bought the business and it then traded as Mutual Store Holdings Ltd. In 1964 Cleckheaton (from England) took over the business and closed the store in 1965. Tea tins such as this one would have been distributed by the Mutual Store to smaller businesses such as cafes or repackaged for sale at grocery shops etc. Bulk tea can still be bought but the main tea sales are now in the form of tea-bags. This tin is retained as a memento of the days in the 19th and early to mid 20th centuries when tea was sold only in bulk and provided in tins such as this by the importers to small grocery shops and the like. This is a tea tin, cylindrical in shape. It has a tight-fitting lid with a metal clip. There is blue and cream painting around the sides of the tin with images of Greek figures and a wreath with a ribbon. The tin is much scratched and rusted. Scales such as these were used to measure commercial quantities possibly grains and farm produce for quite large amounts of product.Bags of the product would have been hooked up and weighed. Salter has been a name long associated with weights and measures. Salters had their beginnings in England in the 1760's with a background in springs which are a main component of many scales. The actual mechanism for weighing objects in such scales has remained similar for over two centuries.These scales would have been a common item in most commercial operations which bought and sold items in bulk and have historical and scientific significance.Cast iron frame with circular brass face painted black.. There is a round metal ring at the top which runs through a circular metal section of the frame. A hook is attached to the bottom of the frame through a similar metal circle. Sliding Gunter was the nom de Plume of Thomas Hamilton Tracey Osborne. Thomas Hamilton Tracey Osborne was born at Belfast 4/9/1851, the son of Thomas Hamilton Trail Osborne and his second wife Eliza nee Treacey. The young Thomas spent many hours among seamen and ships at Port Fairy. He moved to Warrnambool and commenced work as secretary to the Western Steam Navigation Company becoming manager in 1883. After the company failed he joined with Mark Saltau and they traded as Saltau and Osborne. His writings as Sliding Gunter appeared in The Warrnambool Standard and the Belfast Gazette. He was knowlegable and maintained an interest in shipping and the sea. He died in 11th December 1902 and his body was taken on board the Julia Percy and was buried at sea out from the Breakwater. He was well liked in the district and people lined the Cannon Hill area and the foreshore to farewell him. As an avid writer he corresponded with many people and this letter is one such letter The writer J J Crawford from Koroit tells the story of some of his family and their travels to Australia and early years in South Australia. THis collection of cuttings relates to the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company.The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company was established in 1868 when capital was raised with 2000 shares at a value of five pounds each.It was established to provide passenger, accommodation and a large stock and freight service between Warrnambool and Melbourne.. At the time Stephen Henty was operating three steamers along the coast and at the prospect of losing his Warrnambool trade with the establishment of the new Warrnambool company, he sold one of his steamers , the Edina in March 1868. The first five directors elected were F P Stevens, J G Crammond, WW Jamieson, R B Paterson and George Wood. Fares were from one to three pounds and freight was 17 shillings per ton.The steamers connected with coaches from the north of Warrnambool as far as Hamilton. The cuttings record the financial position of the company for the first ten years. This collection of cuttings is valuable as a research item as it documents the development and operation as well as many of the stake holders in one of Warrnambool's earliest shipping companies. This item has been brought back to Australia by a returning soldier from World War One (1914-1918). At a time when France was completely disrupted by the ravages of war many French women, especially those in rural areas, earned a living by making souvenir pieces of embroidery to sell to soldiers in the Allied forces. These embroidered pieces took the form of postcards, doyleys, centerpieces, handkerchiefs etc. The items are noted for the handcraft skills shown by the makers and are prized by collectors today. This item, although fragile, is of considerable interest, firstly as an attractive embroidered piece and secondly, because of its association with World War One as an example of the souvenirs brought back from France to Australia by returning soldiers. This is an oblong-shaped handkerchief or doyley. It has a pink or mauve silk square in the middle with a coloured motif embroidered in one corner. This s a shield with representations of several European flags and embroidered wording underneath. The silk square is edged in a wave pattern in pink. The square has a white lace border. The Loyal Victoria Lodge was established in Warrnambool in1862. It was a Lodge connected with the Friendly Society Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. Friendly Societies were established to give members assistance in times of illness and hardship and to offer insurance against such events. The MUIOOF had its origins in Manchester, England. The Warrnambool Lodge built the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street in 1869 and in 1872 it joined with other friendly societies and established the Friendly Societies Park in Koroit Street. The MUIOOF joined with the Australian Natives Association and today the new name in Australian Unity. No details are available on W. A. McLean but the certificate indicates that he served his country during World War Two.This certificate is of considerable interest as the Loyal Victoria Lodge was a pioneer friendly society in Warrnambool with its history going back to 1862. It is also a good example of the certificates given to Warrnambool residents who had rendered significant war time service in World War Two.Framed Certificate featuring text and a coloured picture. The picture includes: a dove, five scrolls, a laurel wreath surrounding a globe, three women in long dresses, three young children, two stylised flower beds, rays of light, a hill and four coats of arms. This plate was probably shortened to fit an office or factory door. Alexander Robinson (1862-1932) established a coachbuilding business in Fairy Street Warrnambool in 1880. In 1883 he joined with Fred Morse to set up the coachbuilding business of Robinson and Morse. This firm was noted for its production of fine Abbott buggies. Later Morse established his own business in Warrnambool and Robinson’s business continued at Fairy Street and converted to motor car building in the early 1900s. Alexander Robinson was Mayor of Warrnambool from 1907 to 1909. In the early 1930s Robinson’s Motors was replaced by Callaghan Motors. This business traded on the Fairy Street site until 2018 but now operates from Raglan Parade. The grandfather of one of the donors of this item, Tom Smith, worked at Robinsons Motor Pty Ltd in the early 20th century. This plate is of great interest as it came from the motor car business of Robinson’s Motor Pty Ltd. The Robinson businesses (coach building & motor car building) existed in Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a brass business plate with three small holes at each corner. The lettering etched on the plate is gold and black but the black may have been put on to the lettering at a later stage as only some of the gold lettering is still visible. The plate has been cut off on one side and part of the lettering is missing.‘Reg. This top hat, with the initials J.H.H., belonged to John Hunter Henderson, a doctor who practised in Warrnambool from 1904 to 1939. For many years he was a member of the Warrnambool Hospital Board of Management. On his retirement in 1939 he went to live in Melbourne where he died aged 81. The John Hunter Henderson fund was established at the Warrnambool Hospital to develop the training facilities for medical and nursing staff. The bowler hat belonged to his driver (name unknown) and it is presumed that he drove a horse and buggy in the early years of the 20th century. These items are of considerable significance as they are associated with Dr Henderson, a long-serving doctor in Warrnambool and they show the status and comparative affluence of doctors in the first half of the 20th century. .1 This is a black top hat with the crown covered in beaver fur or felt of some kind. The upturned brim is slightly worn on one edge. The crown has a black corded band with a bow on one side. There is a stud with an air hole on the crown. Inside there is a brown leather lining with information on the maker on the inside base and a crown image. .2 This is a bowler hat made of black felt with lining on the edges of black cotton material. The brim is slightly turned up on the sides. The crown has a black corded band with a bow at one side. There is a circle of air holes on the side of the hat. Inside there is leather lining with some information on the maker on the inside base. .3 This is a hat box lid with a leather covering over cardboard. It is a spherical shape with some side damage where the leather is peeling. There is a leather strap handle with a metal buckle. There are remnants of travel labels pasted on to the lid. .4 This is a hat box made of leather with a metal lock on one side. It has remnants of paper travel labels on the sides. Inside the box is an insert made of maroon-coloured cardboard for storing the top hat. This insert has a leather strap to stabilize the hat. There is a name on the base of the box written on a piece of adhesive plaster. .1 J.H.H.
