The Sphinx was a magazine of Durham University students published between 1905-1922, except for the period between July 1914 and the end of 1918. This volume appears to be a collection of the cartoons originally published in that magazine. While it contains no publishing details or date, we surmise it may have been published in about 1908.Thin grey covered book with grey a drawing of a Sphinx on cover. Miss Jessie McCleverty operated a girls' high school at 12 Durham Road from 1903-1905/6. After this time she moved the school to 44 Windsor Crescent where it operated until 1933. Oral testimony from Mrs R McCoy: (NB/ It is unclear whether this refers to 12 Durham Road or 44 Windsor Crescent, but it is more likely to be the later as Mrs McCoy donated a photo taken in 1982 of 44 Windsor Crescent.) "She added school rooms and a veranda to the back. She was keen on Esperanto, the international language and wanted her pupils to know it. There was an archway over the gate, part of the design being a star, part of the Esperanto sign - and some suitable wording. Each morning the pupils greeting had to be "Good Morning Fraternity", in Esperanto."Colour Polaroid photo taken from across the street of an Edwardian-style house, painted white with simple fretwork along the veranda and a picket fence with a simple profile. The roof is grey in colour. It is not possible to tell if it is slate or corrugated iron. The chimney is red brick and the garden has a variety of mature trees.miss mccleverty's girls' school, edwardian style, schools, independent schools, miss jessie mccleverty, windsor crescent, esperanto -

Found on shipwreck of 'Nene Valley' by an abalone diver some 10 years ago. Nene Valley was built in Durham, Sunderland, in 1852 – a typical merchant vessel of the era built for the colonial trade. In June 1854 Nene Valley left Gravesend, England, on its final voyage carrying nine passengers and cargo. On 19 October, the vessel grounded 15km northwest of Cape Northumberland after the crew mistook the land ahead for a cloud on the horizon. When they realised their mistake it was too late for evasive action. All passengers and crew evacuated safely, but the following morning four crew drowned after they returned to the vessel to cut away the masts.Ceramic jar, hand made, cream base with straight sides, tan stain colour to neck, flat bottom. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could be active in civic life. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and at times, national level. Mayoresses were also required to undertake Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Mayoress Snell was born in Durham UK. Mayoress Snell was the first Mayoress to wear the gold medallion which came with the office. It was presented on April 11th 1956 at the municipal centenary dinner at the Shamrock and was a gift from Sir George Lansell who followed in the tradition of his late father George Lansell in making a mayoral presentation in gold. Born in 1817 to Murdo Macdonald and Flora Morrision at Bracadale near Sleat on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, Alexander Macdonald sailed on the Earl Durham to Sydney where he arrived on 2 January 1839. He was 21 years of age. After only a few months in the new country he set out overland for Melbourne where he joined his brother on a sheep run. He also became involved with his brother in conducting the Travellers’ Rest a stopping place for travellers at the Mordialloc Creek. Alexander married Isabella Munroe at Scots Church, Melbourne on 17 February 1841. After their marriage they started the sheep run named Stringy Bark, on the Yarra, near where Kew is today. Together, they had ten children. On the morning of 20 December 1881, Alexander’s hat was found floating in Mordialloc Creek. He had last been seen crossing the bridge the previous evening at ten o’clock. A few days later the body was later found only yards from the Bridge Hotel. A magisterial enquiry conducted by Thomas Attenborough concluded Alexander Macdonald’s death was an accidental drowning.Sepia toned image of Alexander Vause Macdonald (1817-1881). -

Medal, Stokes and Martin, Portland Golden Jubilee Medal, 1884
Medal issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Edward Henty's arrival in Portland, Victoria. Edward Henty was born in England in 1809 and migrated to Australia, as did his parents and brothers, in 1829. On 19 November 1834 he sailed from Launceston in the Hentys' own schooner, the Thistle, with stock and a small party. His brother Francis followed the next month with a small flock of merino sheep, the first in Victoria. The Henty brothers began whaling at Portland Bay and took their flocks and herds inland to the rich area on the Wannon River. In the 1840s they were eventually granted pre-emptive rights over most of their lands. Henty was known as a capable and energetic man and regarded as the chief actor in the early history of Portland Bay. He and his wife Anne Marie Gallie moved to Muntham, a 60,000-acre property that became widely known for its merino sheep and Durham cattle. It was also known for its extravagant hospitality - to which Henty's social ambition and vanity contributed considerably. This extravagance and Henty's obstinacy eventually led to the degradation of the flocks. Henty lived in Portland and in his Melbourne mansion, Offington, while he served as a member of the Victoria Legislative Assembly. He died on 14 August 1878Portland Jubilee Medal, 1884. White metal, circular, holed at top as issued. One side features portrait of Edward Henty and text 'HENTY JUBILEE / PORTLAND / 19 NOV 1884' on the other side. -
