Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Photograph - Framed montage, Arthouse - Picture Framing & Gallery, Baptism and Holy Spirit, 2013
MIGRATION Travel is a luxury for most people, and although seafarers undoubtedly face hardships as part of their profession, they are also able to experience parts of the broader world than that of friends and family at home. The stories and experiences of seafarers - together with the work of the Mission to Seafarers ministry - contribute to the archive of ongoing global links and narratives of world trade and migration. As an example of this, in 1917 alone the Mission directed almost 6,000 letters written by visiting seafarers home to their families abroad, and received almost 3,000 letters in return. After experiencing Melbourne through the Mission, many seafarers later chose to make the city and Australia their home, and some chose to marry their partners at the Mission’s chapel. This pair of windows, titled ‘Baptism’ and ‘Holy Spirit’, was installed during 1933 and represents the integral links between seafaring and the world.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. This exhibition curated by Georgia Melville and Catherine McLay, and funded by PROV and Creative Victoria, was displayed in the World Trade Centre Wharf Gallery in June July 2013 and toured to Queenscliff Maritime Museum. The photographs of the windows were taken by scientific photographer Justine M. Philip. Document (item) - Allansford land purchase document, Land purchase document, 1864
This paper contains details of the purchase of Lot 11 in the Township of Allansford in 1864. The purchaser, Isabella McQueen, was born in Scotland in 1814, married Alexander McQueen in 1850 and with her family migrated to Australia in 1854. After her husband's death in 1860 Isabella purchased the land in Frank Street, Allansford in 1864 and lived in a house there with family members until her death in 1895. She had purchased the land, via an agent, from John Allan who with his brothers were the pioneer European settlers in the Allansford area. John Allan had created the township of Allansford in the mid 1850s by sub-dividing the land he owned there. John Allan moved to the Gippsland area late in 1864. This piece of paper is most significant as it is an original record of an early transaction in the history of Allansford, a town now part of Warrnambool City.Mrs isabella McQueen Bot. of Robert Gregory As agent for J M Allan Esq. piano roll, Anglo-American Player Roll Co, 1930's
To make a piano roll, when the recording artist depresses a key on a specially wired-up piano, a signal is sent to a recording machine, which punches holes in a moving roll of paper. Originally, editing was done by punching extra holes by hand or patching unwanted holes with sticky tape but eventually the process was done by computer.• The music is A Lone Girl Flyer with the words and music by Jack O'Hagan. It was published in Melbourne by Allan's, c1930 and was dedicated to Miss Amy Johnson, a pioneering English aviator, the first female pilot to fly alone from Britain to Australia. It is an example of musical recreation of the 1930's. Brown paper roll of pianola paper (.1) in black box (.2) with lid. Broadway hard roll 1694 - A lone Girl Flyer ( march song O'Hagan). Photograph, Somers Camp, c1930
A black and white photo three men wearing aprons at a beach camp kitchen. The names on the back say it is Norm Smith, Max Allan and Ewan Graham. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930, and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. This photo was with a group of photos from around the 1930s from the early days of Legacy, including cricket team, football team, and camps at Balnarring/Somers (saved as 01915 to 01934).Legatee Savige's property at Balnarring became very important for Legacy providing outings and camps for junior legatees.Black and white photo of three legatees at a camp kitchen.Handwritten 'L R Norm Smith, Max Allan, Ewan Graham' in blue pen.
