Parks Victoria - Gabo Island Lightstation
Jar
The glazed stoneware pot is an oyster jar made by Powell potteries, Bristol, probably between 1860 and 1880. Pickled oysters were a regular food of the poor in England in the 19thc. Sam Weller, Charles Dickens’ character in Pickwick Papers (1836-37) commented that ‘Poverty and oysters always seen to go together’. In England, pickling oysters for transport to inland towns and long voyages became an industry. The jar was found in sand near the jetty in 1999.Whatever their provenance, they have an association with an event or activity on Gabo Island and for this reason have second level contributory significance for their potential to yield information relating to the cultural history of the lightstation.Ceramic jar. Squat shape, body of jar is cream coloured. Spots of mildew on side. The jar has a pronounced lip, short neck, sloping shoulders and rounded body. Just below the shoulder, the glaze colour changes from brown to stone."POWEL &DB Stol" -

Mrs Sairey Gamp - English Monasteries declined in 1405 the Chruch was said to have one third of English's wealth. Henry VIII dissolved the Monasteries despite their record of charitable and medical work and took over most of their property. This left large numbers of helpless sick and poor to die. For the next 300 years there was no nursing class "hospitals" were overcrowded (sometimes 6 people to a bed) and were dirty. Nursing was carried out by women of low character and morals. Charles Dickens satirized nursing conditions with the character of Sairey Gamp. Nursing had sunk to the lowest level.30cm Miniature Doll -Checked Apron over stripped skirt. The Adoptions . . . The Desk . . . The Nature of the Performance. During the fifties of the last century, Charles Dickens, at the Height of his fame as a novelist, ventured on something quite new; he gave, in Birmingham, a public 'reading' of one of his stories. This turned out to be an historic occasion, opening up an extraordinary career for the great writer. Each 'Reading' was more sensationally successful than the last. The word was put into inverted commas because nothing could have been less like reading than Dickens's dramatic performance. Something like a hundred years later at the Criterion Theatre, EMILYN WILLIAMS appeared before the London public 'as Charles Dicken's, giving a solo performance of scenes from the novels.' Born in Flintshire, North Wales, in 1905, the son of a village inn-keeper, he spoke only Welsh as a child and learned English at school - a boyhood freely depicted in his comedy, 'The Druid's Rest.' At the age of ten he won a scholarship to the local Holywell County School, and at the age of seventeen another scholarship (in French) to Christ Church, Oxford. Image from CD (Compact Diskette for use in computers) - see Reg Item 135. Image titled "Kew Burke Rd' on CD, of looking at the East Kew Tram terminus with the city skyline in the background, c1925. Photo published in the Bellcord No. 16, Oct. 2012. From the article with the photograph; The terminus was located at the intersection of High St, Burke, Kilby and Doncaster Roads. We are at the outer edges of Melbourne’s suburbia at the time, unlike the current tram terminus of today. Burke Road, north of Doncaster Road is clearly under construction in preparation for the new river crossing. The vacant block of land in the foreground will remain so for another ten years or so. In 1960 the new Dickens Supermarket was built on this site and the intersection became known locally as Dickens Corner. The narrow track on the left hand side of the photo is Doncaster Road. The tram at the terminus is a straight-sill single trucker of one of the G, K, Q or R classes. It is finished in the late MMTB chocolate and cream livery. A cable grip car body has been placed as a tram shelter at the terminus. The church was subsequently relocated to Francis Street Yarraville where it still stands today as a private residence. Ephemera - Weekly Tickets - rail and bus St Kilda Bus lines - set of 7, Victorian Railways (VR), 1960s
Following the complete closure of the St Kilda - Brighton Electric street railway (tramway) in 1959, the Brighton St Kilda Bus lines operated a service under a contract with the Victorian Railways with a joint ticketting arrangement. These tickets are weekly tickets for various locations along the former tramway. Those tickets available for Melbourne have the conditions of travel on the rear. The two vertical stripes indicated that the ticket was available to pass through the gates at Flinders St or Spencer St, while the large cross indicated to a ticket checker that the ticket was not available beyond St Kilda station or to pass through a set of gates. Clothing - Dress, Fancy dress, circa 1911
This dress is a 'Dolly Varden' or 'shepherdess" style costume worn by Ida Annie Wallace (1890-1976) on a sea voyage to China accompanying her parents in 1911. The BHS has a photo of Ida wearing this dress when she was a guest at a dance for young people given by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne (possibly T. J. Davey). This party may have been held on the ship or it may have been a seperate event. This style dress was a popular choice for fancy dress in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The style is named after the character Dolly Varden in Charles Dickens, 'Barnaby Rudge' 1841. Around 1872, Dolly Varden-inspired costumes and paraphernalia were very a popular craze. Family information states that the silk for this dress was purchased by Ida and Marjorie's grandfather's sister (great aunt) in England circa 1840. The dress was donated by Marjorie Wallace (1901-1999), Ida's sister. Marjorie did not accompany the family to China, but stayed home with a governess. Marjorie lived in Brighton between 1923 and circa 1950 and attended Firbank Church of England Girls Grammar School.A dress consisting of bodice (.1) and skirt (.2). The bodice is made from beige silk with sprays of red and blue flowers and originally laced down the centre front with pink ribbon. The lower part of the bodice is modelled on a late 18th century polonaise design. The bodice is boned and features waist tapes. The elbow length sleeves are finished with beige hand made Maltese lace featuring Maltese crosses. The mid calf length skirt is made from pale pink silk which has been quilted and lined to create a stiffened form. Also with the dress is a piece of scrap floral fabric (.3) that is the same as the bodice fabric.dolly varden, marjorie wallace, barnaby rudge, charles dickens, fancy dress, ida annie wallace
