Derwent Jacks became Springdallah and the church was closed in 2019 after over a century. The church had not been in regular use for 40 years. This chalice is inscribed in the old district name of Derwent Jacks and is therefore a rare survivor of the gold rush era in what is today a rural area. It carries the retailers mark of Pelligrini a Melbourne firm of jewellers and silversmiths who supplied much church plate to the Catholic church in Victoria.This chalice is significant in its inscription denoting its use for the church community at Derwent Jacks which became know later as Springdallah, the original name no longer in use.St Patrick's Derwent Jacks inscribed to foot. The photographs are from his personal album, and are mainly official photographs widely available among the services. The photographs are from Australian , British and American sources. This set coincides with the Hobart's service around the time of the loss of Singapore. The Norah Moller was a British merchantman bombed in Singapore harbor while trying to escape. The Hobart rescued the bulk of crew and passengers. Items from a photo album (Cat.No. 01588), with the printed funeral service for Lt Colonel Donovan Joynt held on 12 May 1986 (Cat.No. 01596). The newspaper clipping was written by John Lahey as part of the 'Lahey at Large' column he wrote for The Age between 1982-1996. He noted that Joynt 'was the last survivor of the 66 Australians who won Victoria Crosses in World War 1.' and mentions Joynt's work for Legacy, and the Shrine of Remembrance. The Victorian Branch of the Rats of Tobruk Association was formed on 2nd October 1945. Other branches and sub-branches were established across Australia and a Federal Council was established in 1946. With the passing of the survivors of Tobruk, most branches have been wound up with the exception of the Victorian branch. Since 2012 the Rats of Tobruk Association Inc. has opened up affiliate membership to descendants and relatives of the original "Rats" in order to preserve their legacy. This booklet comes from the collection of Arthur Lock who was a Rat of Tobruk and President of the Association in Albury. The Maxwell & Williams Designer Homewares brand first entered the marker in 1996. The company was founded by Max Grundmann whose parents Harry and Anna Grundmann were Holocaust survivors who migrated to Australia in 1961. Harry Grundmann started his own homewares business H.A.G. from a Brighton garage. In 1978, Max took over the business and was later joined by Bill Ryan, a retailer. The name "Maxwell and Williams" did not evolve until 1996. Their collections are now sold in more than 500 retail outlets across Australia and some 50 markets around the world. Three press clippings about guest speakers at Legacy luncheons in 1977. Bill Fordyce was the only Australian survivor of the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III, a POW camp in Poland in World War 2. Also Professor Lance Townsend speaking on the salaries of doctors, and Mr Johnson, secretary of the Melbourne Cricket Club speaking about cricket. The items were cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity. The Loch Ard had left England in March 1878 and 90 days later on June 1st it was approaching the coast of Victoria when it wrecked off the coast near Port Campbell at what was to become known as Loch Ard Gorge. Two people survived, Eva Carmichael and Tom Pearce. While much has been recorded about the survivors, this is the first publication which looks at the other 51 people on board. This book lists where they came from, family histories and lists internet references for further information. This watch belonged to Norman Borthwick of Ecklin, who, with his wife and two children, Janet, aged 7 and Jack, aged 6, were survivors of the sinking of the cruise boat, Nestor, on the Hopkins River in January 1921. The boat was on its regular trip from the Hopkins River boatsheds to Jubilee Park with 80 passengers. Ten people were drowned when the boat began to take water and sank about a kilometre upstream. Norman Borthwick was wearing the watch at the time and the hands have stopped at 5.20 p.m. on the day of the tragedy. A hero of the day was Constable Sharrock who drowned after saving the lives of several of those on boardThis watch is of great significance as it is an item that belonged to Norman Borthwick who was wearing the watch when he survived the sinking of the Nestor in the Hopkins River in 1921. This was one of the great tragic incidents in Warrnambool in the early 20th centuryThis is a Swiss-made watch made of gunmetal with a glass face and a metal winder at the top and a ring to attach the watch to a chain. The figures are Roman numerals and there is a separate minute hand dial. The watch is much rusted and is not able to be easily opened to see the mechanism. MV ETTRICK was a British Passenger Motor Vessel of 11,279 tons built in 1938 by Barclay Curle & Company, Glasgow, for the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company. The Vessel was on charter to the Admiralty as a Troopship. On the 15th November 1942 she was torpedoed by German submarine U-155 at 0315, 150 miles W of Gibraltar. She sank at 0836. She was on a voyage from Gibraltar to the Clyde in ballast, with a crew of 204, 66 naval ratings, and 41 gunners. 18 naval ratings and 5 Asian crew were lost; another Asian seaman died of his injuries. The maker of the game, John Sands Pty Ltd produced board games between 1929 and 1978. During the North-East Victorian bushfires of 1952, Helen Felton, Postmistress of Tintaldra post office, worked continuously for five days and nights to ensure the flow of communication through the disaster. Helen Felton conceded to leave her post for only 45 minutes while “the fire passed within fifteen feet of the spot where she was working,” burning down the garage and neighbouring store, before returning to work. Today, technologies such as cells on wheels, mobile exchanges on wheels, and NBN Sky Muster trucks are deployed in the wake of a disaster to ensure survivors have access to communications services. This packaging formed part of a container holding Sungold Milk in 1978. Sungold Dairies were based in Kepler Street Warrnambool before moving to Verdon Street. In 1988 the site in Verdon Street was sold to Macdonalds fast food business and later to Guyetts funeral business. Sungold milk is now produced at the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford and today is the chief local supplier of fresh milk. This packaging, produced when the business was located in Verdon Street, was made to mark the centenary of the wreck of the Loch Ard. This ship, wrecked in 1878 near Port Campbell, attracted much attention, not only because of the loss of over 50 lives, but also because the story of the two survivors has become part of local folklore. This packaging is of minor interest as a reminder of the promotional material produced at the time of the centenary of the wreck of the Loch Ard in 1978.This is the cut-down piece of packaging that contained fresh milk. It is one piece of light card folded to make a rectangular-shaped container. The handmade model in a bottle is the work of a hobbyist, in about the mid-20th century. The word 'Cork" may indicate the location of the maker. The Pamir was a four-masted barque built for the German shipping company F. Laeisz. One of their famous Flying P-Liners, she was the last commercial sailing ship to round Cape Horn, in 1949. By 1957, she had been outmoded by modern bulk carriers and could not operate at a profit. Her shipping consortium's inability to finance much-needed repairs or to recruit sufficient sail-trained officers caused severe technical difficulties. On 21 September 1957, she was caught in Hurricane Carrie and sank off the Azores, with only six survivors rescued after an extensive search.The model represents the work of an individual as a hobby project in the early to mid-20th century.Ship in bottle.
