DOUGLAS GEORGE PHILLIPS enlisted No 3449 in the 11th reinforcements 7th Batt AIF on 14.7.1915 aged 18 years 2 months in Bendigo. He embarked for Eygpt on 18.12.1915. Promoted to Corporal 1.3.1916. Embarked for France 26.3.1916. Promoted to Sergeant 10.8.1916. Hospitalised with trench feet on 6.11.1916. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant 3.3.1917. Hospitalised with haemoptysis 20.7.1917. Promoted to Lieutenant 30.9.1917. WIA 4.10.1917 and remained on duty. Awarded the Military Cross for the same days actions. Discharged from the AIF 15.8.1919. He enlisted again on 28.9.1939 as V80050. At discharge on 12.3.1945 he was a Captain serving in No 12 Australian Garrison Coy. Ornate wood frame with glass over a brownish background. Transferred to 60th Batt 24.2.16 then 25th Howitzer Bde 27.3.16 and finally 45th Batt on 2.6.16 as No 1410. Awarded Military Medal on 22.2.17. WIA 3.6.17 GSW to face and chest. WIA 2nd occasion 5.5.18 Gassed and then shortly after he got Pnuemonia. Discharged from the AIF 30.3.19. He enlisted again in WW11 on 12.8.41 No V18372. An analog sound medium. Played on a phonograph / gramaphone / turntable / record player. They play for 10 to 30 minutes per side. Made from shellac in the 1940s until 1948, then made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Single is 45 rpm, 12 inch is 33 and a third rev per minute, (LP) is long playing = 'album'. Late 1950s introduction of stereo phonic sound on commercial discs. His Masters Voice (HMV) is a British Record Compamny created in 1901. In 1961 EMI converted the HMV label into an exclusive classical music label. HMV has a logo of a dog listening to music.The record collection is understood to have been held by a local school in the Kiewa Valley possibly Mt Beauty or Bogong primary schools.Flat black disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove starting at the outside edge. Made from shellac - rotational speed of 78 revs per minute, 33 and a third rpm (largest) or 45 rpm (smallest). The collection consists of about 50 records including children's and adult's some with cardboard covers. Many of the adult records have the HMV label. Record stand has a rectangular base with padded wire stretching from one side to the other and placed a short distance away enabling the records to be stored vertically and safely so as not to be scratched or bent.vinyl records, children's music, classical music, his masters voice -

Annie Cameron was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Cameron. Her father was a keen geologist and botanist. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex. He was listed as a significant plant collector at Orbost, Victoria who collected on the Bemm, Cann and Snowy Rivers. (Based on the list published by J.H. Willis, D. Pearson, M.T. Davis, and J.W. Green, Western Australian Herbarium Research Notes Number 12, August 1986. Enhanced with information from George, A.S. (2009) Australian Botanist's Companion, Four Gables Press, WA.)These items are significant as a record of the occurrence of a plant species at a particular place and time and are a useful research resource. They are associated with the Cameron family, early Orbost settlers. Harriett Holmes is associated with the Coghill - Holmes - Chatham family of Ascot, Victoria. Harriet was born in Leicestershire, England in 1799. She was the daughter of Henry Carter and Dorothea Madge. Harriett Holmes married Henry Holmes. They had 12 children, 4 died in infancy. The abacus has been used by many civilisations, and is still in use today. Its origin is masked in the depths of time, but it is believed to have originated in crude form around the years c.2500 BCE. It is interesting to note that this abacus, although in use in Australian schools, contains ten rows, each containing ten beads, suggesting that it was heavily influenced by the decimal system. The number 12 was quite prominent in Australia, no doubt introduced by the British during the first settlements. It's use, as in dozens, twelve shillings in the pound and twelve inches in a foot, was widespread until decimalisation in 1966. Ferdinand Krause was a Professor at the Ballarat School of Mines. The Linnean Society of London is the world’s oldest active biological society. Founded in 1788 by Sir James Edward Smith (1759–1828), who was its first President. This photograph was taken by Charles NETTLETON (1826-1902), a prominent Melbourne photographer who recorded the city’s rapid growth from a small town into a metropolis. He was the special photographer for the government and the Melbourne Corporation, and documented of the built environment and major public works throughout Melbourne from when he arrived to Victoria in 1854. Stoddart arranged for them to be shipped to Victoria and placed on pedestals of Sicilian marble and on bases of Victorian granite. These statues were unveiled in the gardens on Queen Victoria's birthday, 24th May, 1884. His intention was for the statues to adorn and add interest to the gardens. Spring is represented by the image of a young woman who is crowned with a floral wreath and carrying a posy. Her dress is a one-shoulder toga dress in the Greco-Roman style. Private Donald Hector Murray greeting Private Edward Raymond Hargreaves in London during WW1. Donald enlisted 17/04/1916 in the 37th Infantry Battalion and embarked for Europe 03/06/1916. He died of Tubercular Pleurisy on 21/12/1916 at the Military Hospital, Fargo England, whilst on active service. He is buried in the Durrington Cemetery there. Edward enlisted in the 5th Infantry Battalion on 08/07/1915 and embarked for France 11/10/1915. Upon his return he was granted a Soldier Settler's block west of Lake Bolac in 1921. Aerial view of Lake Bolac after the drought had broken in late 2010. The fresh-water lake is now full, as are the wetlands. Note the edge of the salt-lake in the bottom right, the Industrial Estate bottom left and centre, the golf course, the current footy oval, Bowling Club, tennis courts and swimming pool with the P-12 College through the trees on the bank of the lake. An Archaeologist might be able to discern the original footy oval bottom centre, built on what was once the town Common (below the industrial buildings),and the second oval (above the salt lake.) W. Membrey Blacksmith Shop in Patrick Street beside the sale yards which later became the Technical School Gold Reef Campus. W. Membrey died when young leaving a large family. The business was then rented to Mr. G. Brehaut for 12/6 (twelve shillings six pence) per week. The Membrey family lived in Skene St. Stawell for many years. Notes record that a copy was make by Mark Dadswell, Stawell. Also the notes record in 1996 a copy was made and donated to the Society by Melbourne Museum. 76.1 - V.W. Membrey blacksmith at Marnoo. "Cherry and Sons Pty Ltd", dates this churn to post 1904. In 1858, Edward Cherry began making butter churns in his spare time. Thisi became a full time business with the first factory opening in Gisborne in 1875, using imported NZ kauri pine. Steam was used to bend the base and then it was 12 months drying time before the churn was available for sale. Edward died in 1909 and the business was taken over by his son George until his death in 1917. During the polio epidemic in the 1930's, the company also made respirators. The company closed iin the 1970's.A wooden butter churn with handle and lid. the handle turns a spoked wooden paddle inside to make butter. It is a light brown colour, 30 centimetres high, 32 centimetres long and 21 centimetres wide. The wooden handle on the outside of the box is nine centimetres long three and a half centimetres wide tapering to one and a half centimetres wide, it's attached to a piece of metal that's 13 centimetres long, one and a half centimetres wide and half a centimetre thick. This is attached to a metal rod one centimetre in diameter that goes through the box and is attached to the other side of the box. Sali HERMAN (12 February 1898-03 April 1993) Born Switzerland Arrived Australia 1937 After studying at the Zurich Technical School Sali Herman migrated to Australia where he continued his studies with the George Bell School, Melbourne. He moved to Sydney in 1938. Sali Herman enlisted in the Australian Army in 1941 and was assigned to the First Camouflage Section. He later became a sergeant with the 3rd Royal Australian Engineers Training Battalion at Kapooka. Diana Lodge was built and operated by Kevin Shoebridge as a family lodge in the 1950s and it has grown and evolved over 60 years to become Diana Alpine Lodge. After Mr. Shoebridge moved to Wodonga he leased Diana Lodge to Bob Scott and it also became the Post Office and Telephone Exchange. From early early 1967 until about 1975, Diana Lodge was owned and operated by John and Gwyn van Burck. It was then purchased by a group of 12 families operating as Swan Hill Alpine Holdings. This was later changed to a Combined Division Race on PHD handicap then again changed to IRC handicap. The trophy was won by Barton Harney three consecutive times and in accordance with the deed of gift the trophy was retained by Mr. Harney. In 1975 Mr. Harney re-donated the trophy to RBYC and a new deed was written allowing for ballasted yachts on the RBYC register to compete on a course of approximately 12-15 nautical miles. This docket from the firm of Stephen Holgate and Co. of Ballarat gives details of this firm’s sale in 1916 of nine bullocks on behalf of Joseph Tilley of ‘Aringa’ of Port Fairy. The sale yielded £215-15-0 and, with costs of £14-12-2, the profit for Joseph Tilley was £201-2-10. Stephen Holgate established his auctioneering firm in Ballarat in the late 19th century and was an authority on sheep and cattle breeding. Joseph Tilley was farming at ‘Aringa’ in the early 20th century and also owned the Penshurst Hotel. ‘Aringa’, five miles west of Port Fairy on the Portland Road, was established by John Ritchie in 1839.This docket is of some importance as it is an original one and gives details of a 1916 sale of cattle with the names Joseph Tilley and Stephen Holgate of interest. It gives us the prices for bullocks in 1916 and the type of receipt forms used at that time.This is an original receipt for an account sale of 1916. The docket is a printed one from the firm of Stephen Holgate and Co. of Ballarat with printed blue and red lines for entering the details of the sale.
